WORST big hit single by Journey?

We all love Journey. Some ironically, other genuinely, but it's a fact. You love Journey, or you pretend that you dislike Journey.

But that doesn't mean we unconditionally love them. And that's where I'm curious. If you could destroy any Journey song, which would it be?

"Faithfully" is pretty obvious and uninspired, proto-Creed or something. "Lights" is also kind of lame for a song that's so heavily played.

Sundar, Monday, 29 October 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

I'd have to re-listen to the less familiar titles to say for sure, but "Wheel In The Sky" has always been pretty boring to me. Even that one has a pretty big hook that I can't totally hate on, though.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 29 October 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

Really? I really like the minor-key windiness of that one. It reminds me of 70s Heart and Rush.

Sundar, Monday, 29 October 2007 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, maybe it's just that it feels more like it could've been done by any number of other 70's bands where most of their hits, for better or worse, are uniquely Journey, or at least uniquely Steve Perry.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 29 October 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

"Any Way You Want It". Can't stand that one.

Joe, Monday, 29 October 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

Don't Stop, BELIEVINNNNNN!

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 29 October 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

I voted Faithfully, but there's a probably a lot of Journey big hit singles I haven't heard and would also hate

Dominique, Monday, 29 October 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

This is a tough call between "Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin" and "Wheel in the Sky."

nabisco, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

"Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" unquestionably. I've despised that "na na-na na na-na" coda for nearly 30 years now.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

Also it is a Journey song that has the word "squeezin'" in it.

nabisco, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

Like, in earnest, and romantically: squeezin'.

nabisco, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

"I'll Be Alright.." is their most underrated, maybe.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

On the other hand, let's not forget that "Wheel in the Sky" is about a wheel, in the sky, that keeps on turning

nabisco, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

I think I like all of these songs except for "Faithfully".

HI DERE, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think "Wheel in the Sky" ever actually mentions the Cherokee people and/or Cherokee tribe, but I'm not sure it'd make much difference if it did.

nabisco, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

"Lights" is how dark that night in the soul really feels like when you're in the city, and how utility companies want to crush the little guy.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

It would be so much better if it actually were.

(You wound me, nabisco, as much as I enjoy your writing about hard rock music.)

Sundar, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

Sundar if your personal pride is seriously linked to the goodness of "Wheel in the Sky," you are going to have salt rubbed in that wound REALLY often!

nabisco, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

missing "all of the above plus any other Journey hits" option.

Oilyrags, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

Oh damn I voted for 'Faithfully' - but I'd most definitely change it for "I'll Be Alright Without You" - that makes my Members Only jacket burn.

BlackIronPrison, Monday, 29 October 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

SQUEEEEEEZIN

da croupier, Monday, 29 October 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

you hate on Lovin Touchin Squeezin = I stab you

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 29 October 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

a NA NA NA chorus is the sign of a great song (see also: J. Geils Band, John Cougar Mellencamp, Land of a 1,000 Dances, etc.)

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 29 October 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

Voted "Who's Crying Now". And I do not love Journey. Not in any way.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 29 October 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

On the other hand, let's not forget that "Wheel in the Sky" is about a wheel, in the sky, that keeps on turning

-- nabisco, Monday, October 29, 2007 9:21 PM

That sums it all up right there.

eeyore19, Monday, 29 October 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

It could be argued that some of these songs must be worse than "Squeezin'" seeing as how I can't remember them, but then I would never think less of a Journey song for not wedging itself in my memory bank.

da croupier, Monday, 29 October 2007 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

the afterlife will be one long Paul McCartney concert for you

da croupier, Monday, 29 October 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

All this hate for "Faithfully" is burning my soul!

Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' is a good choice, I agree, but I voted for Wheel in the Sky.

My name is Kenny, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

I done seen a bunch of ilxors rock out to "wheel in the sky" in Coney Island a few years ago. it was weird.

da croupier, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

I like "Lovin Touchin Squeezin"

Joe, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

Do any of these not include WHOA-EEE-OOH-WHOOOAAAA-OOOOH-EEE-OH? If so I'm voting for that one.

Jake Brown, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

I hate this fucking band

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 02:25 (eighteen years ago)

i used to think they sucked, now i can see the craft in it. never heard the pre-Perry fusiony/proggy lineup, was that actually "worse" than the platinum years??

gershy, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 02:32 (eighteen years ago)

I love this fucking band, but Open Arms was covered pretty straight by Mariah Carey so I'm voting for that. Faithfully's pretty terrible too, truth be told. Although the na-na-na coda to Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' is comparable to the greatest achievements of mankind, which makes up for the suck-ass ballads somewhat. Glad to see no-one hates Seperate Ways (Worlds Apart) though.

