Torn between Act Naturally and Together Again, but the fuzz guitar on Who's Gonna Mow Your Lawn is pretty incredible.

Brio, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

Yes. I like the psychedelic Buck of Mow.

i guess "Made in Japan" is kind of o_O these days, but it's a pretty great song, and "Act Naturally" is about as classic as classic gets

I might go for "Together Again" for sheer timeless tipsy mumble-along classicness, but my mind keeps coming back to "Buckaroo," which is maybe technically more of a Don Rich #1.

― Brio,

Couldn't agree more, this gets my vote. It's not even that out of place from the lead guitar style on his other hits. Was he seen as "too rock" by country purists at the time? Was he trying to appeal to rock kids? Because the rockness of these songs made them a very easy sell to me when I was first getting into country.

yeah his early stuff can be pretty pricey. But its great! I'd recommend finding stuff through an online retailer - in my experience anything that makes it into stores gets way marked up

I heard a bunch of Buck Owens growing up around the house. I've loved the song "Sam's Place" since I was like five, so I will go with that one. When I was a little kid I loved all of those country songs that were really clever in the lyrics describing a place or telling a story. Hearing those tunes as a kid, they stuck with me.

eight years pass...

The terrific two-parter Cocaine & Rhinestones episode on Buck Owens and Don Rich sent me down into a deep listen of the '57-'69 era.

I was 3 years old in 1969 and relied on television to raise me rather than my parents. As dumb as Hee Haw could be, the Laugh-In + Country Music formula was perfect for three year olds and I remember Buck's big goofy face and his Telecaster. When I was nine in 1974, my mom took me up to Sun Valley, Idaho for a week to go skiing. At dinner one night my mom pointed out that Buck Owens was sitting over at another table and that I should get his autograph. I was a super shy kid, but I managed to walk over to the table where was Buck was sitting - there were a half dozen or so men and women with him - introduced myself and Buck just instantly became the Buck Owens on TV. A pen appeared somewhere, he signed a napkin in a big "Hello Chris! Buck Owens" script like he was drawing a show poster, and shook my hand. His ski sweater was just as eye-croggling as some of the Buckaroos suits could be.

Anyway, '57-'69 is some of the greatest music ever put to tape. I think if I ever did get a time machine, I'd cap off whatever trouble I got myself into by going to the Blackboard in Bakersfield on one of those nights when Buck and crew were the Tulare Ramones.
