I was watching Casablanca last night and really loving some of the medleys (particularly the Ilsa Returns, As Time Goes By medley) and wondering what other contemporaneous instrumental jazz is worth looking up? Is there anything equally as moody? (I'm not actually sure whether this counts as Jazz - but whatever it is...) Any things I should search?

Just check out any of the numerous Woody Allen soundtracks. He has a jazz goldmine in many of those... I recall him using 'as time goes by' even on one of them, that movie where he obsesses about Casablanca... too lazy to research.

Most of that stuff is 1950 onward, but really wonderful melancholy moody style stuff.

Some Ellington may be the thing here. Listen to sound samples from the Blanton/Webster stuff (under another title now, I think) and pick and choose.

Ellington tracks like "Solitude" and "Mood Indigo"Armstrong's version of "Stardust"Django Reinhardt, maybe

Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grappelly/Quintet of the Hot Club of France tends to be very bright and upbeat.
Ellington's 1957 Indigos album is damned moody, but yeah, 50s.
It's the 30s/40s thing that makes this thread difficult, especially when the example given is a Max Steiner movie score.
Maybe just getting some Georges Auric scores would be best...?

yeah, i agree with the ellington recommendations -- there is some really haunting stuff in between the bouncier things. in addition to "solitude" and "mood indigo" seek out "dusk" (on the Blanton Webster comp). it's a slow, moody piece that's barely there, but it might be just the ticket. you could also check out the early Monk blue note recordings (late 40s I think). original version of "Round Midnight" is the definition of "moody", though it might be a little sprightlier than it would become in later years.
