'I Want You', for the bass

mark cl, Thursday, 23 April 2009 19:52 (seventeen years ago)

actually i love this tune but mainly for 'i want you'

mark cl, Thursday, 23 April 2009 19:52 (seventeen years ago)

also love the guitar solo over the bass which is done w/ the 'iwu' melody

mark cl, Thursday, 23 April 2009 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

Today, I'd say "I Want You", but is there an earlier example of white noise overtaking a song to the extent that it does in "She's So Heavy"?, at least in the context of a pop record? At the time I imagine it must have shocked the hotboxers.

"buttz" (Z S), Thursday, 23 April 2009 19:56 (seventeen years ago)

Although I admit it's not too hard to shock the hotboxers.

INSEPARABLE AND INCOMPARABLE

Genghis Khan and his brother Don (G00blar), Thursday, 23 April 2009 20:25 (seventeen years ago)

"Which do you prefer, this one song or its fade-out?"

Genghis Khan and his brother Don (G00blar), Thursday, 23 April 2009 20:25 (seventeen years ago)

What fade-out?

ooh good point

Genghis Khan and his brother Don (G00blar), Thursday, 23 April 2009 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

"outro"

Genghis Khan and his brother Don (G00blar), Thursday, 23 April 2009 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

makes me think of that beavis and butthead discussion of nirvana. "without the bit that sucks the cool bit wouldn't sound as cool."

Dr X O'Skeleton, Thursday, 23 April 2009 21:29 (seventeen years ago)

Seriously, the "I Want You" section, people? Seriously? I mean, I like it, too -- but that guitar arpeggio set the stage for, like, three decades of pop songs.

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 23 April 2009 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

agree ^^^^^^

tylerw, Thursday, 23 April 2009 21:55 (seventeen years ago)

yes it's a good song all the way, but still:
'I Want You', for the bass

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 23 April 2009 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

she's so heavy for the chord progression and guitar line. I'm thinking "I Want You" would have been a B-side at best w/out the she's so heavy part (while the she's so heavy part would at least have gotten into the second side suite on its own)

Dominique, Thursday, 23 April 2009 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

heavy all the way.
i want you - too bluesy to me

Zeno, Thursday, 23 April 2009 22:29 (seventeen years ago)

"She's so Heavy", for the bass. Seriously. Those runs McCartney plays are fucking nuts.

Darin, Thursday, 23 April 2009 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

cordially invite the "i want you" voters to come the fuck on

although the BRIDGE between "i want you" and "she's so heavy" with those dissonant chords is fkn neat, and i guess belongs to "i want you" so fair play *mumbles*

but seriously. seriously.

above three posts sum it up

Doctor Casino, Friday, 24 April 2009 06:01 (seventeen years ago)

i voted "i want you" if only for the way the chords move underneath "i want you so bad it's driving me mad it's driving me mad." the vocal in "heavy" is kind of obnoxious. (which is part of the appeal, sure, but it doesn't do much for me.)

bug, Friday, 24 April 2009 06:41 (seventeen years ago)

"I want you" is quite jazzy in places, which is a rarity for the beatles.

Still, "She's so.."(not long enough!)

Mark G, Friday, 24 April 2009 07:11 (seventeen years ago)

She's So Heavy by a distance!

Chris in Belfast, Friday, 24 April 2009 09:55 (seventeen years ago)

I'm firmly in the "I Want You? Huh?" camp. Sludge rock outro, dudes! By the Beatles!

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 24 April 2009 11:36 (seventeen years ago)

i like the IWU grooves

mark cl, Friday, 24 April 2009 13:36 (seventeen years ago)

She's So Heavy is more goth, so...

I agree with Zeno that IWU is a little too bluesy for me. Which is funny because I adore "Yer Blues" by them! Go figure...

Earl of Gothington Manor (Bimble), Friday, 24 April 2009 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know what this version is, but I'd guess it must be a run-through just before the final take because the structure is almost there but Paul hasn't fully worked out the bassline yet. I always enjoy even rough tapes of them playing as a band, especially when you can hear Ringo properly.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 25 April 2009 08:42 (seventeen years ago)

Good version - comes with artwork as well !

Bob Six, Saturday, 25 April 2009 08:50 (seventeen years ago)

Have I mentioned lately how much I <3 <3 <3 the internet?

Earl of Gothington Manor (Bimble), Saturday, 25 April 2009 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

So it does xp! I remember where I found it now - note that the following track is the supposedly-legendary 19-minute 'Think for Yourself' rehearsal

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 25 April 2009 09:50 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Wednesday, 29 April 2009 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

thankfully the "i want you" voters pretty much all felt the need to justify their vote with a post or two, whereas the rest of us just got on with it and exercised common sense

sorry for british (country matters), Wednesday, 29 April 2009 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

i voted "she's so heavy" but am reconsidering now. no good reason why, today the beginning part tickles my fancy more.

pipecock, Wednesday, 29 April 2009 23:28 (seventeen years ago)

wow! this is surprising

macaulay culkin's bukkake shocker (bug), Thursday, 30 April 2009 00:11 (seventeen years ago)

What's surprising is that so many people posted in favor of "I Want You."

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 30 April 2009 02:23 (seventeen years ago)

What, no bridge section? That part with the organ stabs and John's "Yeeeeeeaaaaahhhh" is tops!

Adam Bruneau, Thursday, 30 April 2009 02:36 (seventeen years ago)

"I Want You/She's So Heavy/Yeeeeeeaaaaahhhh"

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 30 April 2009 02:51 (seventeen years ago)

Paul hasn't fully worked out the bassline yet.

In most cases bass overdubs were the last thing to be added.. so that he was able to throw in all those crazy fills.

billstevejim, Thursday, 30 April 2009 15:21 (seventeen years ago)

Those fills are amazing. Some of the coolest and most experimental Beatles bass parts are in this song, especially near the end where he's just doing crazy scales up and down. Goes perfect with the white noise.

Shit like this makes you wish they hadn't broken up.

Adam Bruneau, Thursday, 30 April 2009 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, no kidding -- this song in particular doesn't sound like a "Lennon track" or "McCartney track" ... One of the main complaints about post-Peppers Beatles is that they all essentially became solo acts and backed each other up (debatable), but this one is just a really creative, awesome song with no real "leader" or focal point.

tylerw, Thursday, 30 April 2009 18:16 (seventeen years ago)

It's always up the top of worst-beatles-track-ever lists (after Revolution 9, naturally)
