I love this site, on a slightly related note, because it's got loads of Stan Cornyn's brilliant Warner / Reprise ads from the late 60s. As well as writing some great sleevenotes for the likes of the Beau Brummels and Frank Sinatra, he also wrote some groovy ads. Best of all is the little reply coupons at the bottom and the marvellous little epiphet "Randy Newman is, and will of course continue to be on Warner Reprise where he belongs". That's such a sweet sentiment.

I tried to join the Split Enz fan club when I was like, all of 11 years old. I got a cursory postcard in the mail, and no further follow-up. What a dodgy operation; fuck those guys.

"Utah Saints use samples to FREE us from the confines of popular instruments. THE sample may be a vocal phrase, 100 guitars, or everyday MACHINES and animals. These are all just instruments to us. No tape was used in the making of this album. TAKE CONTROL of the machine NOW!"

The capitalized words are written with a larger font in the sleeve, note the "hidden" message.

free the 100 machines?

Mark G, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

100 is not in a larger font Mark

Hee! I was thinking same thing as Mark.

the boston liner notes about not using synthesizers are always good for a laugh, and also possibly textbook rockist paradigm as well

Any Blue Öyster Cult fans (aside from myself) send $0.50 and a SASE for the lyrics?

I always liked:

"DEAD FREAKS UNITE: Who are you? Where are you? How are you?
Send us your name and address and we'll keep you informed.
Dead Heads, P.O. Box 1065, San Rafael, CA 94901."

Queen also had a "No Synthesizers!" credit in the Night At The Opera liner notes...

Freddie Mercury as rockist just rings wrong.

I did get a photograph of Billy Joel smoking a cigar from the Root Beer Rag. Their Long Island office phone number is what's dialed at the beginning of the "Sometimes A Fantasy" video (and song.)

Ha! This takes me back.

When I was eleven, twelve, me and my buddy were heavily into 2 Live Crew. I'll explain: Me So Horny topped the charts, and being Dutch, their music was - although obviously blatantly offensive - tolerated widely. This was due to one crucial fact: people don't speak English in The Netherlands. Everyone understands it, the fcuk's and all the swearing foremost, but it's not the native language. So people don't take offense that fast.
(Hell, we even entered in the school's playback competition, with a rendition of the evergreens and now obviously classic *ahum* 'We Want Some Pussy' and 'Bitches Ain't Shit'... in front of a class of pre-schoolers!) But I digress...

We had all of 2 Live Crew's cd's, and in every booklet they promised to make you a full fledged member of the Crew, if you'd send a letter with your address to some address in "Liberty City". So we hopefully sent out a letter to this place called Liberty City, and waited in full anticipation...

It took three months before the letter came back, returned to sender being stamped 'undeliverable'!

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 26 May 2008 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

If it makes you feel better, I recognize you as a full member of the Crew.

Z S, Monday, 26 May 2008 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

You don't know how much that means to me.
