So much goodness.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 6 November 2008 03:36 (seventeen years ago)

I'm having a hard time choosing myself. If anything my complaint is with the Congos song selection, 'Children Crying', 'Fisherman', 'Open up the Gate' or 'Ark of the Covenant' are imho the best ones on the album and they're criminally ignored in here.

Moka, Thursday, 6 November 2008 03:42 (seventeen years ago)

Splitting it up on 3 polls instead of one would have been a probably wiser idea.

Moka, Thursday, 6 November 2008 03:44 (seventeen years ago)

Heptones are even poorer represented.

I love "Don't Blame It On I", but it would perverse to pick it.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 6 November 2008 03:47 (seventeen years ago)

whoaaaa... this is going to be tricky

sam500, Thursday, 6 November 2008 04:16 (seventeen years ago)

Upsetters - Party Time (Part 2)

ablaeser, Thursday, 6 November 2008 04:54 (seventeen years ago)

this is one of my favourite comps ever

t_g, Thursday, 6 November 2008 09:01 (seventeen years ago)

My guess is that Chase the Devil or Police and Thieves will win.

I vote John Public, though. My ex-band used to do that.

Jamie T Smith, Thursday, 6 November 2008 11:48 (seventeen years ago)

This is impossible and 50-option polls are dumbass. That said I voted "Groovy Situation" just for the heck of it.

Good Luck Usa! (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 6 November 2008 12:04 (seventeen years ago)

It's a bit slippery up there, goodness!

Mark G, Thursday, 6 November 2008 12:10 (seventeen years ago)

"Roast Fish and Cornbread" is the most-wide open, desolate dub I've ever heard. Plus, it's about food.

bendy, Thursday, 6 November 2008 12:15 (seventeen years ago)

The full length version of 'Roots Train' is one of the greatest things in modern music.

stroker ace, Thursday, 6 November 2008 12:20 (seventeen years ago)

Ditto 70-odd percent of this comp.

Good Luck Usa! (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 6 November 2008 12:21 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, this in one of my desert island discs.

bendy, Thursday, 6 November 2008 13:00 (seventeen years ago)

Toss up for me between Devon Irons - Vampire and Errol Walker - In These Times ... Vampire gets my vote because of the sublime connection to Walker is just too big of a turn off.

Kublakhan61, Thursday, 6 November 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

"In These Times", for me. Only ...which versh was it that I liked, like, ANAWFULLOT? (The other one I liked just LOTS)

t**t, Thursday, 6 November 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

i don't have this comp.

eman, Thursday, 6 November 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

I don't have it either.
:(
Used to have it taped on cassettes, years ago. But no' mo'.

t**t, Thursday, 6 November 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

Vampire is my choice although One Step Forward is also at the top of my list. a bit of a standard choice but i love it. the long version of Vampire called Ketch Vampire with Dr. Alimantado is pretty good too.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 6 November 2008 21:49 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for Vibrate On, though it was as others have said a tough decision.

Slightly off topic, but my favourite Perry-produced track is Croaking Lizard by Prince Jazzbo, which uses the Chase The Devil rhythm. That for me has all the Perry elements I love, in the right measure.

Daniel Giraffe, Thursday, 6 November 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

As great as this comp is I actually might like Open The Gate & Build The Ark a touch more. I still can't decide what to vote on.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 6 November 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

i bought this and then forgot i bought it and i don't think i've ever listened to it all the way through

metametadata (n/a), Thursday, 6 November 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

Pottie Skippen (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 6 November 2008 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

Too much repetition on this comp.

Bob Six, Thursday, 6 November 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

yeah the 80 versions of the Police n Thieves riddim is a bit much IMO

Pottie Skippen (Granny Dainger), Friday, 7 November 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago)

I'd agree re. repition issues. But there's some lovely stuff on here.

Unfortunately my copy is on the other side of the world and struggling to recall much of this.

sam500, Friday, 7 November 2008 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

Hating repetition in Jamaican music seems perverse to me somehow. The second disc (the Police & Thieves one) is probably my favorite.

Alex in SF, Friday, 7 November 2008 01:03 (seventeen years ago)

Hating repetition in Jamaican music seems perverse to me somehow.

otm. I actually never listened to the whole comp straight, I like sprinkling reggae/dub/roots with different genres otherwise I find myself feeling wearisome after the first couple of songs.

Moka, Friday, 7 November 2008 05:45 (seventeen years ago)

Didn't say I hated repetition in Jamaican music, or elsewhere for that matter (e.g. Terry Riley, Philip Glass) - because I don't.

But I find this comp a bit uninspired in the sequencing and choice of tracks.

Bob Six, Friday, 7 November 2008 08:04 (seventeen years ago)

i voted for "mr president" but there really is a lot fo good stuff here.

the next grozart, Friday, 7 November 2008 10:34 (seventeen years ago)

i love those 8 or whatever versions of police and thieves!

t_g, Friday, 7 November 2008 10:43 (seventeen years ago)

they're all good by themselves, but i can't handle them all in a row.

Granny Dainger, Friday, 7 November 2008 11:10 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 10 November 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Haven't heard all of these. One Step Forward is one of my all time reggae faves, so voted for that.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

Who else voted Roast Fish? I WUV YOU.

bendy, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 01:59 (seventeen years ago)

count me a belated "war inna babylon" vote

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:01 (seventeen years ago)

That version of "Roast Fish" isn't as good as the album version IIRC.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:07 (seventeen years ago)

wow I can't even imagine what a BETTER version would be like!

sleeve, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 05:54 (seventeen years ago)

george faith’ to be a lover is one of the more immaculately recorded albums in the history of sound

grove street (party) direction (voodoo chili), Monday, 27 September 2021 23:36 (four years ago)

Bird In Hand - devotional and mysterious even after it turned out to be an inspired cover version.

mantovani featuring man parrish (Noel Emits), Tuesday, 28 September 2021 12:28 (four years ago)

A cover version?

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Tuesday, 28 September 2021 20:48 (four years ago)

Oh wow... just googled..
Always wondered about this song because it really does sound remarkable even for Scratch. Now I know

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Tuesday, 28 September 2021 20:50 (four years ago)

There is so much to love on this comp

Noel Ellis - Reach My Destiny

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 28 September 2021 20:53 (four years ago)

thanks granny, that sounds great. seems like a middle ground between the george faith album and the dubbier side of max romeo

grove street (party) direction (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 28 September 2021 21:10 (four years ago)

Yep. There's a few tracks similar to it on that comp, now that I'm listening to it. "Dreadlocks Lady" by Jerry Brown esp.
