Bands You're "Supposed" to Like, But Actually Suck

You know who I mean. They always turn up in those top 100 lists but no one can actually manage to listen to an entire album without vomiting all over themselves. The bands whose names only get around because they keep showing up in those damn lists so all the audiophiles run out and buy their album and pretend like they like it and tell all their friends that they're into them so they can get some street cred. Name some!

Dan-o, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pink Floyd. Grateful Dead. Mike Oldfield.

Lord Custos III, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

gollyi can't wait to see some more names listed here i haf already learnt so much

mark s, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually think the whole concept of "bands you're supposed to like" is dependent on who you pay attention to, and the idea of "suck" is a strictly personal one. Everything is subjective and there is no real standard on "who I mean".

That said: Fugazi, Fugazi, Fugazi. Argh.

Nate Patrin, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Radiohead is so.. uh, slightly better than average. I'll never understand the hype about them. White Stripes too.

Manny Parsons, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's Mike Oldfield hegemony all over the place!

Tracer Hand, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Vice.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"street cred"

The Actual Mr. Jones, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wait i finally understand the question: bands you're supposed to actually suck instead of like! my answer is GARBAGE!!

Tracer Hand, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll teach you to suck X!

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wooly Octagons.

DeRayMi, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean The Street Creds

The Actual Mr. Jones, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the white stripes are musical junk food. but i like them.

add 90's REM to the list.

mike (ro)bott, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In light of Tracer's comments, I'll pick the White Stripes. Mmmm, Jack White.

Sean, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is this where i remind everyone of my pre-teen fantasy-terror, of being gang-raped by slade?

mark s, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

PRiMaL SCReaM.

DavidM, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pavement, Radiohead, Slint, Beat Happening!, Bikini Kill

Alex in NYC, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lucinda Williams. Jeff Buckley. Wilco. Moby.

special to nate & other MN ILMers: Mason Jennings.

GCannon, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was gonna be all "aw crap, another guy who hates Wilco" but the Mason Jennings reference just made my weekend. I blame Jim Walsh for that whole hype machine myself.
Almost as bad as the Minnesota Cavalcade of Mason Jennings Luv is the fawning adoration for Tulip Sweet and Her Trail of Tears. I reviewed them for demorama.com before nearly everyone else got ahold of them and trashed their CD pretty bad in something like two sentences. Then City Pages started heaping on the praise and everyone else followed suit and here I am feeling like a colossal chumpass because I just don't "get it" or something. (NYC folx: TS&HTOT headed from Minneapolis to NYC to try to make it big -- have they succeeded at all?)

Nate Patrin, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Van Morrison.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Notorious B.I.G, Tupac Shakur

Motel Hell, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I borrowed the last Mogwai album purely because the critics are right up their arse. Come on, this is really boring pretentious shit. I know they slagged off Blur and I can't stand them either although I have to say at least they can up with a hummable tune. Mogwai can talk a good game but I think they are very lucky boys to be held in such high esteem. Pricks.

johnnydexter, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm enourmously heartened by the fact that nobody's taken this seriously.

Tom, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, and as founder and occasional moderator of ILM I pronounce that the only band you're 'supposed' to like is ABBA. So proclaim their suckage by all means.

Tom, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So much over rated crap - Neal Young, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Richard Thompson, Velvetta Underground, Stokes, Dinosaur Jr., Soundgarden, Grateful Dead.

richee, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Love. I dont get it yet.

Simon, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe I should just post a bunch of random bands even if they're not massively hyped or I don't actually think they suck.
Daft Punk! Jesus and Mary Chain! Elvis Costello! DJ Shadow! The Avalanches! Pavarotti! I AM COOL

Nate Patrin, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes Television, Sonic Youth and Slint, but especially Sonic Youth

george gosset, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

New Order. Esp. odd since I love the Cure songs where they shamelessly rip them off.

And just about anything "emo," though yer not really "supposed to" like emo are you? Though that means that I've developed a strong, retroactive loathing for Hüsker Dü (who are responsible for emo).

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My Bloody Valentine, especially the album 'Loveless'.

I imagine you could listen to the whole album if you turned the volume really low and fell asleep. But you'd probably wake up in a bad mood.

Jesse, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Every band that ever existed.

Marc, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Marc wins!

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My Bloody Valentine, especially the album 'Loveless'.

I second this!

aaron m, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

blur...

i don't hate them because they're beautiful, but really after all the cash i invested in them kink's reissues this is material is ever so slightly redundant isn't it ?

mike (ro)bott, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

shhhh. are you people all crazy? "they" will banish you! forever!! (you know who i mean).

