Parade of Identical Song Titles

I am probably not the first person to bring this up but I think it would be NEATO RAD to make a mix tape (has to be cassette) with a bunch of songs that have the same title (not covers). So side A could start out with the Animals' "Don't Bring Me Down" and the Who's "We're Not Gonna Take It" and the Chemical Brothers' "Surrender" while side B could have the respective (in titles at least) songs by ELO, Twisted Sister and Cheap Trick.

This would also save room on the J-card. Any other suggestions?

Nate Patrin, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha this replicates a conversation we were having in the pub tonight re. Russ Abbot's "Atmosphere" and Joy Division's "Atmosphere". Not quite as highbrow perhaps but what a bootleg!

Tom, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"I Want You" by Elvis Costello, Elastica, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Basement Jaxx, etc.

M Matos, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"I Love You" by the Volumes and Donna Summer
"I Am the Walrus" by the Beatles and the Dead Milkmen

M Matos, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

-"Mr. Moonlight" by Clinic and either the Beatles or Roy Lee Johnson depending on if you want a dual-pronged Liverpudlian assault or not.
-"One More Time" by Daft Punk and The Clash
-"I Don't Care" by The Ramones and Black Flag
I am sure "Tonight" has been done by a ton of people but for some odd reason the two I'd pick would be Iggy Pop and the Avalanches.

Nate Patrin, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Velvets "Rock and Roll" and whoever else did a song with that title (there must be lots, right?).

M Matos, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Somehow Led Zeppelin forgot to sue the Mission UK, as both bands have songs titled "Over the Hills & Far Away."

Both Killing Joke and Robbie Williams have tracks called "Millenium."

Alex in NYC, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"The End" by The Doors & The Beatles

aaron m, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

patti smith and U2 "gloria"

Aaron G!, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"One Monkey Don't Stop No Show" by Joe Tex, Honey Cone and Stick McGhee. Three different songs, I believe!

Douglas, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, Stick McGhee and Pere Ubu both have a "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee- O-Dee," too (okay, I think Ubu spells theirs a little differently).

Douglas, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The "Gloria" that Patti Smith sang was a twisted cover of a song originally penned by Van Morrison's THEM, I believe (also covered by the Doors at one point).

Alex in NYC, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i forgot about them! (sorry) the cover on the cambodian rocks cd is quite enjoyable as well...

Aaron G!, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Run Run Run" by the Who, the Velvets, and the Stimulators. The last one being possibly the best.

ciaran, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Love Song" by, lets say The Damned and, um, Tesla. No, The Cure.

Sinner, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There are about a billion songs titled "Stay", including tracks by Pink Floyd, Bowie, Low, Lisa Loeb, Erykah Badu, and many others.

There are also a lot of songs called "Summer".

Phil, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Favorite juxtaposition yet: "Hey Boy Hey Girl" by both Louis Prima and the Chemical Brothers.

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Another popular one: "Mother". Pink Floyd, John Lennon, Danzig, etc.

Phil, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"These Days" by R.E.M., Bon Jovi, Jackson Browne, Joy Division, the Rentals, Jesus and Mary Chain, plus the kajillion covers of Browne's song by the likes of Nico, 10,000 Maniacs, Golden Palominos, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band etc.

Aaron, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Power of Love" Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Jennifer Rush, and Huey Lewis and the News

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(ubu had a low-key thing abt giving an ubu song a name that was already taken, on every LP starting from dub housing: sadly the only ones i can remember off the top my head are "goodbye" and "miss you")

mark s, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"One Step Closer" Linkin Park and S Club Juniors.

off the top o my head i thought of "i wanna be your boyfriend" by the ramones and the rubinoos. and there appears to have been yet a different song with the same title by the pushtwangers. a finnish band (a self-proclaimed "funpowerpunkpop" group called "hundred million martians) apparently thought this was neat-o and made a 4-song ep of 3 cover versions of the aforementioned tunes + an original composition with the same title.

glancing at my fast growing itunes collection, i see that the jam liked simple titles that were, unsurprisingly, used by others. cases in point:

--"ghosts" by the jam, albert ayler, ooberman (and probably several other artists) --"monday" by the jam, birdie (and probably several other artists)

i can think of one mccartney penned tune with a re-used title: "tomorrow" (from wings' "wild life" album, i think) was reused by the three o'clock and probably others. dunno if anyone's had the guts to title a song "yesterday," though. at least not since the 60s anyway.

a couple others that may not count due to slight differences in punctuation/spelling:

--"something for the weekend" by the divine comedy & "something 4 the weekend" by super furry animals --"shoot shoot" by kaito & "shoot, shoot!" by solex

nan, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Changes" by David Bowie & Tupac "Time" by Tom Waits & Pink Floyd
You missed a beauty of a segue. Bowie also has a song called "Time"

Lord Custos III, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hey Joe" by Jimi Hendrix & Daniel Johnston

aaron m, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"So What" -- Miles Davis, meet Anti-Nowhere League. I'd be hard- pressed to come up with two more disparate songs than that.

Nate Patrin, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ministry does 'So What' as well.

bnw, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"love song" is also by simple minds off their best work 'sister feeling call'/'sons and fascination' "run run run" ia also by hunters and collectors off their first/best epynomous album+ep

but "blue monday" by the post-joy-division-wannabes should be excluded or perhaps distinguished as a then (un)important new low cash-in even for pop music -- burn the music betraying its ordinary influence (or "inspired" even for-cry-sake)

george gosset, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"do it again" by steely dan/beach boys, did someone already say that? also "i'm a man" by bo diddley/spencer davis group & "queen bitch" by david bowie/lil kim.

, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"who's that girl" by madonna and eve.

di, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"So What" was also a single by German weirdoes Philip Boa and the Voodoo Club.

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I recommend Spiritualized's album 'Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space'. It includes 'Come Together' (MC5, Primal Scream, Ike & Tina Turner, Diana Ross), 'Stay With Me' (Faces, Grooverider, DJ Stompy - the Lorraine Ellison song and covers thereof has 'Baby' at the end), 'Electricity' (Avalanches, Beefheart, Pet Shop Boys) and 'Home of the Brave' (the title of Spector's greatest obscurity, by Bonnie and the Treasures).

Martin Skidmore, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Ship of Fools" by:

John Cale The Grateful Dead The Doors Robert Plant The Residents World Party Van Der Graaf Generator Erasure

I never could understand how this rather bizarre concept became such a heavily-used trope in pop music.

J, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Pretenders II album gets double mention on this thread for including a "Day After Day" that's not the Badfinger song, and a "Louie Louie" that is not THE "Louie Louie."

briania, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Best of My Love" - The Emotions, The Eagles

mike, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, "Seven Years" - completely different songs by My Dad Is Dead, Lighthouse Keepers and Eyeless In Gaza.

mike, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
