They've had fifteen singles since "D'You Know What I Mean" and one of them was called "Go Let It Out"?!

some dude, Friday, 27 June 2008 01:32 (seventeen years ago)

i can't not vote for champagne supernova

electricsound, Friday, 27 June 2008 01:36 (seventeen years ago)

And sooooooooo Sally can wait...

Urgh, using random girls' first names to give an illusion of profundity, such a fucking cheap songwriting trick. Worst Oasis song in every respect, which makes it pretty high on the list for worst song of the 90s.

chap, Friday, 27 June 2008 01:58 (seventeen years ago)

"slowly walking down the hall, faster than a cannon ball. where were you when we were getting high?"

Worst lyrics to an otherwise good song?

Cunga, Friday, 27 June 2008 02:01 (seventeen years ago)

even though i would never say that oasis had good lyrics on the whole (first 2 albums, anyway), somehow I like the "slowly walking" line. it forms a weird, druggy impression that doesn't really make literal sense, but which i can understand despite not being able to visualize it, per se

res, Friday, 27 June 2008 03:37 (seventeen years ago)

i'd have to say that "she's got dirty dishes of the brain" (from the chorus of "Some Might Say") is much worse than that one

res, Friday, 27 June 2008 03:42 (seventeen years ago)

actually, now that I listen to it, that song has a _lot_ of awful lyrics. I'm talking REALLY bad. "and my dog's been itchin' / itchin' in the kitchen once again"

but maybe this has something to do with that cockney language thing. god, i hope so.

res, Friday, 27 June 2008 03:46 (seventeen years ago)

Oasis lyrics have never bothered me.

I always heard it as "dirty dishes on the brain" (as in her domesticism is taking over her life", and "my soul's been itchin' in the kitchen" -which I suppose means the same thing.

If not quite disowned, this one is never played live and didn't make it to the greatest hits album, despite it reaching number one.

i don't have strong memories of any of the post-1997 ones but 'lyla' and 'the importance of being earnest' were amazingly bad. this is a tough poll.

"Look into the wall of my mind's eye
I think I know, but I don't know why
The questions are the answers you might need"

"No-one can give me the air that's mine to breathe"

"D'You Know What I Mean?" has it, then.

Noel G is a lyrical genius compared to C Martin. Lyla was atrocious tho.

blueski, Friday, 27 June 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)

I always heard it as "dirty dishes on the brain"

you might be right, but it doesn't change the fact that the preceding line is "the sink is full of fishes"! which is, frankly, stunning.

res, Friday, 27 June 2008 12:54 (seventeen years ago)

if i were a walrus, i'd have a sink full of fishes, if you catch my drift.

I have always found "Live Forever" a very evocative tune. YOu know, it takes me back to a time when a songwriter could say anything, and young people could sing along and old people didn't have to complain about it on the internet. rama lama fi fi fi

people explosion, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

rama lama fi fi fi

That's not how I remember Live Forever.

Neil S, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

there's a kind of oscillation between pretentious-asinine ('don't look back in anger') and stoopid-asinine ('roll with it'), and i think the former variety is marginally worse.

banriquit, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

No "Wibbling Rivalry" no cred.

Also "Champagne Supernova" wasn't a single.

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

Too many good candidates to choose from here.

And, also, while most of these lyrics suck dogshit, I love the tunes. Which is way more important considering we are speaking of music and not poetry.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

My friend has an extra ticket to see Oasis next month and I think he'll end up asking me to go. It should be interesting in the sense that I haven't cared about Oasis in years. Sure they've got daft lyrics, but with them that's really not the point is it?

Bimble, Friday, 27 June 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, have you ever seen these guys getting interviewed? How on earth could these guys possibly write good lyrics? I mean, Liam Gallagher makes Paul Gascoine sound like Albert Einsten.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 27 June 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

well, I've always found noel's down to earth logic pretty amusing !

