I get up, I get down. 4
Then taste the fruit of man recorded losing all against the hour. 2
A seasoned witch could call you from the depths of your disgrace, 1
How old will I be before I come of age for you? 1
The time between the notes relates the color to the scenes. 1
We relieve the tension only too find out the master's name.. 1
Love is omnipresent behind the forms of the material world. 1
As armoured movers took approach to overlook the sea. 1
I shook my head and smiled a whisper, knowing all about the place. 1
Two hundred women watch one woman cry, too late. 1
My eyes convinced, eclipsed with the younger moon attained with love. 1
And rearrange your liver to the solid mental grace, 1
A dewdrop can exalt us like the music of the sun, 1
As apart from any reality that you've ever seen and known. 1
Not right away, not right away. 1
In charge of who is there in charge of me. 0
How many millions do we deceive each day? 0
Two million people barely satisfy. 0
Do I look on blindly and say I see the way? 0
The truth is written all along the page. 0
For the crucifixion of her own domain. 0
Saying that she'd take the blame 0
The eyes of honesty can achieve. 0
A constant vogue of triumphs dislocate man, it seems. 0
Now that you find, now that you're whole.0
Called to the seed, right to the sun. 0
Now that it's all over and done, 0
And we reach all this with movements in between the said remark. 0
Called to witness cycles only of the past. 0
On the hill we viewed the silence of the valley, 0
He turned around and pointed, revealing all the human race. 0
Then according to the man who showed his outstretched arm to space, 0
As song and chance develop time, lost social temp'rance rules above. 0
And space between the focus shape ascend knowledge of love. 0
In her white lace, you could clearly see the lady sadly looking. 0
As we cross from side to side, we hear the total mass retain. 0
Leaving all the changes far from far behind. 0
Getting over all the time I had to worry, 0
Passed around a moment clothed in mornings faster than we see. 0
Reaching to call the color of the sky. 0
Crossed the line around the changes of the summer, 0
Not right away, not right away. 0
Close to the edge, down by a river, 0
Down at the edge, round by the corner, 0
And take away the plain in which we move, and choose the course you're running. 0
And assessing points to nowhere, leading ev'ry single one. 0
Close to the edge, just by a river. 0
Seasons will pass you by. 0
Now that it's all over and done, 0
Passing paths that climb halfway into the void. 0
Guessing problems only to deceive the mention, 0
All in all, the journey takes you all the way. 0
Sudden call shouldn't take away the startled memory. 0
There since the cord, the license, or the reasons we understood will be. 0
Sad courage claimed the victims standing still for all to see, 0
There's you, the time, the logic, or the reasons we don't understand. 0
I crucified my hate and held the word within my hand. 0
It changed as almost strained amidst clear manna from above 0
Now that you find, now that you're whole. 0
And achieve it all with music that came quickly from afar, 0

'taste the fruit of man' is too good to pass up

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 31 March 2008 09:33 (eighteen years ago)

Ever encountered one of those web pages filled with computer-generated random sentences that are grammatically correct yet completely nonsensical and meaningless? I mean, stuff like "They are recommending against the autumn now, won't pull papers later" or "Just now, pins irrigate within sad colleges, unless they're short" or "He might crudely reject above Moammar when the rural smogs dream between the sticky mountain", to name three authentic examples? I'll bet Jon Anderson would've loved that, if that technology existed back in '72!

Truest lyric here: "Now that it's all over and done" because it was true. Almost.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 31 March 2008 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

I'll bet Jon Anderson would've loved that, if that technology existed back in '72!

Only if they sounded good. You know, that was the point about most of Anderson's writing back then. He looks at the human voice as an instrument, and was constantly looking for words that sounded good in a musical context rather than words that did really make a lot of sense.

Which is why a lot of his lyrics look pointless and pompous to most people.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 31 March 2008 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

Yes = Duran Duran, in that case.

Mark G, Monday, 31 March 2008 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

Yep, I think Simon Le Bon has said something about thinking in the same way. Dunno if he ever referenced Jon Anderson in that regard though.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 31 March 2008 11:23 (eighteen years ago)

wau, Jon Anderson and Duran Duran in the same post

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

Regarding Jon writing his lyrics to fit the melody, um, it was okay. But there were no lions! Or tigers! Or bears! No fairy floss! Toffee apple! No clowns.

I voted for 'I get up I get down'.

It's the key Yes moment, the tipping point where they reference James Brown and the layers of the band are revealed. Yes are about a balance of textures, have too little and you get the weaker songs on the early albums, have too many and not have them balanced and you get tales / relayer.

Before CTTE, Yes music depends too heavily on their fairly average Sgt Pepper chops, sure it's occasionally an impressive juggling act, but it's still just juggling and in symphonic pop terms, its all been juggled before.

It's apt this lyric is a ying yan unresolvable contradiction too, because rather than being at a point on the spectrum (a spectrum of say Bruford at one end and Wakeman at the other) close to the edge manages to be at several places at once.

But the breakdown in the song, the James Brown take it to the bridge, I get up I get down, is the pivot, the point where Yes change.

Wait -- are there really people out there who don't realize that this is Jon Anderson's attempt at a straightforward Christian lyric?

Yeah I listened to it on a long drive once and came to the conclusion that it's got to be one of the best prog albums ever. It shows you all that Yes were at the time and all that they could have been.

this is far and away the best bit of the song

if we're talking prog taxonomy, Yes are probably in tier 1/2 depending on which section. they're fucking amazing at times, fairly innocuous at others - no really concentrated sense of purpose. i still like them very much.

imago, Monday, 24 March 2014 00:52 (twelve years ago)

no really concentrated sense of purpose it's right in the name you boob

j., Monday, 24 March 2014 00:53 (twelve years ago)

haha dude they were all over the place thematically, even if they played tite

imago, Monday, 24 March 2014 00:55 (twelve years ago)

compare them to a machine of lucid-dream devastation like magma, neu or vdgg and cmon man

the lack of focus is half the fun

imago, Monday, 24 March 2014 00:57 (twelve years ago)

all the themes are ~~one~~!!!

j., Monday, 24 March 2014 00:58 (twelve years ago)

lol

the yes album = relayer = the song 'awaken' >>> ctte >>>fragile >>>tfto > don't care

imago, Monday, 24 March 2014 01:01 (twelve years ago)

o wait 'drama' probably belongs somewhere near 'fragile'

imago, Monday, 24 March 2014 01:02 (twelve years ago)

I think the thing that really shocks me about this album is how much it bangs.

My brother and I once spent a good half an hour cruising down the interstate and making up increasingly-absurd lyrics to a nonexistent Yes song. But we could never surpass the masters, though we strive to quell the striving of our hearts' desire in this time of tithing to the wizard's keep.
