Nocturnus

I love tech bands like this & these guys are so all-over-the-map - some of the passages on The Key sound like straight power-metal only with some weird buzzy keyboard sounds, sometimes it's just classic fists-up Tampa death, sometimes it's a little proggy like Sadist. Probably not worthy of a whole thread as what else is there to say beyond "they were great & kinda weird & I dig them" but there you go.

unless Siegbran says something this thread is dead in the water

Overall I listen to the second album, Thresholds, a bit more often (the cover artwork is awesome). Oddly my favorite Nocturnus song might be the bonus track on The Key, "Undead Journey". The riff coming just after the break is killer.

i have a copy of 'the key' lying around somewhere on tape. there seems to be a really ambitious concept behind it that i could never quite get my head around. i always thought of them as a thrash band with a more-evil-than-usual premise behind their lyrics and image. i haven't listened in ages, but it's original stuff.

the concept: time-travelling to kill jesus, if i recall correctly.

i never really dug these guys originally. i've been meaning to give them another shot, but i think my reaction at the time was "average florida death plus keyboards." i saw them w/napalm death and godflesh and the keyboard guy was pretty hilarious, once in a while making a spooky noise and headbanging behind his casio or whatever.

Their section of the "Hard n' Heavy SPECIAL ISSUE: GRINDCORE EDITION" (parental advisory: EXPLICIT EVERYTHING) is awesome. Where to start with their albums, though?

I have their second album Thresholds, haven't listened to it in years. I remember it was a total guitar solo freakout thing. They were friends of Morbid Angel (mike Browning being the ex-drummer).

listening to the nocturnus demos thing. pretty middle of the road. i like the review on the inside that's like "they have keyboards so it sounds like bathory." QED!

I didn't like it at the time which puzzled me since I'm so into Voivod and prog and synthesizers and death metal.

I'd be more than willing to give them another shot...
