"Jaded" by Aerosmith - did Steven Tyler suddenly go indie?

When this single busted out on to the scene (a year ago or more?) I totally though it was indie/emo inspired (by indie emo i mean those middle of the road bands that dig ritesofspring AND pavement - mostly second wave teens) anyways, that dissonant guitar line with almost no effects and the held back "2/and of 4" feel reminded me so much of seeing teenage emo bands at scout halls and all ages spaces when i was in high school. this was also convieniently at the time when it looked as if "emo" (excuse me purists, but you know what i'm talking about) was about to be the next grunge. was i the only one with such thoughts?

That song was about as indie as Britney Spears is rock n roll.

Indieholic Anonymous, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The interplay between the guitar and drums in the verse reminded me of a Siouxsie and the Banshees b-side.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It reminded me of Aerosmith (i.e. no new ideas since 1975) trying to cash in on that hot new band, Smashing Pumpkins. Very cutting edge.

Dave225, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i agree with ddd - I thought the same thing.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It seems to me they're going for a 60s thing, right down to the psychedelic phrasing, and "Ticket to Ride" drum rip. Actually, I think Aerosmith are huge Beatle fans.

dleone, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Was it the cover of "Come Together" that gave it away?

hstencil, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If "Jaded" ain't a Jimmy Page rip-off, I'll eat my (non-existant) hat. Not that Page rip-offs are necessarily a bad thing, however.

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did you know the first song Aerosmith ever recorded was a cover of "I'm Down"? Oddly enough, they had to buy the sheet music.

dleone, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I couldn't agree more with ddd and tracer. I remember hearing this on the radio and a a little while later hearing what I thought was the new Dave Matthews single, which turned out to be "Yellow" by Coldplay. I called up my friend then and there to tell him about the "pavementization" of top 40 radio.

To be fair, the chorus of "Jaded" is not very indie at all, though.

Rufus King, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, the chorus is totally classic aerosmith rock when compared to that 'artsy' verse section

ddd, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'I don't wanna miss a thing' was brilliant, i'm having trouble recalling jaded.

jel --, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"That song was about as indie as Britney Spears is rock n roll."

But Britney loves rock'n'roll! Don't you remember the song she covered? We all went to Crossroads, didn't we?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, the horrible Joan Jett cover was what I was thinking about. It was about as convincing as Milli Vanilli.

Indieholic Anonymous, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Britters only covered Joan Jett so she could pose all seductively on a Harley looking like she's just been raped or has some kind of fantasy about it...possibly

on an equally distasteful note, imagine if Aerosmith had ever got that Chemical Brothers remix they (or their label) were hankering for back in '98...just WHAT would that have sounded like...?!?!?!

seven years pass...

Now that he's left Aerosmith, Mr. Tyler will be free to pursue all of his musical dreams.

shit a mighty wind for me (kingkongvsgodzilla), Monday, 9 November 2009 16:45 (sixteen years ago)

has he ever done ANYTHING outside of Aerosmith? He doesn't have a solo album does he?

tylerw, Monday, 9 November 2009 17:17 (sixteen years ago)

he's done a lot of guest vocals for various albums and concerts, but even then he's usually singing an Aerosmith song and/or Joe Perry was there too

tylerw, Monday, 9 November 2009 17:49 (sixteen years ago)

Here's a thought: couldn't we just fold the remainder of Aerosmith into the Stones?

mottdeterre, Monday, 9 November 2009 17:53 (sixteen years ago)

can we use this thread to list some indie rock songs that sound like "Jaded"? because if any actually exist i'd love to hear them.

lindsay goham (some dude), Monday, 9 November 2009 17:53 (sixteen years ago)

i hope the new arcade fire album sounds like "love in an elevator"

tylerw, Monday, 9 November 2009 18:05 (sixteen years ago)

was there ever one of those dumb 90s alt rock "draw the line: a alternative rock tribute to aerosmith" CDs with like marcy playground butchering "kings and queens"?

this has become very big news. they can't really replace him but even this last month you have a new Alice In Chains record.

Tyler joined Perry onstage Tuesday night at New York's Fillmore at the Irving Plaza, according to numerous on-scene reports. Rolling Stone writes that Tyler told fans, “I just want New York to know, I am not leaving Aerosmith. Joe Perry, you are a man of many colors. But I ... am the rainbow!”

I mean, in what other profession can you quit your day job, insult your former colleagues, and then return the next day and, when asked why you quit, say "I am not quitting! You are a man of many colors. But I ... am the rainbow!”
