Tape Store, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:11 (seventeen years ago)

jesus, this is tuff -- i gotta go with "ain't no nigga," the first jay-z song that i loved.

Eisbaer, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

Hard Knock Life vs. 99 Problems

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

Blue Magic is great, some dude

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

let's just pretend I posted this again except replace "No Hook" with "Blue Magic": best rapper alive

some dude, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

I listen to "Blue Magic" more than "Roc Boys"

Tape Store, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

i thought "money ain't a thing" w/jermaine was a single

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

it was technically a song on JD's album featuring Jay, and then a bonus track on Jay's album, so wiki or wherever ablaeser got the list from probably put in features and not solo singles.

some dude, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry if this list was not definitive, it was jacked straight off Wikipedia. That said, I think it's still comprehensive enough.

ablaeser, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i'd say it works. if anything i'd trim a lot of the street singles and double a-sides that never got videos.

some dude, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:37 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not even trying to nit-pick, but was "La La La (Excuse Me Again)" not a single? Cause that's top five material for me. I always thought it was a particular high point for the Neptunes too.

matt2, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

aagh so hard! uhhhhhh

'can i get a...' vs 'big pimpin' vs 'do it again' vs 'can't knock the hustle' aagh

went with the ain't no/presidents option but it's kinda unfair cuz it's two awesome songs for one vote.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

Best singles artist in rap history

...really?

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

he probably has more classick singles than any rapper in history

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 21:15 (seventeen years ago)

Whiney may be OTM.

still "Ain't No Nigga," despite "Song Cry," "Big Pimpin'," "99 Problems," "Can't Knock the Hustle," and "Izzo."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 21:18 (seventeen years ago)

i'm trying to think of someone who would have more...LL Cool J maybe?

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

snoop?

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

(if you count some dre singles)

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

This ain't the show, I'm just EQ-in' it.

Izzo, then Can I Get A...

incredible list

Euler, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

(if you count some dre singles)

But if you do that, to be fair you have to count Jay's featureds also and I'd say he still wins.

ablaeser, Thursday, 31 July 2008 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

yeah but i don't think that's really fair, i mean the snoop is pretty central to the chronic, he seems like more the main rapper on the songs he's on, not just like a cameo thing.

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 31 July 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for Feelin' It, but it could have been Can't Knock the Hustle, Girls Girls Girls, Dead Presidents II...any of em

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 31 July 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago)

and Jay-Z is the main rapper on all the Memphis Bleek songs he's on, what's the dif? (xpost)

some dude, Thursday, 31 July 2008 00:20 (seventeen years ago)

am i the only one voting "Encore"?

stephen, Thursday, 31 July 2008 01:04 (seventeen years ago)

most definitely yes

It's a fave but doesn't make any sense outside the context of the rest of his career, so I couldn't vote for it in good conscience. Also I don't think it's as good as "Can't Knock the Hustle."

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 31 July 2008 01:09 (seventeen years ago)

Oh wait, i might go for "Izzo"

Tape Store, Thursday, 31 July 2008 03:30 (seventeen years ago)

Was Where I'm From not a single?

Hurting 2, Thursday, 31 July 2008 03:41 (seventeen years ago)

I'll probably vote Jigga What Jigga Who, but I might throw a bone to the underrated Jigga My Nigga

there were a bunch of songs from Vol. 1 that weren't singles but he made videos for them in Streets Is Watching and some of them got play on BET, that was one of them.

some dude, Thursday, 31 July 2008 13:10 (seventeen years ago)

omg, totally forgot about this one

Tape Store, Friday, 1 August 2008 00:28 (seventeen years ago)

I finally decided. When it came down to it, I really couldn't knock the hustle.

