"Lizstomania"

Alex in NYC, Monday, 27 April 2009 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

this is super tough - everything from "too young" on is classic w/ the exception of "run run run" imo

right now i'm leaning towards either "if i ever feel better" or "consolation prizes"

GOON carter cash (J0rdan S.), Monday, 27 April 2009 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

i think their dentist office soundtrack days produced better singles but their showered strokes ones produced better albums

is that the consensus?

hardest poll ever.

"run run run" was a single?

billstevejim, Saturday, 2 May 2009 03:29 (seventeen years ago)

too young or if i ever feel better, and sometimes that's still my favourite album of theirs

surprised 'too young' didn't do better

didn't see this poll, woulda voted Too Young, assumed Rally had been a single.

sad i didnt vote for too young

just sayin, Saturday, 2 May 2009 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

i dont think lizstomania is this good - after some consideration my top two would be "if i ever feel better" and "long distance call" for the line "a messed up kid with no ideas at all"

best singles rock band of the decade

J0rdan S., Saturday, 8 May 2010 08:23 (sixteen years ago)

LOL it's Lisztomania

Liz Stomania (Paul in Santa Cruz), Saturday, 8 May 2010 17:24 (sixteen years ago)

if i ever feel better > too young >>> the rest. i'm boring and nostalgic. liked em better w/smooth rock production rather than 00s bright and chipper. as it stands, though, i have a copy of wolfgang amadeus that i will never sell (as it was a gift) so i'll be trying out nu-phoenix again periodically.

hobbes, Saturday, 8 May 2010 23:58 (sixteen years ago)

"you can blame it on anybody" is a jam. maybe i should buy everything is everything again. i liked it at the time. more consistant than united but nothing to match its highs.

zoot woman remix of "too young" is REALLY a jam. highly recommended to phoenix fans (it's not a DANCE remix, it's just another smooth french pop band covering it w/the original vocals.. sweet rhodes action)

Currently making myself a Phoenix compilation. They're one of those bands that I don't want to fill a CD-R - would rather keep it zippy. But what am I missing?

Everything is Everything
Too Young

voodoo chili, Thursday, 28 May 2020 13:19 (six years ago)

"J-Boy" is one of their best singles and Ti Amo has a few other gems like "Lovelife" and "Fior Di Latte". WAP is great from start-to-finish (my weird opinion is "1901" might be the weakest track on it) but my favourites are probably "Rome" and "Girlfriend". "Consolation Prizes" is probably the highlight from It's Never Been Like That.

ufo, Thursday, 28 May 2020 13:25 (six years ago)

Drakkar Noir

calstars, Thursday, 28 May 2020 13:33 (six years ago)

Rally

groovypanda, Thursday, 28 May 2020 13:46 (six years ago)

Can't really argue with any of the suggestions so far. I'd add these

Trying To Be Cool
Courtesy Laughs
Countdown
Summer Days
Ti Amo

kitchen person, Thursday, 28 May 2020 14:02 (six years ago)

'Love like a Sunset' is a great deep cut and would change the flow of the mix too

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 28 May 2020 14:12 (six years ago)

i'll second consolation prizes, that's a good 'un

voodoo chili, Thursday, 28 May 2020 14:45 (six years ago)

Oh, thanks everybody!

I've got a good evening ahead of me now!

djh, Thursday, 28 May 2020 15:04 (six years ago)

Yeah, Rally is probably my favorite song of theirs.

Night of the Living Crustheads (PBKR), Thursday, 28 May 2020 22:10 (six years ago)

Consolation Prizes. But Rally is in a close second.

Cool. I'm kind of expecting this single to come with some kind of best of as it has been 20 years since United although I'd welcome a new album by them. Ti Amo is probably their weakest album, but I still liked it.

kitchen person, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 13:13 (five years ago)

I still haven’t listened to Ti Amo, did I miss much?

