...when I am ashamed of having Field Mice records because I feel they are too mainstream?

Indieholic Anonymous, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone tell me everything is going to be alright.

Indieholic Anonymous, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not as ashamed as this guy would be...

Medical science cannot begin to determine whther your case is hopeless as we have never seen such advanced sympthoms of microgenreitis. (or yes you have)

Winkelmann, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Six years ago I used the sentence "Cul De Sac? They're mainstream" in conversation. And I've made a near-complete recovery! It can happen to you!!

Tom, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Cul De Sac? They're mainstream"

Oh Tom, how could you?

(Deja.news will be the death of us all!)

Tim, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No no this was in an actual conversation! My contention was that anyone on the front cover of a magazine you could buy in WH Smiths had to be mainstream. (I actually still think this is pretty sound).

Tom, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

AMA comes back to haunt Tim! BOO!

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Was that the last great extended thread from The Usual Suspects on a.m.a.? And how come I didn't respond properly to Tim's cry of outrage?

(...should I make him mad by noting that they've played LA once and will be playing here again later this year...)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cul De Sac mainstream -- the funniest thing i've heard today (though I understand the gist of your argument, tom -- unfortunately, you can't make the horse drink the water if it doesnt want to so Thirsty Ear couldnt make it mainstream will all the advertising in the world -- hence the droppage of the Sac).

as for the field mice, always struck me as bit too bland and precious -- but certainly out of time soundwise, stirring a pot that had already been tipped over and abandoned.

you know you have gone too far, if you judge a record purely by who put it out or by how many people like it instead of judging the music itself separate from what peers and society tells you how you should respond to it.

Jack Cole, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In 1996 cul de sac achieved a top 50 place on the Melody Maker writers end of year albums poll.

DJ Martian, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

really? i assume 96 is when they put out the Fahey album. I don't think Sac without Fahey has ever achieved that. then again, i dont remember the Fahey album being rated so high in big music mags in the states.

Jack Cole, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, it was actually China Gate, without Fahey. Yes, I have these obscure bits of knowledge.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no, that makes sense too, as i stretch my brain cells back to the beginning of Cul De Sac buzz that quicky evaporated after the Fahey disc. Thirsty Ear always seemed like such a generic label to me, though they have put some good stuff out. Maybe "without identity" would be a better term than "generic."

Jack Cole, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Was that the last great extended thread from The Usual Suspects on a.m.a.?

No, I don't think so. It was probably this thread.

And how come I didn't respond properly to Tim's cry of outrage?

You did, only you started a different thread.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

IA, How may Superchunk records do you own???

brg30, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh dear, Dan -- you dredged up the unfortunate N**k C**e incident between me and Nicole, or at least some evidence of it. I wonder if she ever forgave her friend?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't own any Superchunk albums.

Indieholic Anonymous, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

owning records? that's so mainstream! :)

jel --, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"AMA comes back to haunt Tim! BOO!"

Yes this was exactly my point Dan. Now please don't do it again ;-) (of course I still like The Chameleons, but my reaction probably wouldn't be so fierce now).

Tim, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah records are always cool. what does superchunk have to do with being an indieholic? most indie kids I see don't seem to know who they are or don't listen to 'em.
