BLUEPRINT 2

i just downloaded Blueprint 2 from WinmX... it has 15 songs that aren't from any Jiggas' album, but I doubt that it's a new material... I hear that they sell Blueprint 2 on the streets, but it's actually a collection of Jay-Zs unpublished material... andybody know anything about that? I'm talking about songs like "Marcyville", "People's Court", "Show You", "Boss Hova"...

jae ez, Monday, 4 November 2002 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

this is the thread for talking about the blueprint 2. so do that here.

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm all kinds of disappointed that this isn't about a Fugazi remake, a la Metallica's "Unforgiven 2".

Anthony Miccio, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Or Fugazi's own "Burning Too". Hey that gives me an idea!

Anthony Miccio, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Blueprint 2 is fucking terrible. AWFUL. I'm in the midst of selling it right now.

Yancey (ystrickler), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

:(

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

There's maybe 6 or 7 good-to-decent tracks on here. The rest are throwaways. This is after one listening mind you, but there isn't a lot of life or innovation here.

Yancey (ystrickler), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah jess first time through doesn't look so good. there's some really hot shit on here (there's a DISCO JOINT!) but also uh er. we're gonna see what happens here and probably burn down a single disc and see if that's more pleasing.

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

well, i'm broke anyway, and there is NO WAY i'm sitting around to download a rap double album in 2002.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

"Some People Hate" is very nice.

Yancey (ystrickler), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

hey yancey what do you think of 'a dream'?

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

What's the relationship between this record and The Blueprint? Is it really a sequal or it is a whole new story like Meatballs 2?

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

It sounds like bad U2 (not that there's a good kind).

Yancey (ystrickler), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

i knew this was going to be a dissapointment after i had a dream about a jay-z movie and all the seats in the cinema were facing sideways so you couldn't see the screen.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Mark. More like Major League 2 where Wesley Snipes has been replaced by Generic Black Actor (Omar Epps?) but Corbin Bernson and Charlie Sheen return.

Yancey (ystrickler), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

yancey you do realize that yr analogy makes jay-z corbin bernson or charlie sheen.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Having bought both Blueprint 2 and Under Construction this morning (along with a Merle Travis compilation, man did I get a strange look from the clerk), the intense mediocrity of BP2 has made UC sound so much better than it did last week when I bummed it from a friend. So there's that, at least.

Yancey (ystrickler), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm pretty unhappy with UC too! :(

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah jess buy bp2, it makes my missy sound better too

I think there are more good tracks than yancey sez, but they're not really new or anything. (this should not be surprising.)

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes I do realize this and it works. Jay-Z and Charlie Sheen mirror each other. Let's start with Charlie's best string of flicks, which begins with Wall Street, where he plays a young stockbroker hungry for $$$, success, pussy. So he's driven and conquers all while breaking some rules. Contrast this with Jay-Z's glamorizing of the hustle on Reasonable Doubt. Next in Young Guns we see Charlie as part of a young, raucous posse whose swagger is undeniably attractive, no matter how gross their crimes. He's worked his way to the top (albeit outside of traditional social mores), and he's working it for all he can. Jay-Z's sophomore release, In My Lifetime, shows him sipping Cristal, but there's some paranoia. He knows that he's stepped on some toes to get where he is, so while he's enjoying his fame and wealth, he's keeping his good hand close to his side. And it just continues from there: the melancholy Eight Men Out vs. the subdued Hard Knock Life, and on and on up to Major League 2 and Blueprint 2. This has been PROVEN BY SCIENCE!

Yancey (ystrickler), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Seriously, has Jay said anything about calling this Blueprint 2? This seems very strange to me. He's an intelligent, media-savvy guy who's basically on top of the rap world right now, and by calling his new record "Blueprint 2" he really seems short on new ideas. I just don't understand that decision at all. Also, as any first year architect student can tell you, there should only be one blueprint. Any more than that and you're asking for trouble.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

From what I've read, it's just name only.

Yancey (ystrickler), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

There's something endearing about it, really, instead of "taking it to the next level," Jay is telling the world "My present level is quite comfortable, I think I'll relax here for a while."

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

It's interesting to think of condensing the tracks into a single album, or finding a preferrable tone like choosing between the radio sounding bling-production or the chipmunk soul tracks or perhaps the more somber ones like "A Dream" and "Meet the Parents". I sort of like the idea of a slightly paranoid Jay-Z no longer so comfy, lashing out more. I like the Dre track and some of the darker tracks on the album which feel fresh after the royalty feel of the first Blueprint, like a Mafia flick where the sovereignty of the don begins to falter. Also the disco track is nice but it wouldn't fit on the perceived album i am cookie cutting out of the 2 discs.

Honda (Honda), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, the disco track is certainly on mine. maybe as the closer.

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

it is great how Beans alludes to Khia on there

Honda (Honda), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

i want a whole bunch of personalized 1 disc bp2 playlists by morning

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

hiphop disco traks are so 2000/2001 irv gotti!!

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

it's called Blueprint 2: The Gift and The Curse i believe

boxcubed (boxcubed), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, after the first two tracks on The Gift (Disc 1), it's smooth sailing. Haven't gotten to The Curse yet, though - I might need to bite down on something when the Lenny Kravitz track comes on. Please note that I'm developing a soft spot for folks with big egos flirting with disaster and succeeding in spite of such hubris, so my opinion might be slanted this way or that.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 04:17 (twenty-three years ago)

What track is this DISCO JOINT?

original bgm, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 05:03 (twenty-three years ago)

'as one'

Josh (Josh), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 05:11 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks

original bgm, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 05:21 (twenty-three years ago)

no prob

boxcubed (boxcubed), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 05:25 (twenty-three years ago)

So the Blueprint 2 is sounding much better to me today than yesterday. Not sure if it's that I'm in a good mood or what. Also: "The Watcher 2" should have been the new Bond song.

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

so did you sell it back or save a copy or what?

hey yancey how bout that mop joint eh?

Josh (Josh), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I put it on yesterday on the bus and fell asleep after 3 tracks. But I liked it up to that and my sleep was very pleasant!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 22 November 2002 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I've only listened to the first disc, but I can't believe people are sore about this album! I mean, "What They Gonna Do"! "All Around The World"! "Poppin' Tags"! "Fuck All Nite"! Actually before The Blueprint I don't know if he'd ever had that many fantastic songs in a row on an album. And even the Frank Sinatra rip is kinda cool (mostly for the way the groove absolutely demolishes Frank, like "hey, let's bump this old shit!").

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 22 November 2002 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, I was a little underwhelmed at first, but I can't get "What They Gonna Do" out of my head, "'02 B&C" is growing on me, "All Around The World" is when I do my dance, and "Some People Hate" is killer, and there's a lot i'm forgetting.

is it just me or are the Neptunes tracks the worst shit they've ever done? they all sound so cheesy and 80's and not in the good way. "Fuck All Nite" is the only one that i think has the potential to grow on me, and that's still not anywhere near my favorites.

"Blueprint 2" is a decent dis track but totally disqualified for the Austin Powers shit. blehhhhh
