Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

Think I'll give Young Gods their only vote.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

Er...this list seems to leave out a few albums from the '80s. Maybe add "Terrorizer" and "loud rock" (or something like that) to the subject heading?

I love a lot of these. Went with GnR, a totally boring choice but the best album of the '80s nonetheless, though my heart wishes I could convince myself to go with Voivod or Young Gods or or Motorhead or Celtic Frost (Into the Pandemonium, I guess) instead. They could have picked way less boring '80s Butthole Surfers albums, though.

Also: To hell with Terrorizer for not including more pop-metal/hair-metal/AOR/etc. albums, several of which are as good as pretty much anything up there.
So consider GnR a protest vote about that, too.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

Cool that they included Saint Vitus, though.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

None of those.

Voted "Back In Black" since not even "Hysteria" or "1984" were included. The rest are all unlistenable.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

No Last Exit, no credibility.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 13:18 (eighteen years ago)

Geir is totally wrong of course. If a mod wants to change the title to best rock albums or add Terrorizer to the title then feel free.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

Public Enemy of course.

mark e, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 13:37 (eighteen years ago)

No Run-DMC then?

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 13:39 (eighteen years ago)

no

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

Also: To hell with Terrorizer for not including more pop-metal/hair-metal/AOR/etc. albums, several of which are as good as pretty much anything up there.

That was as likely as Kerrang picking extreme metal albums in any of their lists.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

those token alt-rock & hip hop choices make the list rather awkward looking. why not just stick to metal? other than that, too much goodness to choose from. somewhat interesting to include bathory's debut and omit 'under the sign of the black mark'.

saxomophone, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

It makes a change from the normal NME/Rolling Stone/Q/Spin lists for sure. Which all tend to be the same lists. Sadly the title change will mean most wont click on this thread anymore (the reason I didn't mention Terrorizer initially).

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

Most people are probably like Geir though and prefer those lists to Terrorizer ones.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

voted swans, children of god. but there are a lot of great albums on that list.

Mark Clemente, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

they could've varied it up a bit, though, instead of allowing 3+ releases from bands, like maybe limiting it to no more than 2 albums/band.

Mark Clemente, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

The rest are all unlistenable.

even if you'd heard the rest, which you most certainly have not, this is demonstrably untrue. please think before typing. though it is true that 1984 belongs in this list (but not hysteria).

so many great albums in here: gluey porch, louder than love, reign in blood, rock for light, locust abortion, damaged, my war, nothing's shocking, streetcleaner, south of heaven, scum, danzig...my heart wants to vote for the real thing, but in truth it's too patchy, and far from being FNM's greatest album.

fresh fruit for rotting vegetables, however, is utterly impeccable. still sounds vicious and breathtaking now.

m the g, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

There's at least 25 totally classic albums on this list.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

hysteria >>>>>

gluey porch, louder than love, reign in blood, rock for light, locust abortion, my war, nothing's shocking, streetcleaner, south of heaven, danzig

Maybe not Damaged, though.

I have never heard Scum, not wanted to.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

Def Lep > Dead Kennedy's too, easy.

(Morons left Flipper and Die Kreuzen and the Angry Samoans off the list, natch.)

xhuxk, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

suit yourself.

but my god, def leppard are and always were an awful band.

m the g, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

i assume you dint vote in Poll : Best Def Leppard Album ? ?

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

or Poll : Best Bon Jovi Album ? ?

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

no I dint.

but I have no particular objection to bon jovi, up to and including keep the faith.

I just hate def leppard with a passion. to me they're the musical equivalent of chewing polystyrene.

m the g, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

Not even the early def leppard stuff?

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

they should've put land of rape and honey as an option instead of mind is a terrible thing to taste

latebloomer, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

not to get all Alex in NYC but WHERE'S KILLING JOKE

latebloomer, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

don't steal his lines!

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

Where's Mob Rules?

I'll go South of Heaven

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

Pathetic list.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

haha

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

How many of those albums do you like, Alex?

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

I like plenty of'em, but the absence of Killing Joke renders the list moot.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

i actually agree with you!

especially for a list of this nature you'd think they'd include Killing Joke's debut.

latebloomer, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

wasn't that a 1979 release?

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

no 80 i think

latebloomer, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

fair enough then, it should be in it.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

Death - Scream Bloody Gore because im listening to it.

chaki, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

They could have picked way less boring '80s Butthole Surfers albums, though.

That's my favourite Butthole Surfers album.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 January 2008 00:52 (eighteen years ago)

Sod it
Best Album From Terrorizer's Most Important Albums Of The Nineties

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 January 2008 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

i know we have threads on these other lists. i just know it.

scott seward, Friday, 11 January 2008 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

More than likely but sod it.
You can do a poll on the gore list if you like.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 January 2008 01:43 (eighteen years ago)

Or not

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 January 2008 10:34 (eighteen years ago)

Worst album here has to be WASP - WASP . But no doubt plenty will disagree.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

Puppets.

chap, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

You think that's best or worst?

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

Best, of course.

Hmmm, Joy Division's on the list.

chap, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

'Ace of Spades' seemed like the obvious choice, but really there's a lot of stuff here I'm embarrassed to admit I don't know. There's a lot of cool-sounding proto-Blackness beyond the mighty Frosties. Can't believe I actually missed an album called "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus"

Soukesian, Friday, 11 January 2008 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

That's the album before Messiah joined Candlemass isn't it?

