I love both of these but "Dub Be Good To Me" is so classic it's painful.

Tim F, Monday, 31 March 2008 11:15 (eighteen years ago)

I generally disapprove of this kind of mixing two songs together and have done since Pink Project and Clubhouse started doing it by 1983.

That being said, "Finest Dreams" is obviously the better one out of these two because "The Things That Dreams Are Made Of" is such a great and underrated song.

Maybe it's a time of life thing (I was in my late teens when Dub Be Good To Me came out) but the Beats International track just seems more timeless.

glue_factory, Monday, 31 March 2008 11:18 (eighteen years ago)

Also "Dub Be Good To Me" is one of the biggest singles from that whole minature movement of dubby dance-pop from the turn of the decade (see also Soul II Soul, the early Smith & Mighty singles incl. Fresh 4's "Wishing On A Star", Soho's "Hippychick", Neneh's "Manchild") and so it stands in nicely for all sorts of stuff I like.

Whereas "Finest Dreams", while excellent, doesn't strike me as being shorthand for the excitement of bootlegging in the same way - or in the way of the earlier run of big tracks like "A Stroke of Genius" or "Freak Like Me" or "Get Your Faith On" etc.

The Richard X album was released about 18 months too late.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 31 March 2008 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

It was roughly a collection of his work from the past two years then though, wasn't it?

It's a great album, although I prefer his production work for the likes of Annie and Bertine Zetlitz to what he has done himself.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 31 March 2008 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

(released under his own name, I mean)

"Finest" is a rote for-the-ladies love-rap, but it also features P singing Kelis and Richard X's "Finest Dreams" on the hook, which is just weird enough to be endearing.

and what, Monday, 31 March 2008 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

Both great, Dub edges it.

chap, Monday, 31 March 2008 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

i like them both, but
a.) only one of them announces itself as "jam hot", and
b.) anything i ever owned on cassingle trumps anything i didn't.
ergo, "dub."

surely we have to add Bassomatics Fascinating Rhythm to that list ?
Beats Int. gets my vote, however, they are both classic.

mark e, Monday, 31 March 2008 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

the renegade soundwave remix of 'fascinating rhythm' is the best song-i-own-on-vinyl-and-don't-think-is-on-cd, and one of the best uk house tracks period. more dubby even than the main single mix. begging for a ysi.

it is on a bass-o-matic CD as a b-side, but no compilation so far as i can see.

great thread, reminded me of the existence of fresh 4 'wishing on a star' and the bassomatic track. keenly hunting out this renegade soundwave remix of bassomatic but no joy yet though i'll be watching mark e's blog very closely!

ilx really needs a thread about "that whole minature movement of dubby dance-pop from the turn of the decade"

I actually prefer Finest Dreams, I think, by far the best thing on that Richard X record.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 10:28 (eighteen years ago)

i would vote for Foul Play's 'Finest Illusion'

blueski, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

I'm a fan of "Finest Dreams" but I never knew it was a mash-up. His "Freak Like Me" remix from the same record was also way awesome.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.
