I've only listened to it once and actually found it pretty charming but the medley is just stupid so there's my vote.

ColinO, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

The Times They Are a-Changin' is pretty dumb too. What a way to spoil a party. BUZZKILL

tylerw, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

Mike Love Factor: During the version of "Ruby Baby", he did extemporise going "yeah, Oink Oink" during the 'fade'.

However, the track was not included on this album, but is on the box set "best of".

Mark G, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

xpost. It's a pretty raucous, irreverant version of The Times They Are a-Changin' though. I mean, they are all cracking up all the way through, shouting stuff etc. Devoted To You, There's No Other and Mountain of Love are the winners on this album for me, probably because the goofy adlibs are minimal and the vocals are really cool. The rest have more or less the same good things and bad things about them. I'm voting for the medley, which is a mess but in the context of the "party" concept, it's quite authentic. It actually sounds like a bunch of drunk people failing to remember a song.

I've listened to this exactly twice, the first time around deciding I never needed to hear it again but I tried it again for the purposes of this poll. I don't find it interesting or entertaining at all. Voted the medley.

I like this album.

I have never heard this album.

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 19:50 (seventeen years ago)

I think I would enjoy this album more if the concept had been executed in, say, 1975

Wrinkles, I'll See You On the Other Side (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 19:52 (seventeen years ago)

like, they all get together for a slapdash collection of covers (ostensibly in a "party" setting) but Brian only wants to do Shortnin Bread, Dennis is coked out of his mind, Fataar and Chapin wanna do some Wings songs, Mike Love does a solo on his jug (of apple juice)

Wrinkles, I'll See You On the Other Side (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

Best thing about it is the huge overwhelming vocal harmonies that just crash over two or three of the songs. Apart from the five Beach Boys there's a peanut gallery of hangers-on (mostly with good voices) adding vocals too. There's No Other is quite amazing for that. The harmonies on Devoted To You are beautiful too.

I believe that's called "15 Big Ones," Shakey...

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 20:01 (seventeen years ago)

And it eats ass.

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 20:01 (seventeen years ago)

haha - well I like that album fine, but its a little too polished to work as a stand-in, I think (all those synths and session players)

Wrinkles, I'll See You On the Other Side (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 20:06 (seventeen years ago)

I'm listening to this now and it is the very definition of throwaway, can't say any of it really appeals

Wrinkles, I'll See You On the Other Side (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

Devoted to You is kinda nice I guess

iatee, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

wow this medley is borderline offensive in its laziness

Wrinkles, I'll See You On the Other Side (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

Brian only wants to do Shortnin Bread

Have you read the Iggy Pop story in Catch A Wave?

fit and working again, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

no do tell!

Wrinkles, I'll See You On the Other Side (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

even barbara ann, geir?

Yes, definitely. That song is Mike Love by numbers.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 21:15 (seventeen years ago)

...When louche punk rocker Iggy Pop showed up to party, he was at first entranced by Brian's charisma and fell happily into one of the complicated, multipart sing-alongs of "Shortenin' Bread" Brian loved to lead. What Iggy didn't know was that once a coked-up Brian got started with "Shortenin' Bread," he could go on for literally hours on end. And he still showed no sign on quitting when Iggy -- who wore glitter makeup and slashed his own flesh with broken glass in the midst of his performances -- backed out of the room and turned to Hutton, proclaiming: "I gotta get out of here, man. This guy is nuts!

Great book btw.

fit and working again, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

iatee, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

tylerw, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 21:29 (seventeen years ago)

now we're reaching dream song territory

iatee, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

i bet it would sound kinda like "sun arise" off of "love it to death" by alice cooper

fuck c0mpton (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 21:37 (seventeen years ago)

I bought this album during college at the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame on a freshly pressed Capitol reissue, and to my surprise, upon removing the shrink-wrap, found that they had reprinted the cards w/ photos on them that came with the original album.

And no, I didn't go to college at the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame, but like Naive Teen Idol, I went to college NEAR the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame.

majored in Wenner Studies, no doubt

tylerw, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 21:44 (seventeen years ago)

we were both TIMARA majors. That stands for Time I Mastered A Real Art.

You don't know how long that took me.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 23:38 (seventeen years ago)

Great album guys! You can't beat "There's No Other" for an excellent vocal.

You don't know how long that took me.
I'd say about 4 1/2 years, Dan, am I right?

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 01:40 (seventeen years ago)

that's fucking hilarious.

For the records it took me 4 years and 2 months at Raritan Valley Community College to get my final 3 credits, but thats only because I transferred out of the conservatory to get a real degree.