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 January 2008 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

WASP rule! I wanna be somebody! Fuck you, I'm voting for that one.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 11 January 2008 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

Albums that are definitely in my top 100 80's records:

Bathory - Blood Fire Death
Big Black - Songs About Fucking
Black Flag - Damaged
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales
Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion
Discharge - Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing
Iron Maiden - Killers
Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
Slayer - Reign In Blood
Swans - Children Of God
Voivod - Killing Technology

Alex in SF, Friday, 11 January 2008 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

Locust Abortion Technician is my fave Buttholes too

Soukesian, Friday, 11 January 2008 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

Still sounds great too

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 January 2008 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

WASP rule! I wanna be somebody! Fuck you, I'm voting for that one.

Good on you, that's a great album.

Lots of great stuff listed, but I'll always go with Puppets.

A. Begrand, Saturday, 12 January 2008 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

Joy Division will end up with 0 votes as anyone who would vote for it wont click on the thread now as it says Terrorizer in the title yet wasp will get votes, there's no justice!

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 January 2008 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

I get the feeling Master Of Puppets will win this.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 January 2008 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

That's the album before Messiah joined Candlemass isn't it?

Yep..it's actually more of an EP, but quite awesome (especially for 'Solitude').

Johann Lundquist was the vocalist's name I think...and he wasn't bad at all, he probably fit this material better than Messiah would have (though no doubt Messiah fit his era quite well).

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 12 January 2008 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

agreed with the W.A.S.P. love.

the s/t is classic, I really like Crimson Idol, and Headless Children is very nice.

The Final Command was kind of boring though.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 12 January 2008 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

Too many bad memories of friends playing me them.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 January 2008 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

Dio - Holy Diver

this is my ringtone!

Mighta been 'simpler' material but that golden voice carries it all!

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 12 January 2008 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

That seems to be a popular ILX ringtone.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 January 2008 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

I just heard the Killswitch Engage version of this song.....

I'm not so sure what I think of it yet

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 12 January 2008 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I want to hear that, ever.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

it wasn't very good.

they ruined the coolest part of the song

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

I would expect them to ruin anything they touch

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 11:44 (eighteen years ago)

Who's going to win?

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

don't underestimate reign in blood

Edward III, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

could get picky about some of the selections but this list is pretty eclectic for the metal world. aside from lack of nyc scumfuck, psychsludge, and industrial this is pretty representative of my 80s listening habits...

Beastie Boys - Licensed To Ill
Big Black - Songs About Fucking
Black Flag - Damaged
Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Technician
Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables
Dio - Holy Diver
Godflesh - Streetcleaner
Iron Maiden - Killers
Joy Division - Closer
Misfits - Walk Among Us
Morbid Angel - Altars Of Madness
Motörhead - Ace Of Spades
NWA - Straight Outta Compton
Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
Slayer - Reign In Blood
Suicidal Tendencies - Suicidal Tendencies
Swans - Children Of God
Swans - Cop
WASP - WASP
Young Gods - L'Eau Rouge

Edward III, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

I think jeff should do a WASP poll since clearly they are a popular ilm band

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

ILM SECRET SHAME

Edward III, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

My WASP poll would go something like this:

LOVE Machine: greatest song ever?
-yes
-FUCK YEAH

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

haha

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:08 (eighteen years ago)

I was expecting wasp to get the joke vote

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

Nope, the wasp vote was serious!

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:14 (eighteen years ago)

Wow. I actually have that Primus album. Can't remember the last time I ever gave it a spin though...

MacDara, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

Even stranger than the 90s one.

chap, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:29 (eighteen years ago)

Amusing though

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

Ick.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

Big Black's 'Songs About Fucking' is apparently a better album than Master of Puppets.

I have never heard of Big Black, by the way.

chap, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:53 (eighteen years ago)

It's a far better album.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:54 (eighteen years ago)

No way!

Why those Voivod albums and not Nothingface??

Sundar, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 06:00 (eighteen years ago)

didn't realise jane's addiction had quite so much love in these parts. they've fared particularly well on both the 80s and 90s polls.

as for the landslide primus victory, i'm pretty bemused. there really are some classics on that list

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 06:06 (eighteen years ago)

i lol'd

strgn, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 06:44 (eighteen years ago)

I think even the last janes album got some love round here, but some older fans refused to listen to it anyway

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

I played it once.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

It was a decent enough album.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

"Why those Voivod albums and not Nothingface??"

Good question.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

i wasn't a big fan of 'strays', but i saw jane's on tour just before the release of that record and they were explosive.

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 17 January 2008 06:31 (eighteen years ago)

Edward III, Friday, 18 January 2008 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

Where can I see these lists in their actual order instead of alphabetical?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 18 January 2008 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

I think the list was alphabetical in the magazine

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 18 January 2008 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

Who listens to Primus after they turn 14?

Super Subway Comedian, Friday, 18 January 2008 02:16 (eighteen years ago)

haha

Charlie Howard, Friday, 18 January 2008 03:15 (eighteen years ago)

who listens to primus after they turn 14?
