It's a POLL, POLL world...but it wouldn't mean a thing without a POLL

Disruptor of Morals (Bimble), Saturday, 25 April 2009 13:18 (seventeen years ago)

Should have been titled "Poll Many Polls on ILP"

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Thursday, 30 April 2009 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I don't mind some of the polls, but when over 50% of the board is polls day after fucking day.... some smart ass will slap me down for daring to complain but really, fuck ILM if nobody else sees a little problem with that.

fandango, Thursday, 30 April 2009 23:31 (seventeen years ago)

you can hide them.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Thursday, 30 April 2009 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

Also, polls aren't just polls: a lot of the time they're a useful springboard for discussion. Before polls were implemented, someone would start a thread called "What's the best Roxy Music album?" and people would offer their opinions and argue. Now, someone starts a thread called "POLL: Best Roxy Music album" and people click a little circle before offering their opinions and arguing.

When the system bumped this result, the thread "Are there many musicians that make instrument noises with their mouths?" was forced off the main ILM page.

james k polk, Thursday, 30 April 2009 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

apologies, I don't spend every waking minute here. I honestly didn't know there was an option to hide polls now. Thank you, and THANK FUCK for that.

cheers!

Jaymc is otm, and has neatly outlined the reasons why I have made total peace with polls. Most of them, anyway.

sorry for british (country matters), Thursday, 30 April 2009 23:46 (seventeen years ago)

jaymc otm indeed

jaymc is kind of stating the obvious, my argument would be that the type of discussions poll threads provoke were here before (which was fine), but not in such a massive amount, and not to the point where they drowned out more interesting threads. Half the time these things only have 7 fucking votes (people that care) anyway and the opinions go round and round, and are completely banal. I guess I have to log in to lurk now. Move them to a separate board ffs (imo).

I'm pissing in the wind here though clearly. I have mostly contempt for the board these days.

fandango, Friday, 1 May 2009 06:42 (seventeen years ago)

Congrats for that.

i used to find polls a drag but now i look forward to the results

i think ilm has adapted them to its own strange little way

private static void (electricsound), Friday, 1 May 2009 07:19 (seventeen years ago)

As Jaymc said.

Of course you get meaningless polls about even years vs. odd years and so on too, but the majority of the polls make for some interesting discussions, at least among some if not neccessarily among all.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 1 May 2009 07:36 (seventeen years ago)

An argument could be made that both ILE and ILM have been dominated today by threads about how ILE and ILM work or fail to work.

anyway, I've bumped three poll threads in a row.
