Help! I've been looking for the name of a song for over ten years now. If anyone can help me, I'll give them $100!

Here's all I know about it. It was on an easy-listening station back in 1992. I'm pretty sure a guy sang it. It had a sort of French sound to it, in that there was a sort of accordian carrying the melody. I don't think there were any drums, but maye some cymbals. It had a sort of light-hearted sound to it. I can hum the melody tune, but I guess I can't really type what that sounds like. Because it was on an easy-listening station, it could have been from the 80's, or even some other decade. It was played on KOST 103.5 in Los Angeles. It was played in rotation with songs like, Red Red Wine, The Glory of Love, etc.

If anyone can help me, I'll give them $100, no joke! Ten years is way too long to be searching! And if anyone doesn't know the name, does anyone know where I could go to find the answer? Is there some sort of, music guru source that handles these sorts of things?

Thanks!

Do you have a lyric? Any words at all?

Mark, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, sorry, I can't remember any of the lyrics... but I can make a midi of the melody for you if that would help. If you have AOL, or AOL Instant Messenger, please message me... my screen name is Reyngel. I'm on all the time.

Ben, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shot in the dark: Where Do You Go To My Lovely by Peter Sarstedt. It's from the late 60's.

mms, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi... I listened to that song, but it's not it. :( But I made a wav of the melody via an online piano program, so if anyone wants...

go to:

www.reyngel.com/mystery.wav

so there in like, five minutes... wait while I upload it. Then take a listen, and see if you can help me that way.

Thanks so much!

Ben Leong, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's Splodgenessabounds - Two Pints Of Lager and a Packet of Crisps.

Stick the money in the post. Thanks.

Dr. C, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

lol, sorry... that wasn't the song either. ;) But it sure is amusing!

Ben Leong, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seriously though, I really send you $100 if you can find the name of the song for me. No joke. I'll do it through Pay Pal, or however you like.

Ben Leong, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This certainly is fun, but I couldn't place it from this melody. We'll get it, though.

Mark, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let's see if I can describe the song a little more...

see, all I can remember is the melody of the music. It's very repetitive... like, the wav i made, it repeats a lot... imagine that piano to be an accordian, or something like an accordian, and you can see how it kinda sounds french. i think it was a happy-sounding song, probably a love song of sorts due to the station it was on back in 1992. um... yeah, there was probably a mild tamborine or something in the background, but i can't remember. i'll keep thinking about it...

tell all your friends! $100! :)

Ben Leong, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ben - where did you hear it? Is this something that would only be on the radio in the UK?

Mark, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't know if it would be in the u.k.... but i heard it in los angeles, in 1992, on KOST 103.5, i believe. it's sort of an easy listening station... like, you dedicate songs to people, etc.

Ben Leong, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Possible They Might be Giants?

June Hobbs, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe, but which song?

Ben Leong, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh ... 'She Wants A Shoehorn (The Kind With Teeth', perhaps?/. From the Lincoln album.

June Hobbs, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'll check it out...

Ben Leong, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nope, not it... the song i'm looking for sounds a little more, serious, like, it's not really in a "joke" type of mood... at least, i don't think it is.

Ben Leong, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It really sounds like Ivor Cutler's 'What Happens To Sharks When They're Old?'. Swap an accordian quite happily with a harmonium?? www.ivorcutler.org/sessions.html

Franc, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That should be Cutler's 'Sharks'.

Franc, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hmm, i can't seem to find that song to listen to....

Ben Leong, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

okay, i listend to it... and it's not it.

it's a little more, radio-friendly, as in, it's more, "produced" rather than demo-sounding. and it's not really, kiddy-sounding... just kinda, a happy sounding love song, thing. as for the sound of the instrument, i'm maybe, 90% sure it was an accordian, or mock accordian.

Ben Leong, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dokey. If it's not that and it's not 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes' (it does sound like that melody), I don't know ...

Franc, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i have to get some sleep, but i'll check back to see if there are any other responses... spread the word though! i'll pay the person who can save me from this ten year mystery, hehe. thanks for the help thus far...

Ben Leong, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Blimey, if this ILM "cash for questions" thing takes off, I'll revive my own "HELP! I've been looking for the name of this song for TWENTY YEARS!" thread.

Jeff W, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did somebody say cash for questions?

Neil Hamilton, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'How Bizarre' by OMC.That's early 90's[I think]with accordian

Paul R, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if it's "how bizarre", and you got it before i managed to get home and listen to the .wav, i'll scream. :)

sean, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think song you're looking for is "I Wanna Fuck You In The Ass" by The Outhere Brothers.

Dan Perry, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm back... nope, it's not how bizarre, and i won't even check to see if it's the "i wanna f*** you in the ass" song...

the wav i made, that's really close to the exact melody notes, and can't be far from what the actual song's notes are.

i heard the song in 92, but again, it may have been created in the 80's. it didn't have like, big 80's drums, but it also didn't sound all, 90's experimental. it was kinda a stand alone song... i don't think there was acoustic guitar, or really any other instruments... maybe a horn or something, but maybe not. but the music definitely sounded kinda french...

w. green, Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Trust me the search will be better than knowing.

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember having the same problem once with a song I heard on the movie "Frantic". It had some accordion and sounded french but it was in english. Anyway my song was "Libertango" by Grace Jones (woman, I know). Maybe its yours too.

daavid, Friday, 21 November 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
here's a midi version of the song from the guy's website.
please, someone identify this song. it's drivin' me nuts, and I'm not sure if i've ever even here this song before!

Milkman (King Kobra), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

No idea I'm afraid. If it makes you feel better, it took me (in all) 25 years to identify:

White Plains: When you are a king
Greyhound: Black and White

That I had on a couple of singles when I was a kid that someone gave me. I only got the last one a month or two ago when it got played on Radio 6.

Keith Watson (kmw), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

That Greyhound one's easy. And the white plains one, which is verra weird...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 11 June 2004 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the lyrics...

Parting in your hair, it's hardly ever there
Wash your face
Shabby in your dress, always look a mess
Don't you care?
Mummy's there to see you always look your best
Change your dirty vest

When you grow to be a king
Never do a thing
Four and twenty blackbirds sing along
Royal gifts they all will bring
When you are a king
Everywhere you go, people bowing low
Carriages to take you anywhere
Feet won't ever touch a thing
When you are a king

Tore your shirt again, fighting in the rain
With whats-his-name
Shoe-black on your face, you're really a disgrace
Mummy smiles and all the while
Because she loves you
She will worry so
And if you're good you know

That when you grow to be a king
Never do a thing
Four and twenty blackbirds sing along
Royal gifts they all will bring
When you are a king
Everywhere you go, people bowing low
Carriages to take you anywhere
Feet won't ever touch a thing
When you are a king

When you are a king
Never do a thing
Four and twenty blackbirds sing along
Royal gifts they all will bring
When you are a king.
Everywhere you go, people bowing low
Carriages to take you anywhere
Feet won't ever touch a thing
When you are a king

What's that all about then?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 11 June 2004 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

It's easy if you've any idea of the name of the band or anyhing other than the words Black or White! I did try!

I even had the song on one of these "top of the pops" records before I knew who it was, by about 2 years!

Keith Watson (kmw), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
