Bizarrely unused samples

It just struck me that no record I know of has ever sampled the 'ehh-uhrr!' sound from Family Fortunes...

Mr Swygart, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I always said that my first hip-hop song would sample TB Sheets by Van Morrison. That guitar riff would be perfect.

Yancey, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

has anyone sampled EMF's "Unbelievable"? I think that the music behind the part where the lyrics go: "the things you say / your purple prose just gives you away" sounds like a great sample.

Manny Parsons, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wanna hear a disco-house/party funk track that appropriates the opening guitar riff from "Smells Like Teen Spirit". And a Dirty South hip-hop track that samples the guitar intro from "Blank Generation".

Nate Patrin, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the Smells Like Teen Spirit riff has been sampled already at least once...

michael, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

By? ("Intro-Introspection" probably shouldn't count.)

Nate Patrin, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(even if it rules)

Nate Patrin, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The "Teen Spirit" riff was on "18 Strings" by Tinman(?).

I'm surprised there hasn't been more sampling of TV themes (I can only think of NZ examples). It just sounds to me like something Puffy would do (but if he ever does, I take no responsibility).

B-Rad, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Camron sampled Magnum PI in one of his tracks. Can't remember the name though.

Manny Parsons, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never heard anyone take samples from the "Wondrous Boat Ride" section of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, but that would be cool.

ejad, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i sampled "doomette" by the swell maps. and combined a dif juz bassline with the beat from black oak arkansas' "hot and nasty."

your null fame, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry to bring the terrible memories back, but does anyone remember UK hip-hopper Credit to the Nation's 'Call it What You Want' which sampled the intro to 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', but really badly. I believe the same song also sampled PE's 'Bring The Noise'.

He also did a collaboration with, god help us, Chumbawumba, I believ

chewshabadoo, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

re: 'Teen Spirit' riff, Credit to the Nation had a (UK) hit sampling it but i feel ashamed to know that

michael, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Blank Generation" is, in and of itself, a "sample" from another song (it's a semi-parody of Rod McKuen's "Beat Generation," which has the same lyrical, melodic, and rhythmic structure as Richard Hell's song).

Poet vs. Poet in a Bowery Beatnik Blood Fest!

J Blount, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like to hear dialogue from Russ Meyer films sampled by an act I like for once.

J Blount, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I downloaded that Tinmen song and I have the feeling it's not actually a legit sample from SLTS but a carefully constructed soundalike. And even if it was, it sort of defangs the whole funky chunka-chunka feel to it.

Nate Patrin, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wanna hear a Dean Martin sample. The Frank Sinatra sample in "Wooden Horse" by Craig Mack was great, and as Martin > Sinatra, surely that'd be better?

And what is it with the Nillson samples this year?

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like to hear dialogue from Russ Meyer films sampled by an act I like for once.
What's wrong with Roni Size?

Keith McD, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Van Halen, "Dirty Movies"

dave q, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Altho Credit to the Nation was clearly naff, i reckon that the collab with Chumbawamba (Enough is Enough) was pretty good. In fact, I have the Chumbawamba album with the woman giving birth on the front and its ok, altho I haven't listened to it for a while...

Interesting fact about 18 strings - the teen spirit sample wasn't cleared so when they wanted ot release on a major label they had to record the guitar part themselves

Robin, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

For weeks, I've been wondering why the line "And that girl's hand was steadily moving up my thigh" from DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince's "Parents Just Don't Understand" hasn't been sampled fifty million times.

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The part from "Gett Off" where Prince says "Let me tell you baby I'm a talented boy." I will use it someday.

Nick A., Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Perennial answer - ROCK ON by DAVID ESSEX!!!

Tom, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Rock On' has been sampled at least once...

michael, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd love to hear Timbaland produce (yet another) cover of "Rock On".

J Blount, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As for that Wondrous Boat Ride thing, Marilyn Manson performs a rendition of it - as opposed to sampling it - for his opening to his PORTRAIT OF AN AMERICAN FAMILY album. But he DOES sample a saying about "communist daycare centre"s.

