Kid-606: Classic or Dud?

Or, "I'm not down with Down With the Scene".

Seriously, I like this guy's quieter stuff OK, but I don't have any use for his crazy, noisy tracks (from what I've heard, including the much-praised Down With the Scene.)

Does his music do anything for you? How much of his current level of recognition (a Wire cover, etc.) is due to his talent for self-promotion?

The thing I can't stand about the Tigerbeat6 camp is their tendency to repackage horrid, inherently unlistenable stabs of digital tomfuckery as their own native, oh-so-mischievious brand of audio pranksterism. It's a tactic that's worn continually thin as their catalogue expands.

Kid is probably the guiltiest of all of them - in spite of his oft- stated anti-scenisms, I'm starting to interpret his actions as the work of somebody who's desperately afraid of being taken seriously. After all, once you subtract the glib song titles and the two minute beatfucks, his music isn't really any more 'fun' or 'personal' than your garden-variety IDM rekkid.

That said, I think that Soccer Girl and PS I Love You are among some of the best albs I own...

Mark, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also: it's not particularly hard to stand out as a personality in the IDM crowd; all Miguel had to do was say a few relatively insurgent things. I mean, really. That Marumari! What a CARD! And Jamie Lidell! Don't get me started!

As an aside, Mark, I'm pysched about The Books record now. Nice one.

Mark, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'd say classic. not necessarily because i love his music or anything, but simply due to his different approach to making music. the way he's made a name for himself alone makes him a classic.

dyson, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think that the new ep out on Violent Turd has its moments, especially when he focuses on the the oh-so-sampled Missy E. It makes for a cluttered and disturbing sound that isn't quite dancable, but entertaining none the less.

Brock K., Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ditto dyson's comments for KLASSYK STATUS. On top of all this his slower, prettier stuff is truly fantastic. The noise is not the best noise, but I can listen to it.

Keiko, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

classic...yet like any classic artist, he's had his less than wonderful moments and he's had plenty of downward nowhere. a lot of what he initially did with r&b (like the cube f'ed up mixes) are all amazing. he really defined glitch and took it to a very confrontational level that borefests like oval couldn't.

eh. m.

msp, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dud. very boring, very annoying, his music (even the 'pretty moments' ) is dictinctly average. "he really defined glitch and took it to a very confrontational level that borefests like oval couldn't. " - but didnt v/vm do all this oh so long ago? and after 3 'confrontational' - ie pop records being mashed up - records, i think the idea wears thin...

ambrose, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never read one word from the guy, which is probably why I think his last CD was absolute postmodern criminal genius.

maria, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

undecided about the guy himself, but tigerbeat6 = CLASSIC

jk, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yawn.

I think he has had 14 minutes and 27 seconds of his 15 minutes.

mt, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

About the Kid himself, I couldn't say. I only own PS I Love You, which I bought mostly for the title (and I don't love it, but, you know, it's okay if you're in the mood for that sort of thing.) The TB6 "And The Beat Goes On!" compilation, however is amazing. Beautiful/Clever/funny/whatever.

OCP, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eh... i like exactly two things by kid 606 - the gun court 7" (which is just straight alec empire jacking) and the "action packed mentalist" mix cd. the whole tigerbeat thing just seems like an annoying clique of rich kids trading wacky in-jokes without any concern as to quality of the actual, uh, music.

your null fame, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Search: the "Straight Outta Compton" 7" (one of the best remixes ever), PS I Love You

Destroy: most of the rest.

Tom, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ps i love you is pretty but I never want to listen to it

Josh, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud for calling himself 'Kid'. As is everyone else who describes themselves as such. It was a dud when Samuel R. Delany named everybody 'Kid' and it's a dud now.

dave q, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bogdan is better with being quite so annoying. i like soccer girl but as for a whole career's worth of music (you can imagine kid606 stationed as house producer for atlantic / warner once he's "made his name" (laying the groundwork he is with his annoying showoffery) i'd rather listen to prick decay.

bob snoom, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark pytlik is absolutely OTM with the 'afraid to be taken seriously' comment. Or maybe I just don't get the Tigerbeat6 brand of humour (cf. also Blectum From Blechdom, who I think are brilliant when they're not doing childish skits). Whatever, I love both "Down With The Scene" and "p.s. i love you", or bits of both anyway. The former was the first exposure I had to glitchy-type stuff, so I guess it was a kind of 'shock of the new' reaction I had to it. But there is a lot of beauty to be found within it once you get past the titles and the "craziness".

Re your last question: couldn't give a toss, to be honest.

Jeff W, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

as your null fame said: "the whole tigerbeat thing just seems like an annoying clique of rich kids trading wacky in-jokes without any concern as to quality of the actual, uh, music. "

i'm begining to think the same....but at least they're look like they're having fun up there...and on tigerbeat idm is pretty hit and miss in the quality control stakes as well...as for rich kids, you need to be to afford the equipment..what gets me is how gold chains and cex's new hiphop stuff - as good and enjoyable as it is - is interpreted as a revelation...these guys..oh so wacky!!!!

nik, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

rich kids? have you seen their parents' salaries to be sure?

jack cole, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Down With the Scene is one of the best albums I've heard from the last few years. The "Straight Outta Compton" remix is pretty good too. I haven't heard his other releases. He wasn't bad when I saw him last year. He did the deconstructed pop songs thing.

sundar subramanian, Saturday, 27 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What aspects of Down With... clicks with you, Sundar? I listened to it 2 or 3 times and sold it right back & I really can't remember a thing about it, except that I liked exactly one track, the one w/ Mike Patton. When I hear that people love it & really want to understand why, because I like so much music that could be considered similar but just couldn't get into this at all.

Mark, Saturday, 27 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
playing at slimelight next saturday. eh?!?! anyway, clashes with rephlex party

gareth (gareth), Friday, 13 September 2002 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

"blectum from blechdom, who i think are brilliant when they're not doing childish skits"

sigh

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 13 September 2002 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

The Kid is alot better at marketing himself than making music.

I wonder how many records were sold just for having a track called "Luke Vibert Can Kiss My Indie-Punk Whiteboy Ass".

I'm glad I borrowed "Down With the Scene" & "PS I Love You" off of a friend at work before buying it unheard on rep alone. I didn't hear anything near as interesting as his rep.

Cex is another one that I don't get, but I have heard he is pretty funny live, kind of like a glitch Weird Al or something.

On a similar tip, while I can't say that I am fan, I can understand why some people are freaky about Venetian Snares. That music is totally fucked up and pretty wild. It kind of hits me in a way like the first time I heard Godflesh or Napalm Death, it isn't my thing but it is impressive.

earlnash, Friday, 13 September 2002 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

the Rephlex party is next friday night /early saturday a.m., the evening before k606/Ryo-co/etc at Slimelight, so there won't be a clash...606 is playing at Fabric (!?) that friday night as well, which;ll be an interesting one

also- Blectum from blechdom r.i.p i think..

pete^f, Friday, 13 September 2002 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

all of this Fucking shit up-type stuff is a good joke. Really. You get a laugh out of it for abt five seconds but there isn't much beyond that. There are a lot of good singles here but not for 60-minute lenght albums as it gets tiring.
