what happened to dem 2

just looked at my last question and this new one popped up....What did happen to dem 2. I think that for a while there in the late 90's they were arguably the most exciting production team in Britain, and then they dissapeared without a trace. Anyone know why?

for those who don't know dem2 (aka U.S. Alliance) be sure to hunt down:

"All I Know" "Destiny" "Baby (you're so sexy)" "Desire"

they're working again after a small hiatus, from what i hear - they may have something coming on Locked On, but Locked On is being close-mouthed as ever about it.

definitely expect something later this year or early next.

The last things I recall them doing was a totally bizarre remix of Basement Jaxx's "Jump & Shout" and a slamming one of Divine Styler's "Directrix". That would have been late 99/early 2000. What happened to them after that, I have no idea...

And yes, they were fantastic. Also search their Don't Cry Dub of Groove Connection 2's "Club Lonely".

the last things i actually have from them are a couple of remixes of "temple of love" on planet phat records and a "summer is here" remix on union jack whose name i can't remember, but it's got nice steel drums in it - both those are late 2000 so they slightly postdate the "directrix" remixes. which is rather unimportant, but i find them superior as well - they were playing with bump'n'flex-style hooky riffs and generating really strange sounds as well.

personal favorite - their "mash up dub" of de souza - keep it coming.

i think "destiny" was the first 2-step song i ever heard and it made me want to mince around like a ninny, i fucking loved it. such a weird combination of slow and speedy. as long as we're talking 2-step are the dubaholics worth digging into? they had a mix of "desire" by ultra nate that i've long held up in my mind as the bar to reach.

In December 1999 Locked On A&R man Andy Lewis said they were working on an album. The only thing I've heard from Dem 2 since was the Divine Styler remix in June 2000. Lewis went on to sign The Streets and now works for Virgin Records.

Re: Dubaholics, the only one I know is Do Me Baby, which is pretty good. That was from 2000 as well.

agreed, Cooper - I love that 12" (De Souza - "Keep It Comin'), both sides

Re: Dubaholics, Tracer you need to hear their "Dub Mix" (as opposed to the normal remix) of Matt Darey's "Beautiful" - sometimes I think it's the sexiest garage has ever gotten.

"Do Me Baby" is great also - stonkin' soca beat hot sex action way ahead of its time, which it hides by being so shamelessly pop.
