jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

A lot of re-releases/remixes for a week!

Also, don't like Annie Lennox a bit, so why do I find "Little Bird" um, alright actually?

Youtubing for "Stick It Out", which like most people I haven't heard in 15 years, I found out that last year Right Said Fred released a cover of "Where Do You Go To My Lovely?". It's easily as good as the original.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

Some things remain unheard for 15 years for good reason.

I bet Dale plays it though.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

We really do need a "worst line from 'Where Do You Go To My Lovely'" poll at some point. "An even tan, on your legs, and on your back". Awesome.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 13:23 (eighteen years ago)

"For a laugh" and, as it were, "ha ha ha ha."

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

thought it was crap at the time but also like 'Little Bird' now (the Utah Saints remix of it knowingly throws in the 'There Must Be Angel' sample AGAIN)

the opposite applies re Kravitz, Ugly Kid Joe and Alice In Chains

Bananarama's cover of Andrea True Connection is alright, bouncier than Rachel's

great use of The Moments 'Sexy Mama' on 'It Was A Good Day' but i will vote, unironically, for Snow

blueski, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

Great top three! Tempted to go for Robin S though.

chap, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

ShortSharpShock ep = Screamager = yoga flame

ledge, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 13:28 (eighteen years ago)

Therapy? passim <<<< "Get Some Therapy" by Steve Wright and the Sisters of Soul (RCA, 1983; #75).

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

I like 25 of these songs, it may well count as an all-time record.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 13:48 (eighteen years ago)

01. Shaggy - Oh Carolina
02. Snow - Informer
03. Shabba Ranks - Mr Loverman {1993}
04. 2 Unlimited - No Limit
09. Michael Jackson - Give In To Me
11. Therapy? - ShortSharpShock (EP)
14. PM Dawn - Looking Through Patient Eyes
17. Whitney Houston - I'm Every Woman
18. Monie Love - Born To BREED
19. Sunscreem - Pressure Us
20. Jade - Don't Walk Away
21. kd Lang - Constant Craving {1993}
22. Robin S - Show Me Love
23. Suede - Animal Nitrate
24. Bananarama - More More More
25. East 17 - Deep
26. Van Halen - Jump (Live)
27. Ice Cube - It Was A Good Day
30. Madonna - Bad Girl

33. Hot Chocolate - It Started With A Kiss {1993}
34. Sister Sledge - Lost In Music {1993}
35. West End Featuring Sybil - The Love I Lost
39. Grid - Crystal Clear

These all win, although that's only 24.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Deep, btw. Very underrated in the E17 canon.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

Bought them on single at the time: Shaggy, Snow, Kravitz (he's done about 3 or 4 great singles, and this was one of them), Lennox (Todd Terry & Utah Saints remixes on 12", yummy!), Jamiroquai (I don't think the dull debut album had dropped yet, so it was still OK to like him), PM Dawn, Sybil (soundtrack to Satdeh night slutting), Whitneh x2 (nothing wrong with her Chaka cover IMO, she sings it rather well), Monie Love (residual late 80s loyalty), kd lang's ode to Constance Craven (there must have been some extra tracks on the CD single worth getting, can't remember), Robin S, Suede, Ice Cube (MUST dig that out again), Apache Indian, West End/Sybil (more slutty soundtracking). I, er, was buying a lot of singles in 1993.

Also good: 2 Unlimited (much as I loathed it at the time), Bluebells(once saw them supporting Orange Juice @ The Venue near Victoria, summer 1981), maybe Michael Jackson (had a lot of time for Dangerous, but can't recall this one; was it that rocky power ballad effort? Hmmm...) East 17 (their best?).

Favourite then: Suede.

Favourite now: I'll make my mind up when I've played the Ice Cube.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

Jade's "Don't Walk Away" for the kill (the woodblock percussion!), but I love the Annie Lennox remix, Bowie's "Jump They Say," and "Animal Nitrate."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

test

Mark G, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

Basically, this was a bloody good chart, and I remember thinking so at the time. It felt as if a corner was being turned...

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it's not bad. Diverse, too.

chap, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

Toronto resident votes for song that mentions Toronto.

2for25, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

;-)

Actually, "Don't Walk Away" was rather DC Go-Go in its own way and I should promote it to the TIP TOP POPS section...

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'mma get that PM Dawn best of thing in HMV this afternoon - I got to listen to the album with the really long title that has "Set Adrift..." on, and it was fairly great.

