I hadn't listened to prog rock in years until recently....I couldn't shake an oppressive little nag (that i will attribute to sad lefty british journalists) that prog was the worst word in the musical lexicon. Is there anybody out there who is pissed off that certain journalist types will have you believe that a knee-jerk punk attitude towards prog-rock still holds any water. I mean it seems that the whole resistance to prog-rock by the british is based on their own hyper intense class-consciousness (ie. prog-rock is the music of the middle-class therefore it is shit) I'm sorry, but here in North America nothing could be farther from the truth...if you go to the poorest trailer-parks chances are you'll see more "pink floyd-tour 88" t-shirts than "Suicide" shirts...and wait another thing...why does the art-school tradition of Roxy Music/Japan etc have no relationship to Pink Floyd/King Crimson era prog????

oh by the way I do think Genesis suck

You need to talk to Dave Q sometime. :-)

"knee-jerk" reaction indeed. i've always loved the RIO stuff, and firebreathing jap stuff that was influences by it- bondage fruit, ruins, ect. (zeni geva are still rubbish.)

anyone who defends yes still has to account for frodo, er jon anderson.

It does. And its name is Eno.

Never had this problem but then I did grow up in a hosue that contained both Pink Floyd and Clash albums. Only got round to checking out Yes in any detail a few years back after reading THE MUSIC’S ALL THAT MATTERS: A HISTORY OF PROGRESSIVE ROCK by Paul Stump. I think history has been unkind to them, Relayer in particular is interesting. More so than Genesis who despite a few good bits deserved a measure of ridicule.

To save this thread from yet another prog-is-actually-great-isn't-it?- am-i-being-ironic-i-can't-tell-anymore ILM discussion, can we talk about the latest Yes LP? They're still putting them out. The new one's called Magnification. Who's heard it?

Quote from one review:
Magnification uses an element that the band has not used since 1978's Tormato effort (on only one song), and the 1970 album Time and a Word before that (entire album): an orchestra. With the departure of keyboardist Igor Koroshev, the rest of the band felt it best to pursue this endeavor without an actual keyboardist, replacing that element with a full set of strings, reeds, brass, and percussion for the entire album.

Anyone heard this record? I loved "The Ladder" (1999) - a real return to form, but I've heard they've ùmoved away somewhat from the pop slant of that LP, which would be a shame if true. Moreover, rock band + orchestra has always tended towards the ponderous. Do Yes avoid this trap? Should I give the LP a try?

ewww the ladder was gross sounding

Yes is OK but I MUST PROTEST at this 'great lost album' status 'Relayer' seems to have accrued. Admit it, it's terrible. "Gates of Delirium" is their worst track ever, it's the same song as Rush's "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" except about 30 times as long. Plus the keyboard player sounds like he's Swiss or something.

dave q, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

grate lost alb = tormato as proven by mr q (î) earlier on ilm

mark s, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He sounds even more Swiss on that Brazilian solo album he did.

But in a good way.
