i sort of know what he's going on about. as a teenager in the 90s, music seemed to be a precursor to a more metropolitan, understanding society. if people could be a bit more open in their tastes and think about the culture they consumed, what it meant, etc, then why not open up politically as well?

although i think reynolds is more about music as an agent of change, whereas i'm thinking in terms as music as a sign of what's to come, the soundtrack running a bit ahead.
