listening to dimension hatross tonight, i thought about other bands who could possibly scratch that voivod itch. i've always felt that die kreuzen were spiritual brothers in arms with voivod, even though they come from different worlds. october file would thrill most voivod fans, i'll bet. treponem pal always gave me a hint of voivod. and maybe no more color-era coroner.
my big discovery of the last year or so was the reissue of french canuck progthrash band Obliveon's albums. i'd NEVER listened to them before 2008. I LOVE their stuff. Their album From This Day Forward is awesome weird twisted off-kilter thrash a la Voivod and almost as entertaining. Obliveon were around in the 80's and 90's and I can't believe i missed them!
anyway, if someone came up to you and told you that they LOVE Voivod and they wanted more like it, where would you send them?
(just thinking that french-wise, that Morsure reissue muight fit the bill too. Gottpunch can agree or disagree about that . i know he heard it and liked it.)
i also think the completely bonkers (and my heroes) last crack fit somewhere as well. as far as 80's bands go. Last Crack should have been huge, but so should have Voivod.
jawdropping Roadrunner Last Crack promo video right here:

I checked out some of Last Crack's music on YouTube. I had never heard of them before and they had an interesting sound. Being that they were from Madison/Milwaukee, I wonder how different the crowd that followed them compared to Die Kreuzen/Killdozer. Different haircuts sure, but there had to be quite a bit of spill over between the audiences.

i can't think of anyone who matches Voivod in their prime. they were nuts. 'Sui Generis'. I hope, though, to learn of others who were as great, through this thread! but not holding out hope. it's really all about Piggy and his fucking insane approach to metal guitar. that dude was a hero
― Stormy Davis, Friday, 24 April 2009 04:57 (seventeen years ago)
i just rewatched the DVD a couple months ago and was blown away again
― Stormy Davis, Friday, 24 April 2009 04:58 (seventeen years ago)
Gottpunch can agree or disagree about that . i know he heard it and liked it.
i'd agree, the two things i always think of when listening to that are voivod and metal urbain (mainly for the drum machine).
also
YOUNG GODS - TV SKY
works well with the "nothingface"-"outer limits" stuff. i'm going to have to think about stuff that sounds as excellent as the thrash stuff though.
― GÖTT DAT SCHING (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 24 April 2009 08:20 (seventeen years ago)
When I saw the Young Gods in the 80s, those guys had Voivod stickers plastered all over their kit.
― Enemy Insects (NickB), Friday, 24 April 2009 08:36 (seventeen years ago)
I always thought Blind Idiot God had similarities, albeit purely instrumental. Here's some guy who's put their songs on youtube accompanied by pics of naked models for some reason :

If you need to scratch the Voivod itch, try more Voivod. Few folks have all their material, and it's all worthwhile. Phobos is a particularly unsung masterpiece.
Not the same but I've always felt that Morgoth Odium has something to offer the Voivod fan.
Also depends on what era of Voivod you're looking to simulate...

Another record I used to jam alongside Killing Technology is RKL's Rock & Roll Nightmare. Very creative bombastic thrash, though with an entirely different theme and storyline...

Obliveon are/were seriously cool. and i had never heard them until a year or two ago! i can listen to their albums over and over again.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:11 (sixteen years ago)
Nobody mentioned Anacrusis yet?
Still wondering whether Mekong Delta might make sense here too (Martin Popoff seems to think they do, but I've never actually heard them.)
And yeah, Die Kreuzen and Treponem Pal make sense.
And Fentanyl. And Rudimentary Peni. And some other bands I can't think of right this second, but I will sometime, I'm sure. (Of course, it all depends which era of Voivod you're talking about, too.)
― xhuxk, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)
Voivod give a nod (sorry) to Die Kreuzen in the credits for one of their records (or it might be the other way round: those two bands knew each others' stuff). In an entirely different realm, I always thought Drive Like Jehu had some of the same digressive power and prowess as Voivod in their music, although the bands sound nothing alike. Ditto on Piggy being a complete innovator on guitar...

