Songs with two drummers

Not like one guy on a normal kit and one on bongos or percussion, but two full drum kits, both going a bit batty. Doesn't matter if it's one drummer playing two overdubs or whatever rather than two actual drummers, as long as it SOUNDS like two kits - i.e. is mixed so you hear it that way, rather than as a wall of percussion.

Gotta be loads more, surely?

La Dusseldorf <------ band consisting of three drummers!

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Thursday, 23 April 2009 14:33 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I'm after two distinct kits playing the same or very similar patterns. Also after specific songs by artists with usually only one drummer rather than bands with 2+ drummers / percussionists.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 23 April 2009 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

lots of jazz stuff, like that coltrane album w/both elvin jones & rashid ali, kenvandermarks sax/drums/drums trio, etc.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Thursday, 23 April 2009 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

wasn't there a lame hardcore band trend to have two drummers for awhile?

Yeah, I'm after two distinct kits playing the same or very similar patterns

this really annoys me most of the time

Tons of post '74 Grateful Dead stuff with both Mickey Hart and Kreutzmann on drums.

Also pre-72 or whenever Hart left the first time.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 23 April 2009 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, thats true, he left somewhere in '71 I believe. Honestly it isn't til the late 70s/early 80s that I really began to pay attention to the two drummers. I think esp the Pigpen era had me focused on other stuff.

moe greene dolphin street (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 23 April 2009 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

After Hart came back, he focused more on unorthodox percussion type stuff while Bill was the traditional timekeeper. You can really hear the delineation between the two on some of the better late 70s shows, Cornell '77 being the obvious choice.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 23 April 2009 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

Keith Moon overdubbed himself (full kit both times) on "I Can See For Miles." It's more obvious on the stereo mix -- one Moon in each speaker -- but the effect is heightened on the mono mix.

Also, Charlie Watts overdubbed himself on "Tumbling Dice."

Man, I fucking LOVE twin drums, one for each side of your head - there are times when I wish every band employed 'em. Here's a quick POX as yet unmentioned:

Pink Fairies, Never Never Land
MX-80 Sound, Hard Attack
Pere Ubu, The Tenement Year
Sonny Sharrock, Seize The Rainbow
Captain Beefheart, Lick My Decals Off, Baby
James Blood Ulmer, Are You Glad To Be In America?
Charlie Daniels Band, Honey In The Rock
Hawkwind, Warrior On The Edge of Time
Butthole Surfers, Hairway To Steven
Amon Duul II, Phallus Dei

when i saw modest mouse live, they had two drummers. i'm not a big fan though, so i couldn't tell you if they had two kits going in their recordings or not.

borntohula, Thursday, 23 April 2009 18:51 (seventeen years ago)

on this subject jazz is kind of cheating though.

xp Jordan: What about it annoys you?

it usually comes across as unnecessary and gimmicky, like if it's just two drummers playing the same rock beat. there's so much potential there, why not take the time to work out some complimentary parts. also i really like music that has the rhythm parts divided up among different drummers, like salsa, samba, new orleans brass band, west african drumming, etc.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Thursday, 23 April 2009 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

I think there's a Jim O'Rourke song like this on Insignificance -- I forget the name, but it's the one with the AC/DC-like beat.

eggy mule (Hurting 2), Thursday, 23 April 2009 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

Oh yeah, also ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, but I wouldn't really consider that a good answer.

homage is parody gone sour (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 23 April 2009 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

xp Jordan: I asked because this is generally what annoys me about it (excluding orchestral or marching band type music). There are certain exceptions - such as if the band is so loud only one drummer would sound wimpy.

Every single track on "Union" by Yes.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 23 April 2009 21:34 (seventeen years ago)

Do songs with numerous drummers count? In which case, "The Obvious Child" by Paul Simon.

Ha, 'Epic Problem' was what I first thought of when I saw the thread title.

Jeez Geir, you've gone and picked a good one (Paul Simon that is, not Yes)

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 23 April 2009 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

not a good one if one reads the first post in this thread which stipulates two drum kits.

not really, that paul simon is samba school stuff, not drum kit. i could recommend tons of roots/"world"/etc. stuff with many drummers.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Thursday, 23 April 2009 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

'tis done well, all the same

i always thought it was cool/funny that the latter-day american spacemen 3 type band The Warlocks has two drummers. cuz their name is the warlocks. ...and the grateful dead used to be the warlocks.

one of my fave psych bands clear light had two drummers. one of them was dallas taylor.

i've said it before and i'll say it again, one of my top ten singles of the 90's was this:

This applies to most of Seconds Out, except that it's sometimes Bill Bruford on the second kit. And it's not wank.

nb: when I say "this applies", I mean the thread title applies, not the bit about playing on stools.

iirc there are some tracks on Fleetwood Mac's Tusk where you can hear 2 drum kits slightly out of sync.
It's a nice trick !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 14:39 (eight years ago)

I think one of those drummers may be Lindsey. He hits a chair or two on Rumours, too, I want to say.

Most recent King Crimson lineup had 4 drummers, iirc.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 15:19 (eight years ago)

sounds to me that Hounds of Love (the song) either features two drummers playing the same beat or just massively double-tracked drums

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 15:55 (eight years ago)

it might be the Phil Collins trick of close miking the drums but mixing it along with a huge room sound. So it sounds like two drummers.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 15:57 (eight years ago)

Astonished that nobody mentioned the double-drummer lineup (aka the BEST lineup) of the Melvins. I got to see them twice in this incarnation, once with Down and once at Isis's final NYC show, and they were amazing both times.

Every New Orleans brass band recording (split up between bass & snare drum).

Lots of jazz records (from Rich/Roach type drum battles to late-period Coltrane and free jazz drum duets).

Two full drumkits on a stereo recording is normally not a great sound imo (esp. two kick drums).
