Desmond.

One fine chart indeed.

Family Dogg - Way Of Life

.. is a lost classic.

L'il Stevie

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 27 March 2008 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

Tried to find something I don't like on here. Failed to.

I can't say the Jim Reeves track brings itself to mind, but going on the title which is good, I dont mind it.

Mark G, Thursday, 27 March 2008 10:56 (eighteen years ago)

I've still got both Family Dogg albums. Even stranger than the hit and without question the weirdest thing ever to involve Albert Hammond.

As every schoolboy knows, Fluff had to announce #36 as "a record by Max Romeo."

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:00 (eighteen years ago)

Tough choice. So many good records, as many have said already. Ended up voting with my heart and going for Elvis.

Pity Pan's People weren't around in 69. Would've liked to have seen their dance for that one.

chap, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

Would have involved stepladders and planks of wood, no doubt.

Mark G, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

"Conversations" has one of the great opening lines - "Do you come here often?"

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:18 (eighteen years ago)

You know those cheapie compilation CD box sets you get around?

Can I be one of the few that actually bought Max Romeo's biggest hit at a Scotch House outlet, on the Scottish border?

Mark G, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:18 (eighteen years ago)

Ah but was it one of those ORIGINAL ARTISTS SOME TRACKS HAVE BEEN RE-RECORDED FOR ENHANCED SOUND QUALITY jobs?

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

Going on immediate OOH YES IT'S THIS ONE! gut instinct, the shortlist reads: Booker T, Steppenwolf, Marvin Gaye. My love of "Something In The Air" took a bashing when it was used for some advert or other, but I need to work on that, it's not you it's me, etc.

No, hang on, sod it. Thunderclap Newman it is, then.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:32 (eighteen years ago)

xpost no actually it was all originals. It being a reggae compilation. And a fine set it was. I think it was that set that Joe Strummer was raving about how fantastic it was that you could easily get this stuff nowadays, back at that time. I remember thinking 'bet he didn't get his at Scotch House!'

Mark G, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, I can't visualise the Max Romeo of "Chase The Devil" and so forth going back into the studio to re-record "Wet Dream." Ah, the convenience for the consumer of dodgy JA licensing deals.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 27 March 2008 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

This is at least better than all of those 90s charts.

Voted "Breakaway"

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 27 March 2008 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

Max was always a bit embarrassed by "Wet Dream". That chart is fantastic

Tom D., Thursday, 27 March 2008 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, what a snapshot: equal parts brilliant and WTF, with all kinds of currents swirling around. Edwin Hawkins and Billy Preston bring back what a Jesus-y time it was. Jim Reeves was like the 2Pac of his day, long-dead but still hot. Peter Sarstedt was but a twinkle in Wes Anderson's eye, and there was just such an overload of magic in the air that there are monster songs throughout the list. For me, it's No. 40, with about an eight-way tie for second place.

briania, Thursday, 27 March 2008 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

hell of a chart...haven't heard the Amen Corner, was John Howard's song a Roxanne Shante-esque "answer track"?...I'm waffling between Tull and the Dells, but will vote the former...

henry s, Thursday, 27 March 2008 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

John Howard?

Tom D., Thursday, 27 March 2008 13:16 (eighteen years ago)

John Howard, as in former Fab 208 Powerplay "Goodbye Suzie" (1974), not a sequel to Amen Corner's "Hello Suzie" which was written by Roy Wood.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 27 March 2008 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

Voted for Dizzy. Surprisingly few really good songs here...
