Jarvis Cocker - Further Complications

Former Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker's second solo album was recorded by legendary engineer Steve Albini, after the two met at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago and tried a few songs together. Further Complications is rockier than his earlier solo work and his work with Pulp, which is maybe explained by Albini's presence, although the records also contains a few soul numbers such as Leftovers.

so i'm unsure why the U.S. release has more songs, that could be a mistake.

yeah it's weird the US release gets the title track. also kinda weird because it's a pretty catchy song... i'm wondering if it's a move to have a more radio-friendly single in the US? maybe not, since most of the album is pretty radio-friendly without it... who knows. i need to listen to it a few more times before i can really tell if i like it or not. at this point i'm kindof unimpressed.

maybe the extra tracks are coming out separately in the UK, b-sides or something

the UK tracklist is really odd, "I Never Said I Was Deep" is an obvious highlight!

id quite like to hear this but i think i liked him more when he wasnt on TV as the 'intellectual popstar' all the time.

Albini makes the album sound completely undynamic, but the songs are decent. "Angela" even reminds me of Urge Overkill, like, to a T.

sounds like a demo; but i dont think thats down to albini, it just sounds like a quickly put together piece. nothing amazing but You're In My Eyes is almost certainly the best solo track he's released

finally found it and it's OK, will have to listen to more to get a good read on it.

Paul Weller was never interesting, I don't think anyone pays serious attention to Ian Brown's solo stuff, and of course Jarvis is still great, which leaves... Morrissey, the readily overpraised, poorly aging, lecherous old man.

Having a pedo beard is far worse than being a portly man who complains about immigrants now and again.

fer jarv's first foray into pigfuck territory, i'd say i'm a fan, but i just wish there were some better tunes.

i was really bowled over by how much i like this.

a local music mag (Eye Weekly - Toronto) gave this album five stars! I don't know about that, but I'm digging his late attempt at garage rock (but I guess early Pulp stuff sort of trod this territory too?)

Haven't heard it all yet but so far, very very good. Angela should be a hit.

quite enjoying this record, doesn't sound that much like an albini recording, the drums aren't OTT roomy. he should do the next one at toe rag, the looser sound suits him well i think

Never paid much attention to Cocker or Pulp. I like this record for the most part but at times I think I'm listening to early Urge Overkill or Flight of the Concordes.
Just a thought.
