Black Flag's "Nothing Left Inside"

I've finally had enough, I hate this fucking place and I hate myself too and everything else I've ever done since I was unfortunately born. Everything sucks and everybody in the world deserves to die. The whole human race can fuck off - actually that goes for every living organism. Except for the insects and maggots that will feast on all your bodies once I blow everybody's fucking brains out.

Discuss either a) BF song mentioned, or b) songs you like to listen to when in a mood like the one described in question box!

"NLI" - sometimes it sounds contrived and incompetent to me, but there's an interesting tension between Ginn's condescension-to- audience and Hank's desperation-to-please-audience - it seems like halfway through he realises that he sounds like a 12-yr-old punk and starts really ripping that larynx, and though he STILL sounds very immature I can almost hear blood pouring out of his mouth from the nodes he's ripping, or whatever's in the throat there. Plus everyone knows that black coffee is the worst possible thing for the throat, his voice is going to go in a few years and I bet some of you are glad about that, I don't care one way or the other and yes I know someone is going to say "Would've been OK with Dez" etc but here's an example of Hank's eager-beaverness not grating overmuch. Ginn's solo is terrible but the tone is simultaneously thick AND buzzing - i.e. 'ugly' - to make up for it. Plus I like the way it starts with a fast drum intro for no reason, and also how it just....stops...dead...most slow stoner dirges end with feedback and drum rolls and shit but this...just...stops

Alt question 1 - why were DC3 and Gone so shit?

Alt. question for Ned R - the Brazen Hussies' "Shit My Pants" (the one you probably correctly described as 'pointless') was supposed to be the most blatant Greg Ginn rip-off ever, a total photocopy, did it work as such in your opinion?

dave did you ever send me a brazen hussies CD?

Gone were cool, man - if only 'cos they cld name recs things like 'Let's Get Real Real Gone For a Change' - and the lack of Rollins was a big bonus.

'Dirt' by Lou Reed is a gd slice of self-loathing.

it's not about himself tho, it's about his manager! so what it is is a good piece of WHINING.

I'd probably listen to The Seekers' Georgy Girl, because it cheers me up ;0)

GGFH once performed a cover version of that song for their Eclipse album.

*checks review* The exact words were "a self-consciously dumb classic rock instrumental that doesn't do much beyond being just that," which does I agree sound exactly what Greg Ginn was doing after a certain point!

Actually, Dave, you'll be amused to know that the AMG suggests similar artists to you include Richard Crenna, a sound effects record and a collection of children's verse.

well, i like black flag's "no values," the version on "everything went black" with johnny bob singing.

and in a similar vein, the electric eels' "you're full of shit" does the job in fine fashion (any song that contains the lines 'and all my ex-friends they oh so politely criticize me and advise me, they don't know what they're talking about, don't mean a thing a bunch of stupid assholes hanging on strings and you're full of shit and you know it's true' is instant classic anyways). actually, the whole "god says fuck you" album works.

A copule o' things spring to mind. Shellac's 'Prayer to God' really does it for me when I'm feeling angry, Mayhem 'Necrolust' for those burn all people times and dreary ol' Joy division for self-loathing...

I hate Black Flag with rollins. thick-necked asshole ruined a great band. That track's one of the exceptions though; it's a drill in the temple.
