Whitebird Singing In The Life of Stripe

Listening to White Stripes, WHITE BLOOD CELLS - what's in the voice? A lot of Black Francis; a touch of Jagger. But more surprisingly... an element of McCARTNEY! Something of the way Macca used to play & croon Acoustic Blues in the late (I'm talking LATE) 60s, and tried to Keep It Real... not my favourite aspect of Macca by a long way - but the WS do remind me of it.

So - do you buy it?

I'd download it.

Yes every review I've read has said this.

The singer sounds much more like Robert Plant to me.

If it's as good as "Every Night", I'd buy it.

Ronan: Oh! I don't read reviews.

has anyone heard their version of "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself"? that nailed down the coffin lid for me.

I always liked it when McCartney did that raspy thing on top of MOR wallpaper disco, kinda like Rod Stewart 'cept he was playing with the music and not playing with the audience? ("Arrow Through Me", "With a Little Luck", the unbelievably great "Coming Up" which is my fave Beatle-related product, though not because he sounds like Jack White)

On tracks like "I'm Finding It Harder to be a Gentleman" and "The Same Boy You've Always Known", the McCartney thing seems very obvious (now you mention it).

Jack White does have a very 'English' way of singing: rounded vowel sounds, very precise pronunciation (you can hear every word of the lyric to "Fell In Love With A Girl", despite the rapid fire delivery). His voice is similar to of any number of English singers - yes Plant, Stewart, a bit of Ray Davies in there perhaps?

Of more recent singers, he reminds me a lot of Gaz Coombes of Supergrass. Perhaps not coincidently, the singles from Supergrass's second LP were the last (new) "guitar rock" records I bought prior to White Blood Cells.

The only song I know is "Fell In Love With.." and on that he reminds me a lot of Pete Shelley.

I don't like the White Stripes except about 3 songs. The one which steals the lyrics from the song in Citizen Kane is absolutely brilliant. And Fell In Love With a Girl is great too. Other than that too much of the album is just stodgy blues rock dullness with no energy whatsoever.
