Model train sets versus zinging YBAs: the battle for ILX's soul

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 12:35 (eighteen years ago)

handful of incredible tracks vs lots of very good tracks

blueski, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 12:38 (eighteen years ago)

Hardest one yet but the art bit of me says KLF.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 12:40 (eighteen years ago)

That R2 doc on SAW yesterday was disappointing.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 12:40 (eighteen years ago)

I need to hear all of "Roadblock" to decide.

2for25, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

Pete Waterman and Bill Drummond kinda look the same. Also both funnee guys. Drummond not a Tory as far as I know. "Doctorin' the Tardis" not as good as "SS Paparazzi". Tammy Wynette considerably better than Sonia. THIS IS DEAD HARD. Today I'm'a vote for KLF specifically for Chill Out and "It's Grim Up North". And the good version of "What Time Is Love" without the rapping on it.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

What I want to hear is the original "Roadblock" mix which featured a full vocal track performed by Jimmy Ruffin but which SAW took off at the last minute because they thought it might make it sound "too authentic."

Waterman also not a Tory.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

Though I'm pretty sure Mike Stock is.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

Gotta bow to yr infallible Tory Detector. Thought Pete had been involved with some kind of Cameronite initiative.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

IIRC Waterman collects real-life old steam trains, which is kind of awesome. KLF's antics somewhat embarrasing & naff in retrospect. Also they could have given me all that money.

I'm going for quantity, though in any case SAW Ruul. "You Spin me Round (like a record)" pwnz anyuthing in KLF's back catalog, never mind this:

"You Spin Me Round" ruined forever by turgid endless sequence on aforementioned R2 doc where Steve Levine describes the workings of the Linn 900 a la that Fast Show claymation sketch.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

Never 'eard it. (thank goodness?)

All pop videos should look like Nagel prints that have been brought to life!

KLF, because they credited themselves as artists and didn't hire puppet artists with model looks that were given way too much artistic credit that they didn't deserve.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

B-b-but the rapping!

Tom D., Tuesday, 25 March 2008 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

Statler And Waldorf

blueski, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

SAW II was better.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

SAW's list of singles has some pretty fucking dire (Do They Know Its Christmas?!?!?) shit on there. That Dead or Alive song is ok but its pretty tedious beyond 30 seconds on "I Love the 80s" and inescapable in some shit clubs and high school dances.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

still want instrumental edit of 'you spin me round' - great italo rip in its own right