OMG in the summer of 97, I made a C90 with Obliveon's Nemesis on one side and Joy Division's Closer on the other. I listened to it all the time. I kind of forgot about Obliveon until now. Thx!
Blind Idiot God = crazy great. I can't believe I never heard them until this year. Will listen to every band mentioned on this thread. Hm, I had a friend who loved Rudimentary Peni. I never liked them as much as Crass but maybe I should reconsider.

the young gods sampled Voivod
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 26 August 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)
Now I'm kind of feeling like I should go back and listen to Swans and Neubauten again but maybe that's just nostalgia.
xpost On which album? I have TV Sky.

funnily enough one of my fave young gods songs and the highlight of seeing them live in 1995

Yeah, that's one of their best songs. That and 'Envoye', which has got a pretty funny video...

I used to think Noir Desir and Pankow both sounded kind of like Young Gods, though saying they sound like Voivod may or may not be more of a stretch.
I'd recommend Bloodstar to Voivod fans for sure, though.
Used to also think that "$0.36" off the first Killing Joke album prefigured Voivod's sound, somehow. (Pretty sure Voivod were fans of them, and of Rudimentary Peni. Maybe Amebix, too? And I bet there are MX-80 Sound guitar parts that Piggy would have appreciated in his time. Also think the Voivod guys used to say there were inspired oddball obscure '70s prog bands like Egg and Birth Control; not sure if there's a sonic similarity or not. And what about Guru Guru? And Chrome, for that matter? They belong here for sure, right?)
Also, Away's side project band Kosmos (whose album a couple years ago was really good.)
The album I heard by the Norwegian band Khold reminded me of Voivod a couple years ago too, for some reason, but maybe I was just hearing things.

Was a pretty vocal supporter of both Voivod and Blind Idiot God circa 1987/88, btw -- wrote about them both quite a bit -- and gotta say I never noted a connection between the two bands. Though I did make connections between both of them and Celtic Frost -- Blind Idiot God for their use of dub (a la CF on Into The Pandemonium) and Voivod (circa Rrroooaaarrr because both they and CF sounded way weirder and and chunkier than mere thrash/speed-metal to me at the time -- I called them both "nuke rock" (may also have briefly tossed Carnivore and the metal band called Primal Scream into that imaginary genre, too, though maybe not accurately.)
― xhuxk, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 23:11 (sixteen years ago)
chuck, you should really check out some of the Obliveon stuff. it's really good. they reissued all of it a year or two ago.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 23:16 (sixteen years ago)
or maybe not all of it. but a lot of it.

anyone remember DBC - Universe? straight-up Voivod cybermetal from Montreal.
― herb albert, Thursday, 27 August 2009 14:09 (sixteen years ago)
I will check out Oliveon, Scott, I promise! And now DBC, too, I guess...
― xhuxk, Thursday, 27 August 2009 14:39 (sixteen years ago)
If you can handle the heavy stuff, I think Immolation Closer to a World Below is like a death metal Voivod.
I also caught Mick Barr lifting a riff from Dimension Hatross on an Orthrelm album. He said no one had ever spotted it before.
I have that DBC record. Looks like I need to experience Obliveon and Blind Idiot God though.
― Nate Carson, Friday, 28 August 2009 20:04 (sixteen years ago)
Also have to add, it was mutual Voivod love that brought me and xhuxk together in the first place. :)
good stocking stuffer for the voivod fan in your life:

As a metal fan into "Nothingface", discovering mid-80s Rush and Killing Joke really made me connect the dots (albeit 15+ years late).
Supuration from France (now S.U.P.) were a cool Voivod-influenced death metal band. Their '93 album "The Cube" is great, a minor classic in the genre.

I've never heard any direct quotes from prog rock in Voivod's original songs; but listening today, the riff at 4.00 into "Chaosmongers" immediately reminded me of the bit at 9.30 in "The Gates of Delirium" by Yes. Something about the chromatic minor chords played on the top strings and the insistent rhythm. I'm still yet to discover the homage to Gentle Giant that Piggy put into one of their earlier songs, though.
