The Moderat thread (Apparat/Modeselektor collab)

No thread on this yet that I can find, other than a mention in the Apparat - Walls one. So, what do we reckon ILX? I've only listened twice through, but it's definitely pushing my buttons. With Apparat involved, it's going to sound great and it does, but it seems to have some excellent songs as well. A New Error, Rusty Nails and Seamonkey make for a really strong beginning. Big Burial influence on some of it (Rusty Nails especially - great breathy Apparat vocal on that one too) but it doesn't dominate.

Anyway, early days as yet but I liked it enough after two listens to pre-order it this afternoon.

Thoughts?

I liked it -- my AMG review, FWIW.

Haven't heard this yet but definitely looking forward to it.

It's £7.99 on Amazon.co.uk I think, that's where I ordered it from. As opposed to €18 on the Bpitch Control site. Free DVD too apparently.

Chris in Belfast, Thursday, 30 April 2009 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

there will be an NTSC release too, thanfully.

I like it well enough, but I do think the vocals are terrible. Luckily that only affects a few of the songs.

found this really boring, but i pretty much hate on modeselektor, both on record and live, they were on some big beat shit last time i saw them live, and i'm not too keen on apparat's vocals.

Suggesteban Cambiasso (jim), Thursday, 30 April 2009 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

I'm quite enjoying this, but then I enjoy pretty much everything with Apparat's name on it. Not sure prettying up dubstep is really what I'd ideally like from him, but it's pretty good.

fandango, Thursday, 30 April 2009 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

I still don't get the fuss over "Walls" at all, it's really mostly fluff (although the highs are very high). "Duplex" is a much more solid record.

I need to give this a proper listen but the samples inspired.. almost nothing in me tbh :/

fandango, Thursday, 30 April 2009 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

The booka shade remix of rusty nails is pretty sweet though!

Michael_Pemulis, Friday, 1 May 2009 00:54 (seventeen years ago)

Duplex was boring even by late-era IDM standards.

slugbaiting (rockapads), Friday, 1 May 2009 01:24 (seventeen years ago)

well maybe what I feel is that it did all of the mostly good things about Walls first, minus the totally cringe bits, minus the over-polish and felt a lot more coherent. With a bit less range sure, but the range on Walls mostly extends to tracks that are pretty bad.

fandango, Friday, 1 May 2009 07:11 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know what album y'all are listening to but I'm still thinking this is awesome and second only to Fever Ray this year. The DVD is pretty sweet too - mostly black & white & minimal, but very nice.

Looking forward to catching their set at Dissonanze this weekend. Like the record v.much

Capitaine Jay Vee, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

Modeselektor live 3 years ago was one of the most fun sets I've attended.
The minute of the Modeselektor set I saw last year turned me off them for good. Here's hoping Apparat can salvage them, doing what he did to them what he did to Ellen Allien.

Edward Saroyan, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 23:50 (seventeen years ago)

Anyone else think the chorus of Stick With It should have been sung by Bowie?

StanM, Friday, 8 May 2009 10:29 (seventeen years ago)

Depending on the version you get, you'll have two or four more tracks that aren't mentioned in any review since the promo only had 11 tracks:

http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:fjfqxz9kldde = 11 tracks
http://bpitchcontrol.de/product/481 = 13 tracks
http://bpitchcontrol.de/product/526 = 15 tracks (+ DVD)

I don't know Modeselektor's previous stuff, but it's not quite Orchestra Of Bubbles or Walls. Still pretty great though.

Chris in Belfast, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 09:32 (seventeen years ago)

Walls is pretty weak IMO

william snakespeare (braveclub), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 10:00 (seventeen years ago)

Oof, have to disagree. Beautiful album IMO. Orchestra of Bubbles is the best thing he's been involved in though, for me.

Chris in Belfast, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

Johnny Fever, if you downloaded it weeks ago *cough*, you might want to make sure you have the actual album version and not the promo. The promo was in mono, as mentioned elsewhere, and lacks some of the oomph of the released version.

I just read the press release for this and it made me laugh:

"Szary and Bronsert, both proud fathers, were on their way to the "Stadtbad Mitte" (Berlin-Mitte City Pool) with their children for their regular Monday swimming lessons when they ran into Ring, a devout bachelor who happened to be
accompanied by several dubious females."

‘Bad Kingdom’, the first vocal-led track, begins with electro bass-stabs (SBTRKT comes to mind) before morphing into the kind of cloying post-rave pop that riddled the early ’90s (think The Beloved’s ‘Sweet Harmony’) – all leisurely breakbeats, church-y synths, angelic choirs and falsetto vocals.

Haha, he just described like half my favourite tunes from the early 90s. There's something wrong with anyone who doesn't like the combination of leisurely breakbeats and church-y synths.

III

Coinciding with a Spring 2016 tour Moderat return with their new album III:

Release Date: April 1, 2016

Intent on creating something that contrasted their own individual projects, Moderat ‑ the trio comprised of Gernot Bronsert, Sebastian Szary (aka Modeselektor) and Sascha Ring (aka Apparat) ‑ complete the trilogy with III.

III pairs an emotional pull with sensual imagery, creating dynamic sound and depth with sophisticated lyrics and themes as they direct their gaze inward.
Apparat gives unfiltered insight into his personal take on the journey we call life ‑ he is opening up, discussing his shadow, his fears and doubts.
Modeselektor reach another level, develop an intoxicating energy with their distinct rhythmical textures.

One of the best parts of Moderat is their use of electronics to achieve orchestral diversity. With III, they update the songwriting tradition with an intriguing palette, born of careful attention and skill, informed by their experiences with sounds of nearly 25 years of sub‑and‑club culture. These three were initially brought together by Berlin's now legendary rave scene and with this as their common foundation as individuals, III signifies Moderat's maturation in modern pop and mastery of the group.

Moderat's III is out April 1, 2016 on Monkeytown Records.
The trio will take their impressive live show all over Europe and North America in support of this release.

StanM, Saturday, 2 April 2016 15:08 (ten years ago)

I've heard the first half, there are a lot more vocals that on their other albums (that's not necessarily a bad thing, but I like when they mix it up between tracks with vocals and vocal-free bangers)

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 3 April 2016 07:30 (ten years ago)

I was at a wedding so I'm a bit drunk and this might not make any sense tomorrow but I just heard this album and life of pablo by Kanye and it's so noticeable how superior the production is on this album. Wishful thinking but i'd love to have moderat producing a kanye album. This is just sooo good a production and Kanye clearly wants to sound this good in his backtracks but doesn't know how. The mastering is fucking terrible on kanye and I want Moderat to shine in the mainstream because both modeselektor and apparat are so brilliant that they deserve to be known worldwide.

Don't mind me doesn't make sense but I'm drunk and I want to hear a moderat produced mainstream album.

Related: Finder is fucking awesome but this whole album is.

agree 100% with this.

but given that i love the Rhye album, this has totally clicked with me now.
