Avril Lavigne... sneaky, very sneaky.

Do you know anything about this Canadian pixie? Her video depicts her running rampant through the mall, going crazy with the skater boys, being looked down upon by the snooty girls for not being ladylike; but she doesn't care, and sprays $200 perfume in her armpit. She won't be tamed, she won't be controlled by the label (they brought her tunes, which she soundly rejected, and then wrote all the tunes on her record)... It's a page from Pink's book, but in a more skater-friendly way. She's a pint-sized bad girl that happens to look like a hot little model.

We argued about it, and I said: what's wrong? How's it different from Brittny or any other manufactured pop confection? But my foil says it's more insidious, that she's a manufactured anti-popstar, seemingly "breaking the rules" and flipping the bird to the corporate bigwigs, "just being herself", etc... but it's all a sham and she should be ashamed of herself.

What's your take?

dude, she's different that everyone else ya know? just like us, you and me. she's alternative. she dresses zany and cool. she's unique. like, people aren't just all plastic ya know, some of us are real on the inside. i feel like when no one understands me, ya know because i'm different like her, she's there saying 'i understand, i feel like you'. i just wanna live my own life too.

I thought this was a new shakira single but then I was slightly let down

Josh, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it is all a sham. the video smacks of that new radicals clip with the insurgent teens in the mall...

mike bott, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you can be bought, your going to do what sells records.

brg30, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't you see? She's punk.

Mark, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Does screwing around at the mall with sk8ter boyz really even imply "breaking the rules"?

I think the times we live in right now are so confused that this really means following them. The first time I saw this video, I felt genuine empathy for the guy dressed up as a hot dog who got upturned by Avril and her band-cum-posse. Aren't people who harass the guy who's sweating in foam for $5 an hour doing pretty much the exact same thing that his employers are?

maura, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

except that New Radicals single was transcendent corporate pop and this is fkn' blah

M Matos, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not so much transcendence as efflorescence, M. An exuding stream.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Transcendant corporate pop? The perfect virus? Watch out -- I think the rhesus monkey is going to sneeze.

jack cole, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That New Radicals single was a lowpoint in humanity's existence. Greg Alexander, after all his "aaaahhhh, I hate coporate pop whore existence, listen to my rock" posturing, was last scene writing singles for Ronan Keating. He is a complete cunt.

six months pass...
you know....yes its the bad girl image for Avril and its the hot sexy young thing 4 Britney, but in these guys eyes it sells, and it sells well.
i dont think its really healthy 4 the young...but, id rather my daughter have taste in Av's music than Brit,Av shows more guts and i think its great self esteem 4 young girls going thru a change in there lives.where as Brit's shows us how 2 get sexually harrased and maybe not be able 2 handle it well, cause all she can think about is her lipstick, Britney has a nice voice, Avril has a better voice and rocks sideways.......cheers.

This is the best criticism on either artist I've read in quite a while.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 January 2003 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Apart from the sartorial appropriation (see Band T-shirt Etiquette and, of course, Shania Twain's Ramones T-shirt: C/D? ), she's no different from Brittny, Christina (ooh, excuse me, "Xtina), Pink (ooh, excuse me again, "P!nk") and the rest of'em.

Avri1, unlike 8ritn3y, doesn't give me a b0n3r whatsoever.

yeah chaki that was pretty much ten shades past classic. tremendous work.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 25 January 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I love chaki, cos basically he'd bang anything with a vagina judging by how often he says stuff like that. He's definitely my type of guy, we'd totally hang and I'd tell everyone he's a total lowlife and therefore he's awesome.

avril is all cool, though it kinda looks to me as if she tries only too hard to keep that "authentic" image of hers..and though she looks kinda stuck up in some of her interviews..but shes cool..obviously shes not that much of a rule-breaker though, seeing as she still has a contract right..i mean, if her company didnt want her to do what she does, she obviously wouldnt b doing it..so yeah she does have to follow some rules, otherwise she wouldnt b where she is at the moment..and who knows, if one day her company came asking her to wear britney-like clothes, i'm not sure if she'd refuse!..i'm not too sure what that girl is about..and to b honest, i dont think she knows herself either..she's only too young...for now i think she's just caught up in this big thing and just plays along..and since shes having fun and makes money outta it, then its all good!..i dont think anybody can tell for sure what avril is about..but as long as it sells then its good for her company and she gonna keep on doing it..and yeah i personally like her and her songs and i feel close to her too, closer than i do to britney anyway..not that i have anything against britney..both avril and britney are prof..britney's pop and gets paid to do a total different thing than avril..they both are good at what they do! avril does have a way better voice though, just to b fair!

thirteen years pass...

apparently there is a not-small contingent of people on the internet who believe she died in 2003. for evidence, they point to the fact that her aesthetic changed around that time, becoming more "pop."

avril fans would rather she died than sold out.