I can’t be bothered scrolling up to see if I mentioned it before, but always worth mentioning how great Funky Squaredance is.

caută tu singur (gyac), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 13:37 (five years ago)

Probably worth hearing J-Boy and Fleur De Lys

chonky floof (groovypanda), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 14:03 (five years ago)

yeah "j-boy" is one of their best singles. the album was pretty inconsistent but i think its best moments were better than anything on bankrupt

ufo, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 21:46 (five years ago)

Interesting, because I’ve listened to Chloroform and Trying To Be Cool about a million times, Entertainment is good too. I’ll listen tomorrow.

"identical" is great

ufo, Wednesday, 19 August 2020 20:57 (five years ago)

Heard it in the Coppola trailer first

― caută tu singur (gyac),

I still really rate Bankrupt. I never got why it had such a lukewarm response. They've never made anything approaching a bad record though.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 19 August 2020 22:23 (five years ago)

it was just underwhelming after how great WAP was, not as tightly constructed or hooky and its blown-out synth-oriented sound is strange. there's a few bits where songs go off in strange unexpected directions and that doesn't always work. "trying to be cool" and "drakkar noir" do rule though.

ufo, Wednesday, 19 August 2020 23:18 (five years ago)

Entertainment is my fav phoenix single

ciderpress, Thursday, 20 August 2020 00:04 (five years ago)

new song manages to be great and also annoying as fuck

Murgatroid, Thursday, 2 June 2022 05:07 (four years ago)

it's extremely forgettable and i liked the last album

ufo, Thursday, 2 June 2022 05:28 (four years ago)

The “hoo huu hallelujah” chorus is terrible. A shame because the rest of the song grooves fine.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 2 June 2022 05:56 (four years ago)

Entertainment is pretty great but I’m all about Too Young and If I Ever Feel Better til I die tbh

groovypanda, Wednesday, 7 September 2022 17:04 (three years ago)

Much better than the last single. The chorus is very Strokes.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 7 September 2022 18:41 (three years ago)

verse is awkward but the chorus & bridge are a solid return to the sound of WAP

glad "identical" is on the album at least, that's still great

ufo, Thursday, 8 September 2022 02:32 (three years ago)

one month passes...

New album is out today, man how this band has fallen. That comment is not on the new album, as I have yet to hear it, I'm taking just in general.

Bee OK, Friday, 4 November 2022 05:34 (three years ago)

new album is very forgettable. the previous one had its moments, this doesn't really

ufo, Friday, 4 November 2022 05:42 (three years ago)

There's some nice moments on this but definitely a few where they slip up. The title track is the first Phoenix song I've strongly disliked. The Only One is really pretty but is let down by such a weak chorus that sounds like they put it in as a placeholder that they were going to replace with a better one later on. Season 2 is missing a chorus too and wouldn't have even been considered for earlier albums.

Tonight, After Midnight, Winter Solstice and Identical are the keepers. I kind of wish they'd put a couple of those as the token new songs on a best of instead of stretching it out into a full album. A Phoenix compilation could be incredible.

kitchen person, Friday, 4 November 2022 13:48 (three years ago)

"identical" is good but that's it

ufo, Friday, 4 November 2022 13:57 (three years ago)

isn't "Identical" the track they did for that Sofia Coppola movie a few yrs back

Murgatroid, Friday, 4 November 2022 14:47 (three years ago)

yes, it's the closing track on this

ufo, Friday, 4 November 2022 14:49 (three years ago)

Nah, this is a goodie. Mar's singing abilities become more dexterous every album, and I'd say his being in the band is the group's greatest joy. The songs are just enjoyable, though Season 2 confounds me. That said, Artefact is abundantly a Strokes track, and The Only One reminds me a lot of mid-career Panda Bear. Otherwise have run through this maybe six times since release yesterday - rare album that is beginning to end fun to drive to.

kelpolaris, Saturday, 5 November 2022 17:13 (three years ago)

It doesn't look like they've ever released one, but there's never been a "greatest hits" or singles collection, has there? Feel like they ought to release one, even if it's an antiquated idea - would be a massive album in its own right.

birdistheword, Saturday, 5 November 2022 17:51 (three years ago)

Oh, I don't think I ever came back with my "best of" from a couple of years ago:

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3NoaF4sJZXRqCSWRCXOn9u

Feeling a bit "I didn't need to buy that" about the new one but that might change.

