This is indeed rather easy for me. The title track, "The Winner Takes It All", "The Piper" and "Andante, Andante" are all great songs. But "Lay All Your Love On Me" is my all time favourite ABBA moment, so it has to be that one.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 June 2008 00:23 (seventeen years ago)

The magnificent title track utterly dominates the rest of this puerile festering pabulum, no contest!

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 26 June 2008 00:26 (seventeen years ago)

Alex?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 26 June 2008 05:28 (seventeen years ago)

"Suppah-pah Troupah-pah." Better overall albums towards the end but less high points.

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 26 June 2008 07:14 (seventeen years ago)

Andante Andante is the big clunker here. Right guys?

everything, Thursday, 26 June 2008 07:25 (seventeen years ago)

Someone please tell me why Agnetha shoves one arm in the air during the chorus of that song.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 26 June 2008 07:50 (seventeen years ago)

I always thought that she was pointing at the titular spotlight?
Anyway, "On And On And On", because it's a return to their rockier early stuff. But it's the same thing with the later albums, three-or-four-ish great songs surrounded by sludge.

snoball, Thursday, 26 June 2008 08:28 (seventeen years ago)

"the later albums"?

everything, Thursday, 26 June 2008 08:38 (seventeen years ago)

Everything up to and possibly including "Arrival" sounds much more like "a band making an album" in that the music sounds a lot more like a collaboration between the four members and also the backing musicians, however much that may or may not have been the case in reality. Later albums sound like two songwriters locked in a shed, with enough ideas for three/four great songs, but then almost recycling older ideas to fill out the space on the album.

snoball, Thursday, 26 June 2008 08:43 (seventeen years ago)

if it had been on there, i'd have said "under attack", but that's a bonus really. I've gone for "Winner Takes It All" - fucking heartbreaking, even for this album!

the next grozart, Thursday, 26 June 2008 11:14 (seventeen years ago)

woops, got mixed up between this and visitors :-(

Disagree in the case of "Super Trouper". Strongly disagree in the case of "The Visitors".

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 June 2008 18:24 (seventeen years ago)

And the girls never contributed much other than vocals and beautiful vocal harmonies anyway. Stikkan Andersson may have contributed less and less musically throughout their career though.

The Winner Takes It All x 3

i'm not gonna lie, 'mamma mia' is my sex in the city for the summer movie

The Visitors >>> ABBA GOLD

Milton Parker, Thursday, 26 June 2008 18:37 (seventeen years ago)

A close call between "The Winner Takes It All" and "Lay All Your Love On Me," but went with "Lay."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 26 June 2008 18:39 (seventeen years ago)

The Visitors >>> ABBA GOLD

If you replace >>> with >, then I might actually agree with you.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 June 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

The Visitors >>> ABBA GOLD

I'm not counting "ABBA Gold" as it is a compilation album.

snoball, Thursday, 26 June 2008 18:50 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Awesome, thanks snoball.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

Lay All Your Love On Me is a great song, but I have had to go for the saddest of all songs.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Right 1, 2 in the right order.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

Really? I'd take 3 over 2. Surprised you'd diss the slamming electro disco for a power ballad.

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

That's a great power ballad though. I suppose 2 and 3 are arguable. Either way 1 is the best.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

I am surprised the title track has done so well... I mean, it's grand, but there are much better tunes on the album. Maybe plurality voting has let a less preferred candidate win again.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 3 July 2008 11:26 (seventeen years ago)

two years pass...

I really like "Me and I" even if the lyrics are kind of o_O

And god damn, the chorus of "Lay All Your Love on Me". If you don't feel compelled to sing along to this you are a weirdo.

from now on small breasts will never be the cause of your embarrassment (corey), Saturday, 31 July 2010 23:42 (fifteen years ago)

i always hear the chorus as being sung by undead zombies.

Shit, no votes for 'Me and I'?

Turrican, Sunday, 1 May 2016 20:23 (ten years ago)

'Me and I' is so great

Stoner Gabbneb & the Cocoon of Cluelessness (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 1 May 2016 22:07 (ten years ago)

I completely agree, so many great moments in that song: the synthesizer intro, the "OH NO, OH NO!" part, the killer chorus and the vocodered bits at the end, the sustained, harmonised "IIIIIII" and the way it descends over the chord change... and the rhythm section superbly strong throughout.

Turrican, Monday, 2 May 2016 01:18 (ten years ago)

Portishead should have covered Super Trooper.

how girl's (how's life), Monday, 2 May 2016 10:28 (ten years ago)
