PLEASE HELP! I've* been looking for the name of a song for TEN YEARS! ** part II (The Dexys vs Orlando years)

* Well, not actually myself, an associate.

** And it's only been about 3 months.

So this is the story, Boy sat in club. DJ playing 'ironic' 80s chart songs and nu-metal. When *kaboom*, magical song comes over the speakers. Sounds very like Dexys: brass, vocal duet thing going on with Kevlike singer and souly woman, masses of instruments swirling around and then falling down a flight of stairs, possibly says the line 'Don't stand me down' in it (no, isn't on that Dexys album).

Aforementioned associate's trail of thoughts: "ooh, this is actually really good, is this dexys? sounds a bit like fpa (memory of orlando review mentioning furthest point away being influenced by don't stand me down) oh, it must be dexys, that sounds like don't stand me down, etc etc etc. ends".

And in his words: "basically it's furthest point away produced by phil spector, with a even godlier chorus and incredible verses"

Appetite suitably whetted I proceeded to hunt out all the rare Dexys songs, in the hope that it'd be one of them. So, it's NOT 'theme from Brush Strokes', Dance stance', 'Soul finger', 'Because of you' or 'Breaking down the walls of heartache' (this last song is MAJESTIC though). And now I ask you. One of you must know what it is, please tell. And if you don't, I'll spend my remaining days trying to recreate this song from memory (by proxy).

It's not The Bluetones, is it?

God I hope not.

Or someone like Deacon Blue? Just the male/female vocal and the brass thing in the late 80's made me think of them.

Heaven-17 - "Temptation" ??
are you SURE it's not "Boxerbeat" by jo-boxers?

john-paul, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's definitely not 'Temptation', I'll check these others out though and show to Boy. And even if its not the song in question, if they sound anything like "furthest point away produced by phil spector, with a even godlier chorus and incredible verses" then I'll be beyond happy.

Hmmm.... maybe late Rip Rig And Panic? Circa 1982-83 or so?

Sounds suspiciously like Bum Gravy to me.

The only similar thing I can think of with male/female vocals is You Little Thief by Feargal Sharkey.

fuck, i hope it wasn't the bluetones either. in context they wouldn't really have fitted, though it was a similar bleh-level. i'm resigned to losing it forever. oh well.

clarification: context was bleh-level, roaringly mediocre pub/club in Cardiff.