The Actual Mr. Jones, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wha? How are Husker Du resposible for "emo"? I'd sooner point fingers at Fugazi/Minor Threat and the rest of the D.C. hardcore scene including Gray Matter, Rites of Spring, Nation of Ulysses, etc., let alone equally "sincere"/"pious" bands like 7 Seconds and Code of Honor. I'd also accuse folks like Bono and Morrissey as having more to do with inspiring "emo" than Husker Du. Were Mould & Hart's songs "emotional"? Certainly, but that band was so much more than simply a vehicle for the strain of insufferably earnest exhortations that typify today's "emo" scene.

But, "emo"'s a ridiculous concept to begin with, so I suppose this is all academic.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm enourmously heartened by the fact that nobody's taken this seriously.

I'm not so sure about that.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ned- i thought when tom said that he was being sarcastic.

JUlio Desouza, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is where the power of the winky face as a signifier starts to make itself clear.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i never use those face things (i'm so out of touch heh). But I couldn't believe he could say that w/ a straight face as ppl seemed to be giving serious kind answers (as you've said).

Julio Desouza, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't know if these meet the full criteria as specified right at the top of this thread, but the Sacred Cows that EVERYONE else seems to like, but which I find loathsome, are...Abba - fuckoff fuckoff FUCKOFF. I don't want to go to Butlins.Tamla FUCKING Motown - ooh baby yeah spoon-feed me that bathos....So-Called fucking SOUL music - hmmmmm, baby, FEEL the depth of my sincerity....

Ray M, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ray you beat me too it, when I read this "no one can actually manage to listen to an entire album without vomiting all over themselves" I knew I was on the right track.... 1. ABBA 2. Ms SPEARS

kiwi, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The correct answer to the question "What bands is one supposed to like, but they suck" is "Bjork."

John Darnielle, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Bjork' -
Shit yeah wish I'd thought of that one too...
Seem to have started a major boldtype thing there - sorry, meant to do line breaks but I'm a bit drunk at the moment.
Still that's not gonna stop me going off to another couple of threads now too... (hic)

Ray M, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ok there's been some really bad calls on this thread....

firstly on the pink floyd/mike oldfield thing...c'mon aside from a few rare syd barrett releases there is no yuppie audiophile out there who is really gonna pressure you into liking either....

some correct answers should have included: The New York Dolls (see simon reynolds on the subject) Talking Heads (dito) The Velvet Fucking Underground The Fall (this is a weird one...i actually like the fall but there is no real reason that i SHOULD) Tribe Called Quest,Common,Roots,Black Eyed Peas and other 'white boy' hip hop (Tribe Called Quest actually have some moments but they should be critisized for starting the whole 'intelligent' bullshit) Fad Gadget ( sucks...i'm sorry...depeche mode are so much better)

geeg, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bold powers deactivate.

jack cole, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The correct answer to the question "What bands is one supposed to like, but they suck" is "Bjork."

Yes, John you are correct!! But in the realm of J Crew All American 20-30-somethings Jimmy Buffett seems more appropriate.

brg30, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wow i'm not alone in hating bjork, jimmy buffet, wilco, the white stripes, the grateful dead and pink floyd!

one month passes...
There is a certain pleasure in just saying these in public, paqrticularly when the ILM canon meets the canon canon, and they're both wrong.

So: pavement, stereolab, tortoise, suicide.

Matt C., Friday, 6 September 2002 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Have you guys missed anybody who's put a note to record?

Although I'm really glad I never got the memo that we were supposed to like Jimmy Buffet.

wl, Friday, 6 September 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

John is OTM Bjork is the obvious choice. What do people see in her I never understood. She sucks badly. No. 2 would probably be her compatriots Sigur Ros. Jonsi's voice is like the antithesis to the Sirens, i.e. those creatures singing sweet songs in Greek mythology who were half woman half bird. Thankfully Odysseus has the recipe here as well. His wax-to-plug-the-ears-trick helps a lot to survive this music.

She also plays the main role in the film I am supposed to like which I really hate. It is Dancer in the Dark. WTF. One of those films which tells me nothing about my life but a lot about the annoying morbidity of some human minds out there.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 6 September 2002 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Bowie, Lucinda Williams, (seventies) Stevie Wonder, Janis Joplin, Radiohead, Aerosmith, Steely Dan, Led Zeppelin, Sonic Youth, Wilco. I didn't know I was supposed to like Pink Floyd or the Grateful Dead, but certainly they suck.

Burr, Friday, 6 September 2002 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

weren't bowie floyd bringing home certain truths at their time (71-77, 77 -80, 20... ?) that only their clout inindustry allowed them to spread en masse ? eg floyd claim "one of these days" so-called as it was one of those days in the studio -- well the band could afford to do what they wanted with their private helicopter couldn't they ..

george gosset (gegoss), Saturday, 7 September 2002 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt C wants to suck Eminem - Motel Hell wants to suck Biggie and Tupac - dude that's some SICK SHIT - and i don't even wanna know what george is getting up to in the private helicopter!