That said, I have no idea how the one here goes.

William Bloody Swygart, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

This was the one which sampled "Father Figure" by George Michael.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

At the time I justified my approval of the Take That single by contending that it could've been on 'Republic'

blueski, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

altho Barlow & Co. covering 'Ruined In A Day' might've been better still

blueski, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

Whoa, Portrait. I really loved that "Here We Go Again" song in 1993, but I haven't thought about it since. And I was nine at the time.

!Alicia!, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

Robin S - Show Me Love

Handbag house par excellence, up there with Kym Sims' "Too Blind To See It" and Livin' Joy's "Dreamer". All time, hall of fame, genius classic.

Bodrick III, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

Suede - it's the one that sounds the least dated. And I'm really surprised I'm saying that, what with Suede being such a 90's band. I'd have thought that they'd have dated the most.

snoball, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

I love these polls.

Liked at the time (having just turned 12): 2 Unlimited, The Bluebells, Michael Jackson, Bowie, Therapy?, Right Said Fred, East 17, Suede.

Like now: Shaggy, 2 Unlimited, Therapy?, Jade, Ice Cube, KD Lang, Suede.

Actually the Jacko one might still sound decent, Slash on guitar wasn't it? Basically a re-write of 'Dirty Diana' as far as I can remember.

Gavin in Leeds, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

Another dreadful chart, with Suede an obvious highlight.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

Great chart. Shaggy ftw.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Sybil's 'When I'm Good and Ready' because unfortunately I overlooked Robin S (which I would have voted for, had I seen it). 'When I'm Good and Ready' isn't as good but I'm a sucker for a majestic, noble chord progression and the changes into the bridge from the verse get me every time. The beat (PWL take on the deep house/garage of the day) is a bit toytown but the pads compensate for that.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

lol, just about.

Bodrick III, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

20-25 is an absolutely KILLER run.

Jade vs kd vs the criminally underrated "Bad Girl".

hmm.. "Constant Craving" it is.

edwardo, Thursday, 27 March 2008 00:12 (eighteen years ago)

'show me love', still love that stonebridge sound - 'do it for love'; that was great. if it had been 'paper doll' by pm dawn then maybe it would've been a fight. i bought the joey negro remix of 'labour of love' that i think is the one up there and liked it a lot at the time, haven't listened to it in over a decade though.

or something, Thursday, 27 March 2008 01:42 (eighteen years ago)

the todd edwards remix of 'show me love' from a few years later may even top the original.

or something, Thursday, 27 March 2008 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

this chart is off-the-hook awesome.

banriquit, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

It isn't awesome just because New Order aren't in it.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:43 (eighteen years ago)

Worlds Apart - Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel

Can any devotees of failed boy bands remember how this went?

Matt DC, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:47 (eighteen years ago)

Imagine the tavares song being sung by 4 gary barlows while a drum machine keeps rebooting.

Mark G, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:50 (eighteen years ago)

1993 is a belter of a year for #1 singles actually. Might poll the whole year later.

Matt DC, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

Worlds Apart - Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel

Or "Cheeks Apart", as Gary Barlow cheekily dubbed them on the first Take That comeback tour. They were Big In France, no?

mike t-diva, Thursday, 27 March 2008 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure whether any of them went out with Carla Bruni.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 27 March 2008 12:14 (eighteen years ago)

Monie Love - Born To BREED

Or rather, make that B.R.E.E.D. ("Build Relationships where Education and Enlightenment Dominate"). How very Local Authority Mission Statement!

Produced by Prince, which I had quite forgotten.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 27 March 2008 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

#18 was it's decent chart peak - I didn't like it but 'Slice Of The Pie' released 7 years later is GREAT (and I rediscovered 'Grandpa's Party' last week).

blueski, Thursday, 27 March 2008 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

Wasn't Nathan Moore in Worlds Apart for a while?

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 27 March 2008 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 3 April 2008 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

See, this is what happens.. Polls end, no-one goes back!

Mark G, Friday, 4 April 2008 07:07 (eighteen years ago)

Hard to justify going back really when you get crap lurker results like this.

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 4 April 2008 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

Colin Murray played "It Was A Good Day" on R1 last night, as it happens.

But, yeah, Therapy?!?!?!?!?!

mike t-diva, Friday, 4 April 2008 11:25 (eighteen years ago)

Marcello not a Therapy? fan then?
