Def Leppard. Duran Duran. The J. Geils Band.

Pick your favorite early 80's cheese-rock anthem about pictures of hot chicks!

Girls On Film! The video is classic...

Siegbran Hetteson, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I must say I was disappointed by the Duran video when I finally saw it recently. I love "Centrefold" to death anyway.

Jeff W, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to think "Centrefold" was one of the best songs ever, when I heard it about every seven months. It's one of those songs that jumps out at you from nowhere, in supermarkets, on the radio, in a friend's CD collection. I finally D/Led it from WinMX about two months ago, listened to it twice, realised it was shit, and haven't listened to it against since.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Have to be Girls On Film. I have a friend who wrote her PhD thesis on a feminist deconstruction of the images in the video, trying to recconcile her rabid Duranniedom with her feminist beliefs.

Lyrically and image-wise, it's much more creepy and weird than the other choices you list. I mean, come on, Centrefold, how dumb is that? What's worse, the fact that this guy has lost his image of his teenage crush as a perfect girl, or the fact that he ADMITS to reading and wanking over bad porn mags to the entire world. Sad, pathetic git.

Girls On Film,no contest!!!

dek1, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Photograph. Obviously. Shame on all of you.

"OOOH...Look what you've done to this rocknroll clow-ow-own."

Brilliant.

GCannon, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn straight, GC.

"Photograph". I don't remember "Girls On Film" and few songs make me want to punch people and break shit like "Centrefold" does. The Irish have a lot to answer for.

Like I said I don't remember "Girls On Film" but I think "Photograph", like much of the Lep oeuvre, is a little weird and creepy in its own way. Am I getting something wrong or is he actually singing about how he once, owing to his rock star status, had a one-night stand with a supermodel and now all he can do is whack off to photos of her in magazine ads?

sundar subramanian, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

BTW, I don't care if J. Geils and his merry band of fuckers are from Ireland or not. If it wasn't for the Irish no one would play stupid- ass jig-rock like that. Great Big Sea aren't from Ireland either. Doesn't mean I'm going to start listening to them.

sundar subramanian, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I refuse to take sides on this issue, as all of them are obviously EQUALLY GRATE. Perhaps "cheese-rock anthem about pictures of hot chicks" = perfect subgenre?

"I'll Wait" by Van Halen belongs on this list. I LOVE that song.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ok, duh, Girls on Film.

Ally, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Learned how to play Photograph today. Amazing how much Armageddon It recycles.

five years pass...

They were playing “photograph” with a lot of bass at the bar last night and what gives this song it’s edge is the muted E5 in the verses. Mutt Lange strikes again

ITS

She's posing for consumer products now and then
For every camera she gives the best she can
I saw her on the cover of a magazine
Now, she's a big success, I want to meet her again

Are you for real
It's so hard to tell
From just a magazine
Yeah, you just smile and the picture sells
Look what that does to me

I see your face every time I dream
On every page, every magazine
So wild and free,
So far from me
You're all I want, my fantasy

earlnash, Saturday, 14 December 2019 22:40 (six years ago)

Chick at the bar who was singing out loud to this whipped her hair around and it hit me in the face. Classic or duddddd

calstars, Saturday, 14 December 2019 22:42 (six years ago)

Classic - you get her number.
Dud- you get a stye in your eye.

I’ll Wait vs Photograph ?

calstars, Saturday, 14 December 2019 23:08 (six years ago)

Photograph is secretly brilliant...it's about how guys couldn't get over the Marilyn mystique and the "mystery" of her life and death - "you're all wrapped up in a mystery". Guys for whom no other woman will measure up to someone who isn't quite real due to so much media hype and myth. One of my all-time faves.

Oh, look what you've done to this rock 'n' roll clown.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 14 December 2019 23:56 (six years ago)

"Turning Japanese" is another pin-up song of the (more or less) era.

Too Late For Love

brimstead, Sunday, 15 December 2019 00:45 (six years ago)

Nothing gives me more pleasure than introducing my kids to “photograph”

calstars, Sunday, 15 December 2019 00:45 (six years ago)

oh nevermind it’s a “theme” thread

brimstead, Sunday, 15 December 2019 00:45 (six years ago)

Except maybe introducing them to “Armageddon it “

calstars, Sunday, 15 December 2019 00:48 (six years ago)

Photograph, Too Late For Love, Armageddon It = all testament to the greatness of Steve Clark (all these riffs are his)

(also one for the ‘bands who were never the same once a member dies/leaves’ thread)