Matt #2, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)

"Any Way You Want It" is their worst song simply because of those damn car commercials from a few years back.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

"Any Way You Want It", because esp. at the end Steve Perry just starts lazily wailing, and it's a drag.

Euler, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 03:00 (eighteen years ago)

"Lovin', Touchin' Squeezin'." It's all about that title--and no ammount of "na na na's" could save that shit from the abyss.

JN$OT, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

i love faithfully and wheel in the sky, let me say in advance y'all are dumb. i don't remember "squeezin'" but nabisco's logic seems pretty unassailable for a change.

tremendoid, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Voted "Don't Stop Believin'" for the faux pas of mentioning 'south detroit' - everyone knows there is no such neighborhood.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

It's my fault that I didn't see this thread and make "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'" at least tied for #1.

Matos W.K., Wednesday, 21 November 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

i only have the greatest hits, but that's the only bad song of the bunch on there

winston, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 02:56 (eighteen years ago)

ultra surprised by the hate for "don't stop believin" but i guess it is pretty "overplayed"

winston, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 02:57 (eighteen years ago)

"anyway you want it" should have been automatically exempt because of rodney dangerfield in caddyshack

winston, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

"Faithfully"???

Oh FUCK YOU ALL. FUCK YOU ALL.

My name is Kenny, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 05:51 (eighteen years ago)

the only thing wrong with this poll is you could only vote for one song.

Matos W.K., Wednesday, 21 November 2007 05:54 (eighteen years ago)

Voted "Don't Stop Believin'" for the faux pas of mentioning 'south detroit' - everyone knows there is no such neighborhood.

Detroit - two dimensional city.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

he's right. there is no "south detroit". that would be windsor, ontario. detroit is actually north of canada. it's on a bend in the detroit river.

fritz, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

Why does everyone always say that? As DV points out, some parts of Detroit must be further south than others? (Maybe it's that there's nothing special about the more southern parts of Detroit. I wouldn't know since I've never been there.)

Sundar, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

But that would actually make even more sense since he's "just a city boy" desperate to escape from the blank anonymity of a nothing-special neighbourhood, taking the midnight train anywhere.

Sundar, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

downtown (or what's left of it) is smack dab on the river, so it feels as if detroit starts there and sprawls north... it's not like there is no southern part of detroit, just that no-one would call it "south detroit" or really think of it that way. don't know if that makes sense, but that's how it seems to me anyway.

"South Detroit, South Dakota
South Detroit is a township in Brown County, in the Aberdeen metro area.
It is in the Central Standard time zone. Elevation is 1,289 feet.
The population, at the time of the 2000 census, was 86."

That clears things up, no? (Yes, that's from ePodunk.com.)

Euler, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

it's like Toronto, sundar, the city begins at the lake and heads up. People talk about North Toronto all the time, but I can't recall anyone ever talking about "South Toronto".

fritz, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

Doesn't sound like a "city boy" to me. Glad everyone likes Be Good To Yourself anyway.

Stone in Love - Classic or Greatest 4:25 In The History Of The Bay Area?

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

Y'all clearly just don't remember "Send Her My Love" - none more insipid.

Whereas if you can't hear teh AWESOME in "Faithfully" you just hate percusssion.

rogermexico., Friday, 23 November 2007 00:16 (eighteen years ago)

proto-Creed

I'm no Journey fan or nothin', but...... ouch!

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 25 November 2007 01:27 (eighteen years ago)

faithfully was made for the slow skates at the roller rink.

keythkeyth, Sunday, 25 November 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

OH NO I MISSED THIS POLL! And I've been listening to Journey's Greatest Hits regularly for about two weeks, which is something I assure you I've never done before.

I pick "Wheel In The Sky" which I always turn off after about 10 seconds. But there's one more at the end of that Greatest Hits album that is really bad and sounded like it came from their later material, I believe it's called "Be Good To Yourself".

"Open Arms" bothers me a little now even though I thought it was okay when it came out. It's my third least favourite, but the rest of their Greatest Hits I really love. It makes me wonder if I should try to get into any of their albums proper.

Bimble, Sunday, 25 November 2007 06:54 (eighteen years ago)

Also why so much hate for Faithfully? And indeed, "Don't Stop Believin" which I could play another 50 trillion times and never get tired of? You guys are nuts.

Bimble, Sunday, 25 November 2007 06:56 (eighteen years ago)

guitar magazine would tell you that everything Greg Rolie era was crap

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 25 November 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

should have said POST-Greg Rolie