Lek Dukagjin, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(Slight hijack: michael, while yr here - did you get my e-mail?)

david h, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Re: "The part from "Gett Off" where Prince says "Let me tell you baby I'm a talented boy." I will use it someday." DJ Dexter from The Avalanches scratches this sample repeatedly on a DMC World Championship from 98 or 99. You can download it from The Avalanches website.

Has anyone used the start of Black Sabbath's "Hand of Doom"? If not, they should. No, hang on, they shouldn't. I should.

solomon abe, Wednesday, 3 May 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

i finally heard "you know, you know" sampled from the inner mounting flame by mahavishnu orchestra. on a rap track. i thought parts of that album would be prime for a sick ghostface cut, and was fin'n (fantasyin') to use it myself someday

mono tony, Wednesday, 3 May 2006 16:17 (twenty years ago)

actually "you know you know" has been sampled for David Sylvian's "I Surrender", off his 1999 'Dead Bees on a Cake' album - the sample serving as foundation for the basic rhythm track.

..and it sounds cool!

Max Blazevic (kitaj), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone sampled the bass and the horn part from the beginning of Art Ensemble of Chicago's "Theme de yoyo"? That'd make a killer old school rap tune.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 17:05 (twenty years ago)

has that "they're dead...they're all mixed-up" line from Night Of The Living dead ever been sampled?

hank (hank s), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 18:36 (twenty years ago)

For some reason I have been convinced for years that Bill Cosby barking "I mean you MOVE when I say MOVE!" from one or another of his "parents beating kids" routines will one of these days show up in some faceless DJ mix, like the kind they sometimes play in the kitchen at work.

Also, Arnold Schwarzenegger ordering the listener to "Get your ass to Mars!" from Total Recall. I used this on my CD but I don't think that counts.

Tons of stuff, really.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 4 May 2006 02:28 (twenty years ago)

the intro to "She Bop"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 4 May 2006 03:44 (twenty years ago)

Has Can ever been sampled?

I.M. (I.M.), Thursday, 4 May 2006 04:20 (twenty years ago)

"This is Radio Clash"...I mean, it is perfect and to my knowledge has NOT been used yet. Any part of it can be used...the intro, the melody, the backing part, the transition-y part...the first 20 seconds used to be my ringtone, actually. So it's already gone through the hip-hip rite of passage: ringtonedom.

Some hip-hop producer needs to read this thread.

musically (musically), Thursday, 4 May 2006 05:00 (twenty years ago)

The opening to Talking Heads' "Seen and Not Seen". The only sample I know of from Remain In Light lifted the 'Once In A Lifetime' chorus whole.

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 4 May 2006 05:05 (twenty years ago)

"seen and not seen" seconded, i've always thought that one would be huge. also the first 4 bars of "observatory cresent" by beefheart. the start of "head" by prince should be sampled by daft punk.

zappi (joni), Thursday, 4 May 2006 07:00 (twenty years ago)

"Has Can ever been sampled?"

At least once - Kowalski by Primal Scream uses Halleluwah.

Has anyone ever used the outro to Singapore by Tom Waits?

bham (bham), Thursday, 4 May 2006 07:42 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to hear the intro music to Disney's Jungle Book (the one with the slow clarinet at it's centre) being used on a hiphop track.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 4 May 2006 08:18 (twenty years ago)

a couple rap groups have sampled 'vitamin c', including pete nice & daddy rich post-3rd bass ('dust to dust' w/ dope ice cube hook) & kurupt just last year on 'stalkin' (produced by sir jinx!)

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Thursday, 4 May 2006 11:14 (twenty years ago)

both of those are heavily recommended btw!

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Thursday, 4 May 2006 11:18 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone ever sampled the drum introduction to 'Groovin with Mr Bloe'?

Ant, Thursday, 4 May 2006 11:50 (twenty years ago)

That bit in "Sweet Talkin Woman" by ELO where everything drops out for half a second except the vocal and a big ass bass drum is begging to have some French filter effects done to it.

talking heads once in a lifetime sampled on Jay Z feat. Memphis Bleek "It's Alright."

The driving school level on Parappa The Rapper samples "Turtles Have Short Legs".

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 1 June 2006 22:12 (twenty years ago)

Drum intro to Bowie's "Five Years" (which, by the way, is one of the earliest occurences of the kick-hat-snare-hat-DROP-kick-snare-hat beat).
