I have used everyhit.com's Retro chart feature here to created a Top 40 of the most popular UK singles from June until August 1967. Which brings a list of 40 songs, several of them very strong and very classic. But what was the greatest song (single) of the Summer of Love?

Several great candidates. Voted "Waterloo Sunset" although it pains me not to be able to vote for "See Emily Play" nor "All You Need Is Love".

"Respect" will probably get all the votes from ILM's many R&B fans and win.

Voted "Waterloo Sunset"

indeed

I've never understood the Death of A Clown = Dave Davies solo single idea. It was on a Kinks album, wasn't it?

Waterloo Sunset seems like an obvious choice, but I might give my vote to Creeque Alley since no one else will.

Although I stand by "Waterloo Sunset", there are lots of gems here. I mean, "Itchycoo Park", "A Whiter Shade Of Pale", "Paper Sun", "I Was Made To Love Her". Surely that summer has become legendary for a reason.

Aretha, duh! "Groovin'" for second place, cause it's, like, a perfect summer hit and all. "Waterloo Sunset" would probably come in third for me.

They tended to release the Dave Davies tracks as Dave Davies solo singles though. In the same way, "Caroline No" was released from "Pet Sounds" as a Brian Wilson solo single.

Yes, Waterloo Sunset it is.

Ray Davies is once reputed to have said "'Waterloo Sunset' is better than I am."

To which he should have added ".....and I'm pretty great to start with."

I'm not that keen on Waterloo Sunset and have no idea why it is so rated.

Lee and Nancy's 'Jackson' is on there as a half od the 'only live twice' so its already better then everything on the list times two.

No love for Scott McKenzie? Every time San Francisco comes on the radio in the morning I know it will be a good day. There is something very touching about it. For me it is by far the song which connects best with the summer of love. It captures the atmosphere of the times with Scott's gentle voice, the sluggish tune and the spot-on lyrics.

would that "Itchycoo Park" were on this list...I'll go with "Here Come The Nice", for the funny drug reference...

I think I must not have looked closely enough. Surely, it's "Here Come The Nice" and not "Itchycoo Park" on this list. The latter was later in the autumn.

Voted for Stevie, tho my runners-up ("See Emily Play", "Wind Cries Mary" are surely more representative of The Summer, at least as I like to imagine it. (I myself was a mere foetus at the time.)

not a lot there I rate. I went with "The Wind Cries Mary."
