Well, not quite, but he will this year.....

You're a flesh-eating Nazi.
― Scik Mouthy, Monday, 31 March 2008 11:21 (eighteen years ago)
Does everyone in Norway get a free Dr. Pepper when he gets out?
― StanM, Monday, 31 March 2008 11:34 (eighteen years ago)
I doubt so, as Dr. Pepper is only available on import in Norway ;)
― Geir Hongro, Monday, 31 March 2008 12:16 (eighteen years ago)
surely at this point you are just doing self-parody
― sanskrit, Monday, 31 March 2008 12:17 (eighteen years ago)
FALSE GEIR
― Scik Mouthy, Monday, 31 March 2008 12:18 (eighteen years ago)
death to false geir
― latebloomer, Monday, 31 March 2008 12:19 (eighteen years ago)
I don't reckon Geir's been on ILM AT ALL since the relaunch when we had to reregister; I think this is Dom in character. Or Bimble. Or Dan Perry. or The Lex.
― Scik Mouthy, Monday, 31 March 2008 12:19 (eighteen years ago)
Did we miss the parole hearing news? (was going to happen in April 2008, or was that just a rumor?)
― StanM, Thursday, 15 May 2008 15:11 (eighteen years ago)
As far as I know, he is still in jail.
― Geir Hongro, Thursday, 15 May 2008 22:09 (eighteen years ago)
Apparently not yet: http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.vg.no%2Fnyheter%2Finnenriks%2Fartikkel.php%3Fartid%3D513005&hl=no&ie=UTF8&sl=no&tl=en
(And note that Google Translate's Norwegian to English translation is by no means perfect yet, but I think you can capture the essence here)

Thanks for the update, Geir!
*puts away gun*
(just kidding ;-) )
― StanM, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 15:05 (eighteen years ago)
He clearly is assured a well-paid future touring the lecture circuit.
― Siegbran, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 15:11 (eighteen years ago)
Is that really Varg in the picture?
― Reatards Unite, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 16:11 (eighteen years ago)
Who is he and what's all this about? (Just curious; couldn't read the translated English page of the story linked above).
― Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 11 June 2008 16:12 (eighteen years ago)
Some white supremacist Norwegian dude, take your pick
― Tom D., Wednesday, 11 June 2008 16:13 (eighteen years ago)
Hm. He looks the part. Why was he in prison?
― Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 11 June 2008 16:19 (eighteen years ago)
He killed Bambi.

Google is your friend Daniel
― J0hn D., Wednesday, 11 June 2008 16:29 (eighteen years ago)
I'm just imagining Geir, on a lovely late spring Wednesday morning, cheerily checking the status of a convicted white supremacist and murderer over coffee and croissants while ABBA plays softly in the background.
― strgn, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 16:33 (eighteen years ago)
And probably the most influential dude in Metal of the last fifteen years?
― Siegbran, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 16:33 (eighteen years ago)
Indeed it is. Horrible story. Hardly seems like Geir's type of thing, but I guess there's a morbid fascination aspect to it.
― Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 11 June 2008 16:39 (eighteen years ago)
Biggest musical hero in Norway since Grieg I imagine
― Tom D., Wednesday, 11 June 2008 16:40 (eighteen years ago)
The problem is: the stuff he recorded 1992-1993, around and during the murder/church burnings, is very very very very very very good.
― StanM, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 16:43 (eighteen years ago)
but not the electronic drivel he made in jail?
― Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 17:29 (eighteen years ago)
No, that sucks so bad he should be locked up for that alone.
― StanM, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 17:30 (eighteen years ago)
lol
I have to say Stan, I never saw you as a black metal fan.
― Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 17:31 (eighteen years ago)
Me neither, but I wanted to know what it was like, so I checked it out and found myself liking some of it quite a lot (e.g. Burzum & Bathory)
― StanM, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 17:36 (eighteen years ago)
That picture looks like Varg's about to enjoy some COOLER RANCH(TM) DORITOS(R)(TM).
That electronic stuff is awful... ughhh. I remember he said something like that himself when he decided not to finish the trilogy of it.
― burt_stanton, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 17:36 (eighteen years ago)
"We're not letting you out, but here's some Doritos."
― StanM, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 17:45 (eighteen years ago)
No Doritos. That's obviously some cd/dvd since that store is Platekompaniet. Norway's biggest record/dvd/entertainment chain.
What's on your iPod Varg?
― MRZBW, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 17:52 (eighteen years ago)
Er... How locked are Norwegian prisons, by the way?
― StanM, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 17:53 (eighteen years ago)
We've kind of been over this I think. He's had home visits and so forth. The notion of how prison works, what its function is, etc., differs greatly from society to society. The model we use here in the U.S. is extremely stupid and counterproductive.
― J0hn D., Wednesday, 11 June 2008 17:59 (eighteen years ago)
(at least that's what I think I recall hearing abt Varg's deal, maybe I'm wrong and this is just a clever photoshop or a shot from his brief "prison break" which IIRC was a failure-to-report-back from a visit)
― J0hn D., Wednesday, 11 June 2008 18:01 (eighteen years ago)
Now that you mention it - this has indeed already been discussed elsewhere. (Can't find the exact thread at the moment though - it was about how he had access to computers and how the place looked so nice during a (tv?) interview or something)
― StanM, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 18:04 (eighteen years ago)
Cool jailbird cap!
Or probably just squeaking into the top 40 as long as you grade on quantity alone?
The music's worth grabbing, of course. If you don't know the backstory by now, 16 years after the fact, then Googling "Count Varg Kristian Grishnakh Burzum Vikernes" will only confuse the shit out of you. Just wait for the upcoming Lords of Chaos movie, I'm sure that will explain all.
Here's who does deserve a release date: the West Memphis Three. There's a new evidence hearing scheduled for September, the biggest development in this case in years. The defense is submitting the results of modern DNA analysis that show no match between Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jesse Misskelley and any of the collected evidence on record. No hairs, no specks of skin, no blood, not a spot of incriminating anything anywhere. Even John Mark Byers is on their side now, which is pretty dramatic. But the presiding judge is still the same Judge Burnett that oversaw the original trial, so who the hell knows...he keeps getting promoted just as the case ascends through the court system over the years. He'll probably be on the US Supreme Court if this case ever makes it there.

This is good news. Well except the last part about the judge.

But they dressed in black! Who else but satanic child murderers dresses in black? That's right, nobody (*). Therefore, guilty.
