You know all this shite with people playing their classic album in order in concerts? What would be the most dreadful conceivable example of this?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

Weller playing "Wildwood" has to be up there.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

Ted Leo plays "Tej Leo."

Simon H., Monday, 30 June 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

I would KILL to see Ted Leo play "Tej Leo" in full. I saw him a shitload during that era, and he always did very cool things with that Echoplex.

Savannah Smiles, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

it would suck balls if my bloody valentine came back with no new songs and tried to recreate the myths attaching to the 'loveless' tour, only with added earplugs. fortunately kevin shields is too lazy to even attempt that.

banriquit, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

A shit band play one of their shit albums.

Raw Patrick, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

Prince doing 'Dirty Mind', minus the bits which conflict with his Jehovah's witnessism.

Either that or Neil Young doing 'Trans'....

Prince doing 'Dirty Mind', minus the bits which conflict with his Jehovah's witnessism.

This conjured up an image in my mind of Prince standing aloof on the stage fiddling with his guitar and thinking super hard of something he could play fpr 90 minutes, or until his audience completely left.

Cunga, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

that is more or less the image I was gunning for...

linea, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

Bob Dyaln could release a 30th anniversary live album tribute to Live at Budokahn.

Dave Grohl + Kris Novoselic + the other guy on a big screen behind them: Nevermind!

(if these guys were allowed to do it, why not Nirvana? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNWy9dnO9kg )

StanM, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

Goddamn it, a "Trans" one would be awesome, too!

Savannah Smiles, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

the existing footage of the Trans Berlin tour is weirdly awesome. Neil lurching around doing his stoner-marching-dance while singing into his vocoder = klassick. nils lofgren interpretive dancing = added bonus!

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

this is a great question! i don't have an answer to it yet though

Tracer Hand, Monday, 30 June 2008 17:00 (seventeen years ago)

bad bands playing bad music is fucking lame.

banriquit, Monday, 30 June 2008 21:26 (seventeen years ago)

it would suck balls if my bloody valentine came back with no new songs and tried to recreate the myths attaching to the 'loveless' tour, only with added earplugs. fortunately kevin shields is too lazy to even attempt that.

this is what they are doing, unless I'm misunderstanding you.

i think the worst would be some band where half the members involved in the original album are already dead or have quit.

akm, Monday, 30 June 2008 21:54 (seventeen years ago)

like, "ringo and paul do Sgt. Pepper"

akm, Monday, 30 June 2008 21:54 (seventeen years ago)

Bubble and Scrape is a great album. What's the problem with that one? On the other hand, seeing Thurston Moore play Psychic Hearts at ATP should be pretty fucking lame. I've never seen ANYONE under any circumstance say that album is anything better than mediocre (and I agree). While I also hate Built to Spill with a passion, I can at least accept its inclusion because it has a "classic" status among indie rockers. But they must have been really reaching for a final act when they chose that Thurston album.

Not "Love see no colour" then?

The only example of a band that had a number one album, following it up with an album that did not chart at all!

Mark G, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 10:24 (seventeen years ago)

The correct answer is of course Rattle And Hum.

Mike Patton doing Adult Themes for Voice would be pretty bad.

stephen, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 23:36 (seventeen years ago)

but is any of this actually worse than Ghostland Observatory today?

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 23:40 (seventeen years ago)

i think the worst would be some band where half the members involved in the original album are already dead or have quit.

the Who playing tommy in 1989 sucked balls. the Who playing quadrophenia in 1996-1997 was astonishingly good. in both cases, half the original band -- which is to say, keith moon -- was long dead.

of course, like most of the other shit they did first, it's doubtful they'll get proper credit/blame for starting the whole "bands playing entire old-ass albums in concert" trend.

Lawrence the Looter, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 01:54 (seventeen years ago)

That there MBV show from June, which is or was posted on The Return Of My Bloody Valentine thread, does have some lame tracks, like ,"Please sir, is thise where you want theeze soundz?" (plop) But also some good ones, while the guitar beastie gradually gets all waked up again--and you got volume control on yer download-playing device. On the other hand, maybe: just got a press release heralding the New York Dolls Live At The Fillmore (yep, it's recent)

dow, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 02:12 (seventeen years ago)

Standing on the Shoulder of Giants.
Dirty Work.

Trans would be fine, but Landing on Water or Life would be really unsatisfying.
