Best thing about Tom Petty: the Black Eyed Peas promise to "Slice like a machete/ Break hearts like Tom Petty". Mellencamp is a Happy Shopper Springsteen. Push.

Byrds retreads vs. Stones retreads. I like the sidemen better than the lead.

At different points throughout both careers, each has been better than the other. For example, Uh-Huh was far superior to Long After Dark, but then Full Moon Fever stomped all over Big Daddy. In the 90's, neither was at the top of his game anymore, but the best albums from both seemed to come out at about the same time. Human Wheels and Wildflowers in the '93-'94 timespan, and then John Mellencamp and Echo at about the same time, too.

But Petty didn't giveaway a Pink House on MTV when they used to play mostly music videos

Tom Petty all the way. Full Moon Fever is a pretty damn good album for an MOR performer, plus he plays a Rickenbacker which is always plus points from me.

And he was in the Traveling Wilburys, which I had to listen endlessly as a child and enjoyed it compared to all the other crap my dad kept in his car.
There was once a college radio rep who was obsessed with comparing Mellencamp, Petty and Springsteen. That just popped into my head writing this.

"comparing Mellencamp, Petty and Springsteen" - Kuh-razy!

J Blount, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it was some stupid "contest" which Im sure went to a class 5 CMJ radio station MD they were trying to get an add for.

I think I remember TP gettin a bad rap on his C/D thread, but rec. I read an article which confirmed my disagreement w/haters. (Petty over Mllncmp by a mile, btw)

Hell, I'll even second the article's prop. that Petty > Springsteen.

one year passes...
Petty V. Mellencamp , No contest , Petty shits all over him !!! Petty is a class song writer , an excellent singer and uses great producers....

John Cougar Mellencamp loses nearly every TS thread ever, just because of that Chris Rock skit about white people "fuckin' they sister and listenin' to John Cougar Mellencamp" or whatever it was. If Chris Rock had used Tom Petty as his example, John Cougar Mellencamp would still lose.

Over the last ten years, Mellencamp trounces Petty on creative output, plus Petty is getting nasty and bitter and it's not informing his music in the best way. Petty is really in love with being a star, whereas Mellencamp likes telling stories. I love a lot of Petty's older stuff, but another record like The Last DJ might put him in Bob Seger territory.
