Explain to me the lyrics to Black Sabbath's 'Hole in the Sky'

Im looking through a hole in the sky
Im seeing nowhere through the eyes of a lie
Im getting closer to the end of the line
Im living easy where the sun doesnt shine

Im living in a room without any view
Im living free because the rents never due
The synonyms of all the things that Ive said
Are just the riddles that are built in my head

Hole in the sky, take me to heaven
Window in time, through it I fly

Ive seen the stars disappear in the sun
The shootings easy if youve got the right gun
And even though Im sitting waiting for mars
I dont believe theres any future in cause

Hole in the sky, take me to heaven
Window in time, through it I fly
Yeah

Ive watched the dogs of war enjoying their feast
Ive seen the western world go down in the east
The food of love became the greed of our time
But now Im living on the profits of pride

i always thought the final couplet was a kinda self-indictment for being complicit in the rapaciousness of the music biz. "food of love" = music, right?

it's deep

I always thought it might have something to do with a ozone layer hole prescience - not only the title, but also the line 'I dont believe there's any future in cars'. I now know I misheard that lyric, so there goes the environmentalist interpretation.

I always thought it was "I dont believe there's any future in cars" too!

I say it's about being gay in the modern sense, particularly being a kept guy. "Holes," "stars," and "where the sun doesnt shine" are all slang for the anus. (And Kiss can teach us the implication of "shooting" and "gun.") He's living free and easy through selling his ass. He digs the sex; it takes him to heaven. But he's compelled to talk in synonyms and think in riddles because he's ashamed of his rough trade status, living off the profits of (gay) pride. If this latter bit seems far-fetched, check out this remarkable footage of a 1970 Folsom Street Parade which may feature Ozzy & Co.

Ok, I'm joking. Well....83.6% joking.

It's probably about the evils of the music biz or a typically 1970s head in the sand reaction to the evils of govt. warmongers.