That said, I wish that Imaginary Player was a single so I could vote for it.

i will never comprehend people who think that '99 problems' is better than any other jay-z singles.

otherwise, (can i get a) whoop whoop

lex pretend, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

silent majority wins again

PappaWheelie V, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

I voted 99. There's a lot I like as much, but I vote for things I think'll be underrepresented

Niles Caulder, Thursday, 7 August 2008 06:43 (seventeen years ago)

Which makes me a dick, I guess

J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 August 2008 08:19 (seventeen years ago)

rong cuz he thought other dummies werent gonna vote for 99 problems or rong cuz 99 problems sucks balls? both i guess

J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 August 2008 08:20 (seventeen years ago)

there's at least 5 songs that didn't get a vote that i'd take over 99 problems

J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 August 2008 08:21 (seventeen years ago)

99 probz is alright, but not even top 10 jigga trax

deej, Thursday, 7 August 2008 08:22 (seventeen years ago)

hating on "99 Problems" is just as boring as proclaiming it the best Jay-Z song ever

The Reverend, Thursday, 7 August 2008 08:53 (seventeen years ago)

sargnt88: is hating 99 problems a challop?

J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 August 2008 08:55 (seventeen years ago)

no answer from deej

J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 August 2008 08:55 (seventeen years ago)

"99 Problems" is cool, it was just at the tail end of my top 10. Probably the best solo single he's released since either Blueprint or Blueprint 2 (depending on how much you like "La La La"), but that's not saying much.

some dude, Thursday, 7 August 2008 12:39 (seventeen years ago)

i don't mind '99 problems', not hating on it, but if you think it's better than [insert at least 10 other jay-z singles here] you are completely insane and wrong

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:17 (seventeen years ago)

What's the most underrated track in this list? "Hovi Baby" maybe?

Tim F, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:21 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, but that's kind of a given, since it was just a 'buzz single' that didn't have a video, unlike most of the others.

some dude, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:27 (seventeen years ago)

Real most underrated would have to be some pre-Hard Knock track besides "Ain't No," probably "Who You Wit," which was great and probably the first Jay-Z track I was really into (technically "Who You Wit II" is on this list, but it was the first version that was a single).

some dude, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:30 (seventeen years ago)

"Who You Wit" was the first Jay-Z song I heard.

The Reverend, Thursday, 7 August 2008 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

the first i heard was 'hard knock life' and it put me off jay-z for AGES. i still hate it

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 August 2008 19:15 (seventeen years ago)

these vol 1 vids are dope

-- deej, Thursday, 7 August 2008 19:51 (6 days ago) Link

i'd agree on the blueprint side but reasonable doubt is classic as hell, is it corny to think that's a great album now? did i miss a memo?

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

I think it's more just the way those 2 albums both tower over his others in the esteem of a lot of magazine editors and other types of herbs that's problematic, they're both good records.

some dude, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

before Kingdom Come it felt like some kind of weird "all albums with numbers and/or colons in their names must be bad, it's the ones with simple straightforward 'classic album title'-type names that are great" philosophy going on.

some dude, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

Did peoples stop reading after Excuse Me Miss? Where's the love for Blue Magic?
I think it's more just the way those 2 albums both tower over his others in the esteem of a lot of magazine editors and other types of herbs that's problematic, they're both good records
OTM

VeronaInTheClub, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i could see that i guess.

i don't listen to blueprint much anymore but i love RD so much, i love how his style was back then when he was faster and more jaz-o influenced.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 20:28 (seventeen years ago)

i think vol. 1 does a better job of that even

deej, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

to be honest i haven't listened to vol on in a super long time.

i also really like his vol 2/3-ish midperiod style before he got all slowed down with blueprint

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 20:52 (seventeen years ago)

we should have a rank Jay-Z's albums threads and get the challllops out of the way

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 21:41 (seventeen years ago)

most ppl ranked his albums on the "jigga albums poll" thread

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 August 2008 21:43 (seventeen years ago)

albums polls like that aren't really about ranking all of an artist's albums from best to worst, though, just what people think is the one best.

some dude, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

i can't find these rankings