djh, Saturday, 5 November 2022 18:59 (three years ago)

This is how my best of Phoenix would look:

1. Too Young
2. If Ever I Feel Better
3. Summer Days
4. Everything Is Everything
5. Run Run Run
6. (You Can't Blame It On) Anybody
7. Long Distance Call
8. Consolation Prize
9. Rally
10. Courtesy Laughs
11. Lisztomania
12. 1901
13. Girlfriend
14. Countdown
15. Entertainment
16. Trying To Be Cool
17. Drakkar Noir
18. J-Boy
19. Ti Amo
20. Tonight
21. Identical

kitchen person, Saturday, 5 November 2022 20:21 (three years ago)

Oh man, how can "Rome" not be on these or I love that song and would be on mine.

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 November 2022 22:18 (three years ago)

The guys make enough hits that you really can't please everybody. Some of the albums are growers, too -- I dismissed Ti Amo outright for years. Listened to it recently. It's a good pop album. I think these guys are too suffused with wealth to really put out another Wolfgang Amadeus, but there isn't a pop-rock band out there that I have no doubts I will be listening to for as long as they choose to exist. Can't say the same for similar bands from the generation...Strokes, Spoon, and everyone else I stopped caring for.

kelpolaris, Saturday, 5 November 2022 23:35 (three years ago)

spoon are a weird comparison point as spoon are extremely consistent and never really fell off much, while phoenix's discography is one very good album and a whole lot more that are uneven at best

ufo, Saturday, 5 November 2022 23:39 (three years ago)

top 5 phoenix tracks:
too young
j-boy
lisztomania
rome
girlfriend

ufo, Saturday, 5 November 2022 23:48 (three years ago)

The latest two Phoenix albums aren't terrible but they are the first ones that don't seem essential to me. I still think Bankrupt is really underrated and love the first four. I play them all the time.

kitchen person, Sunday, 6 November 2022 00:11 (three years ago)

ufo is 100% correct. Spoon are a very good band even to this day. When I saw them in June the crowd was going mental, not something I see with mant bands these days.

Strokes are an interesting case because Countdown Machine or whatever it was called seemed to get some acclaimed praise. I haven't been in the mood to revisit for a very long time. Wish I did that over Arcade Fire after what has come to light.

Bee OK, Sunday, 6 November 2022 01:00 (three years ago)

Comedown Machine is fantastic and probably my second favourite album of theirs after Room On Fire. One day it's going to rediscovered as a lost classic.

kitchen person, Sunday, 6 November 2022 01:53 (three years ago)

Strokes are an interesting case because Countdown Machine or whatever it was called seemed to get some acclaimed praise.

no it just has a cult following here lol. their most recent one (the new abnormal) reviewed a fair bit better generally and rym adores it (bafflingly) but it's much worse!

ufo, Sunday, 6 November 2022 02:32 (three years ago)

Yeah, the Rate Your Music score/comments for The New Abnormal are bizarre. I like that album a decent amount but haven't gone back to it much at all whereas I still revisit Comedown Machine a lot. Weirdly Phoenix don't seem that popular on there at all. No bolded albums and those first two are weirdly low scores.

kitchen person, Sunday, 6 November 2022 03:10 (three years ago)

I always think of Rate Your Music of some sort of Metal haven. Too bad that concept could be great but isn't.

Bee OK, Sunday, 6 November 2022 03:30 (three years ago)

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/nov/05/phoenix-interview-alpha-zulu

djh, Sunday, 6 November 2022 10:10 (three years ago)

New album really good imo, probably their best since Wolfgang

groovypanda, Monday, 7 November 2022 08:10 (three years ago)

All eyes on me is weirdly anachronistic to me tho also satisfying. Stuck in the 00s? Is there anything there that would make one think it’s made any other time?

i'm right back on my shit (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 8 November 2022 19:13 (three years ago)

I like that it suddenly becomes a Cher song. Worth the build-up.

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 8 November 2022 23:29 (three years ago)

always hilarious seeing what music my young kids (under 5) gravitate to. they *love* the chorus on All Eyes on Me.
