Question regarding album mentioned in Rip it Up and Start Again

I was just remembering that Simon Reynolds mentioned briefly an album I think by Barry White's backing group that was instrumental and was influential among the post punkers or something. I just remembered because I noticed how great the music is on his album, and I lost my copy of the book. And I looked through the albums by Love Unlimited Orchestra and haven't been able to find it.

Anyone know which one it was?

I think there's an exhaustive footnote/album listing list somewhere on one of his blogs/websites. Start here: http://ripitupandstartagainbysimonreynolds.blogspot.com/
maybe.

I actually remember what you're talking about, but can't think of the name and no longer have the book myself.

I think it was 12" single rather than an album, my sister had it

It's the League Unlimited Orchestra album that remixes Dare by the Human League.

Hmmmmmmmmm, no, I think it is Love Unlimited Orchestra.

Tom D., Wednesday, 31 October 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

It was inspired by Barry White's LOVE Unlimited Orchestra, yes. But the record in question is the League's.

Anyway, it's less that Marin Rushent (League producer) was "inspired" by that record and more an homage.

And what's REALLY weird is that I just read that chapter of the book for the first time this am -- and skipped to that section!

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

what. no, i think grimey simey and thread starter are saying there was a specific love unltd orchestra 12" that influenced the post-punkers, more broadly than the name being borrowed by the league.

Yes, that's how I understood it. I think the Love Unlimited 12" was one of the earliest 12" singles released in the UK and, right before punk, a lot of the people who got involved in punk (like my older sister) were into dance music and (proto) disco. I'm sure Grimey S mentions it.

The one I was looking for WAS League Unlimited Orchestra, which was why I had such a hard time finding it. Thank you Native Teen Idol.

But yeah Im going to get the Love Unlimited 12 too

filthy dylan, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

what's it called, anyone?

League Unlimited Orchestra is one of the best records ever. I've had 3 copies so far, though one I gave to Prince Language so I could get into an Afrikaa Bambaata gig for free.

It's great, but overall I prefer the 6 song "Fascination!" 12" (more difficult to get in the UK I think).

Of course you need both.

I checked but I couldn't find any reference to a Love Unlimited Orchestra 12" in Simey's tome but maybe that's just 'cos the index is shit or maybe I imagined the whole thing

I have both! But I just bought League Unlimited Orchestra for a friend's birthday present, and it's SO good I need to get my own copy.

Speaking of Martin Rushent, what was his recent single like? Did anyone hear that?

And Phil Oakey won't let it be reissued on CD as it's not "him", so hold on to your good copies!

what's on the 6 song FASCINATION 12"?