AleXTC, Friday, 27 June 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

Now that's an elocution class I'd love to be a fly on the wall of Geir!!

like trying to find a piece of hay in a haystack. i abstain.

the more i think about it, the more i think i can forge a reasonable ... OK, totally unreasonable, but fuck it ... case for oasis being responsible for every single misfortune that has ever befallen anyone ever. seriously, i loathe this band with every fibre of my being.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 27 June 2008 23:46 (seventeen years ago)

By the way, the Oasis song that inspired this poll was "Little By Little". Unlike Champagne Supernova, Supersonic & co, it is an attempt at something lyrically profound and touching and its absurdity is therefore all the more offensive.

verse 1:
We the people fight for our existence
We don't claim to be perfect
But we're free
We dream our dreams alone
With no resistance
Fading like the stars we wish to be

bridge:
You know I didn't mean
What I just said
But my God woke up
On the wrong side of his bed
And it just don't matter now

chorus:
Cos little by little
We gave you everything
You ever dreamed of
Little by little
The wheels of your life
Have slowly fallen off
Little by little
You have to give it all in all your life
And all the time I just ask myself why
You're really here

verse 2:
True perfection has to be imperfect
I know that that sounds foolish but it's true
The day has come
And now you'll have to accept
The life inside your head we give to you

Can't stand the band, but Noel's actually a very entertaining and occasionally insightful interviewee.

i don't love the tunes, but Geir has the right idea here. i can apply the principle to other "mainstream" stuff that i love with sometimes cringeworthy lyrics (case in point: Smashing Pumpkins/Billy Corgan).

stephen, Saturday, 28 June 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

However

'But all I found was cigarettes and alcohol'

Oasis spot on. As profound as it gets.

Certainly beats the fuck out of 'Straight Edge' by Reverend Mackaye

Fer Ark, Saturday, 28 June 2008 08:16 (seventeen years ago)

What does asinine mean btw? Sounds like some sort of liquorice sweet?

Mark G, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 07:12 (seventeen years ago)

OK. Ended up just going for the debut single, for the line "I'm feeling supersonic, give me Gin & Tonic". Deep...... :)

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 08:30 (seventeen years ago)

"You make me laugh, give me your autograph" is not far behind either ;)

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 08:40 (seventeen years ago)

Apparently, they were having a bad session recording "Live Forever" for their first single, so they quickly knocked up "Supersonic" in the studio. Thus, the die was cast.

Mark G, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 08:46 (seventeen years ago)

"D'you know what I mean?" for me, since that particularly asinine question is basically the whole of the lyrics.

Neil S, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 09:00 (seventeen years ago)

Champagne Supernova and Morning Glory were not released as singles in Britain.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 10:16 (seventeen years ago)

But in Australia/the US, right? for the purposes of this poll, they totally count.

'Champagne Supernova' gets my vote.

I think 'Supersonic''s lyrics are ace! Or at least, i did at the time: they made me giggle and pay attention, and i loved how insanely cocky Liam's delivery was, as if each line was a Great Profound Life-Altering Truth despite being basically poppycock. When he got bored of doing that as the band got more famous, the shitty lyrics started getting annoying.

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 13:55 (seventeen years ago)

Dale played "Shakermaker" on POTP on Sunday. It seemed to go on for 98 hours.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

OK. Ended up just going for the debut single, for the line "I'm feeling supersonic, give me Gin & Tonic". Deep...... :)

It at least makes sense on a certain level

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 14:07 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, and it goes into "You can have it all, but how much do you want it?" which seemed prescient.

So many indie bands 'wanted it all' but couldn't be arsed really.

Niles Caulder, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 07:20 (seventeen years ago)

the problem, for scientific accuracy, is that no-one's heard the last 20 or so.

Champagne Supernova and Morning Glory were not released as singles in Britain.

a) you'll notice me specifically acknowledging that in my post of one minute later, or four thousand, eight hundred and twenty three minutes before yours.
b) you'll not notice the phrase "released in Britain" in the thread title.
