scott pl., Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'B.O.B' - Outkast (of course) 'Adrenaline' - The Roots 'Men at Work' - Kool G Rap (and lots of breakbeat tunes)

Do songs with dn'b beats count? If so then tons, Roni Size, Saul Williams, etc.

Jordan, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

-Hijack, "Doomsday of Rap"
-De La Soul, "The Magic Number"
-Del the Funky Homosapien, "Catch All This"
-This might only sort of count, but Propellerheads feat. the Jungle Brothers' "You Want It Back".

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I imagine there would be loads of Jungle Bros tracks! Jordan I'm thinking of stuff that's SLOWER than d&b but FASTER than "All That Jazz" by Stetsasonic.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bone Thugs - "It's All Good"
INOJ - "Shorty Swing My Way"

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

although i'm not sure if by your question you are actually looking for doubletime songs. twista is good for alot of that stuff, but jay- z has two of the best - is that your bitch (the version taken off jay- z's 4th album, not memphis bleek's) and nigga what, nigga who, which might be my favorite timbaland song ever

bc, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cee-lo green - microhard

bc, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

house-tempo hip hop songs , bc - "that's what I'm lookin for". tho I think my favorite speed might be those tracks that fall JUST short of a house tempo. Redman seems to love these - "Tha Rockwilder", "Da Goodness", Sweet Dreams remix of "Get the Party Started"

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and "Ooh Ooh" by De La, which he appears on as well

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

er i think bc is right - stuff like "what's your fantasy" would technically be about 70bpm instead of 140bpm, so that makes them slow hiphop songs doesn't it?

"ooh ooh" though, what the hell? that's like 90bpm. and sluggish with it.

up tempo?, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

okay, i really don't care about bpm - i guess it's a convenient shorthand for those of us who immediately grok such things, but that's not me. "ooh ooh" is sluggish next to a house beat but it's fuckin STOMPIN next to a hip hop beat - i love that zone it inhabits, beholden to neither but drawing from both.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

aight, my definition of up-tempo hip hop is a lot different to "ooh ooh" though. maybe it's just how we choose to dance to shit. anyway i'm saying:

THE WRATH OF KANE

up tempo!, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe "ooh ooh" isn't actually as fast as i think it is? hmm - hip hop that FEELS fast but isn't, and vice versa. "Beep Me 911" for instance feels really slow and langourous but it actually clips right along. wrath of kane r000lz

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's the same with "What's Your Fantasy" - the speed depends on whether you follow the agonisingly slow kickdrums or the rapidfire snare-like electronic bleeps.

Tim, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

gravel pit by wu-tang clan

brains, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shouldn't that be "Rules" by Wu-Tang Clan?

Lil' Kim - "How Many Licks?" and "No Matter What They Say", plus obviously Missy Elliot's "4 My People".

Tim, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Timbaland has done a few in the last year or so, like Feel the Girl, Ugly, Scream and maybe I told y'all. The fastest hip hop I can think of is about half the tracks on Fear of a Black Planet (War 33 1/3, Burn Hollywood Burn) and stuff that it influenced (Paris - The Devil Made Me do it, Sir Jinxs productions for Ice Cube).

ed, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Almost forgot: Organized Konfusion, "Walk Into the Sun".

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and Ice-T's "Hit the Deck".

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Pubic Enemy" - Tribe Called Quest still holds up, always found it frenetic (for Tribe at least).

Rufus King, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And "Go Ahead In the Rain" from that same album, too.

Nate Patrin, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eve - "You Had Me, You Lost Me"
Timbaland & Magoo - "Drop"

Tracer Hand, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the last two Outkast tracks were quite nippy

'say no go', 'tread water' and 'mama gave birth to the soul children' by de la soul all clock in around 105-115bpm

would Tricky's cover of 'Black Steel' count?

Blackalicious ' Alphabet Aerobics' gets very uptempo towards the end - as is the point

Souls Of Mischief '93 Til Infinity' (as featured on Another Late Night with Zero 7)

Mos Def 'Miss Phat Booty'

, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Get It Together' - Beastie Boys (whatta tune btw!)

, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Walking Through The Darkness by Ghostface Killah
Follow The Light by Dungeon Family
PA Nigga by UGK
I Can't Wait by Ol' Dirty Bastard

Bobby D. Gray, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bob Zemko, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Twin Hype - "Do It to the Crowd"!!!

Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back"

Alexander (Alexander Buckiewicz-Smith), Monday, 27 February 2006 03:13 (twenty years ago)

MC HAMMER

mchammer.blogspot.com (blunt), Monday, 27 February 2006 03:31 (twenty years ago)

It would be more interesting (marginally) if people listed rap albums that don't have uptempo tracks.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 27 February 2006 03:34 (twenty years ago)

"stay fly"

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 February 2006 03:40 (twenty years ago)

(no one actually knows any rap albums, deej)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 February 2006 03:41 (twenty years ago)

Sort of dopey thread, yes. The weirdest thing to me is that nobody ever got to Will Smith, who made his whole career (the father-son tribute song aside) doing uptempo party hip-hop songs wherein he tries to co-opt the coolness of people he plays in the movies: "Wild Wild West," "Men In Black," "Nod Ya Head (Black Suits Comin')," etc... and then of course Gettin' Jiggy With It....the most downtempo thing he probably ever produced in this vein was probably "Miami"...

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Monday, 27 February 2006 05:51 (twenty years ago)

Memphis Bleek feat. Freeway - "Just Blaze, Bleek and Free"

Lukas (lukas), Monday, 27 February 2006 05:54 (twenty years ago)

the most downtempo thing he probably ever produced in this vein was probably "Miami"

How quickly we forget "Just the Two of Us"

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 27 February 2006 06:32 (twenty years ago)

who made his whole career (the father-son tribute song aside)

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Monday, 27 February 2006 08:21 (twenty years ago)

ah my bad.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 27 February 2006 08:43 (twenty years ago)

"Get Ur Freak On" is actually very, very slow. Unless you are playing a jungle set.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 27 February 2006 18:27 (twenty years ago)
