What are some good bands that have that ethereal, only-sounds-good-late-at-night sound?

(by the way, someone posted the names of some Slowdive-esque bands, but I can't remember their names. Help me!)

COCTEAU TWINS!

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...followed swiftly by This Mortal Coil (and about three dozen other 4AD acts, really), Bowery Electric, A.R.Kane, post-COLOUR OF SPRING Talk Talk (notably SPIRIT OF EDEN and LAUGHING STOCK).

In fairly permanent placement by my bedside CD player are the following:

Popol Vuh, Ash Ra Tempel (Albums: Blackouts, New Age of Earth, Inventions for Electric Guitar) Klaus Shulze (Albums: Blackdance and Timewind) Flying Sauce Attack Loren Mazzacane Connors: Airs Edgar Froese, PanAmerican & LaBradford

Those are the most rock and guitar orientated albums, as I got the impression thats what you were after. There's also ambient stuff like Eno, irresistable Force and the Orb and a pile of Indian classical albums - the banging Bollywood hits never seemed quite mellow enough. Flying Saucer Attack are similar to Slowdive except much better, and I quite like Slowdive so thats not a dig.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, I feel sleepy now. G'night Jimbob.

Well, a lot of sharp answers already chosen, so yay. Most everything on Kranky and a fair amount of VHF, though certainly not all.

On a different note, Lull, Thomas Koner, EAR and more do a good job at creating late-night music that's actually quite unsettling. And I've always found the Cure's Faith especially good at low volume late at night. Songs like "All Cats are Grey" and "The Funeral Party" are especially beautiful and dreamy.

cocteau twins seconded. grimble grumble, sweet jesus (although they were perhaps glam-shoegaze!), alisons halo, people often say bethany curve or mallory but i've never heard them. secret shine.

gareth, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for all the suggestions... I think my two favorites are Slowdive and Labradford, so I suppose I'm looking for anything in those veins. Keep the suggestions coming!

Manny Parsons, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Manny, you should certainly check out Surface of Eceon and Landing - especially The King Beneath the Mountain (SOE) and Oceanless (L). Also, the most recent Stars of the Lid on Kranky is especially worth mentioning.

Clarke B., Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Most emphatically, COCTEAU TWINS!!!

Sweet Jesus? You are joking aren't you?

Harold Budd, Debussy, Cocteau Twins, not forgetting Cocteau Twins.

Tom Ewing knows nothing about music.

chris sallis, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ignore him.

Regarding Cocteau Twins: I bought Treasure, as suggested by AMG, but to my surprise, it didn't really catch my interest... Would I be better off with a later release?

I've been hearing band of susans' word and the fleah alb this last few days. Definetely has a 'dreamy' quality (don't exactly what it means tho).

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Windy and Carl,Bark Psychosis,Roy Montgomery, Terry Riley and I second the reccomendations for Landing and post- "Color of Spring" Talk Talk.

brg30, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Manny, might I suggest tracking down the Cocteaus' compilation, THE PINK OPAQUE from about `85. It was the first bit of music of theirs I'd heard, and it simply blew a gaping hole in my head. GO FETCH!!!!

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

only-sounds-good-late-at-night? naaa, it's always good!

Try Heaven or Las Vegas. That was their second album that I heard (4 Calendar Cafe was the first), but it's the one that really made me fall in love with them.

lyra in seattle, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yus, Heaven's a beaut. Though I was also the one who wrote the Treasure review, so if you can't enjoy that one, you are FILLED WITH SATAN. Well, maybe not. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

seefeel! seefeel!!! especially "polyfusia" and also the cocteau twins "otherness" ep, remixed by mark clifford of seefeel ("cherry coloured funk" - bloody amazing). "starethrough" is also great.

slightly outside of that realm: rome's s/t on thrill jockey (spacy almost krauty), kinesthesia's "empathy box" (sort of SAWII but better), selected ash ra tempel releases...

In The Pink Opaque is long since out of print, but is has been replaced with a different comp called Stars and Topsoil

If Stars doesn't have "Millimillenary," it is inferior.

i didn't think stars and topsoil was that good a comp, strange choice of tracks if you ask me (which you didn't). only one from victorialand? no spangle maker? sigh...

gareth, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Pink Opaque" was OOP but Jo at the 4AD online shop has recently acquired some. The new comp doesn't have "Millimillenary" on it, but it does have selections from the later 4AD records which were more "ethereal". "Victorialand" is my favourite. Robin is busy remixing the early albums and they are going to be released without bonus tracks, so snap up "Garlands" while it's still available.

Andrew Norman, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, and in case anyone else is looking for such bands, definitely check out Tarentel's "From Bone to Satellite." It sounds sort of like Labradford, but perhaps a bit less less minimal.

Manny Parsons, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Personally, I think that etherial/spacy/dreamy stuff sounds best on a summery afternoon, not late at night.

Christine "Green Leafy" Indigo, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mazzy star or cowboy junkies

kiwi, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Stars and Topsoil has two tracks from Victorialand, Lazy Calm and The Thinner The Air.

So there :)

chris sallis, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That was my revenge for someone pointing out that "Manhattan Murder Mystery" is an unwatchable Woody Allen film rather than an unlistenable VU track.

chris sallis, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Pink Opaque" changed my life. I bought it when I was 18 years old and it was my first Cocteau Twins album. I love that album more than anyone else.

salvador, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I weep in the large gap of my Cocteau Twins collection. Ah well, with the remastered editions coming, I don't feel so bad. Oh and to answer the question: first two Pale Saints LP's and the Japanese CD compiling the Saints b-sides and odds and ends.

JC, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Birchville Cat Motel. damn trippy/sleepy/dreamy; send you beyond the veil and leave you there in an HP lovecraft hallucination, but not so slimey.

Andrew, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the new Cody lp sounds something like a twee bark psychosis.
