they're from the modern day, but I recommend LIARS... their influences summed up in the track 'Tumbling Walls Buried Me in the Debris with ESG'

stirmonster has nailed it, but add the pop group splinter bands, especially:

pigbag (e.g. "Sunny Day")
rip rig & panic (e.g. "You're My Kind Of Climate")

!!! (chikchikchik) are indeed funk, but funk for white boys who don't know anything about funk. i like em lots, but i'm not deluded enough to think that i'm like really into funk or anything now. yeah, i suck!

Big Boys. (Buy "The Fat Elvis") .. Hardcore/funk, not postpunk/funk. RIYL: Black Flag, Kool & the Gang.

one month passes...
Maximum Joy, Au Pairs, Konk, Way of the West, Medium Medium, Crispy Ambulance, Funkapolitan, Gods Gift, The Bloods, Pulsallama, Ilya Volkswagens, and Blue Rondo a la Turk!

Coming with a heavy PiL influence, the Fire Show (recent, now defunct) were REALLY great.

In the Gang of Four neighborhood, Go Go Go Airheart! is pretty cool, although when folks hate these guys they seem to hate them a lot.

I really like the Seconds' record from last year. They're kind of funky, but more spazzy/"angular."

Pylon. They never seem to get mentioned on these post-punk/disco not disco lists, but I used to hear their records played in NY dance clubs all the time in the early 80s. Vanessa Briscoe's an incredible singer.
