Any briliant stuff amongst those tasteful El Graphic sleeves or is it all an old man's folly?

The Joy Of Sing-Sing is stunning. Some of Captain Soul is alright, so is a bit of French Kicks and Beachbuggy and Slumber Party... further than that, I cannot possibly say.

Montgolfier Brothers' Pro-Celebrity Hanging Around is quite, quite lovely.

i tell you, you would not BELIEVE what happened the last time we had a poptones thread!

i like the montgolfier brothers a lot, as to the rest, erm, um, it is fine and worthy music, that just happens not to be to my taste although i quite clearly see its obvious merits, it is just not my cup of tea.

I went looking for any threads on the subject but didn't find them. There's quite a bit in those archives so pointing me in that direction would be appreciated.

In the thread OK lets do it properly: McGee, master or moron? search & destroy... at him people! Tom says that the other Poptones thread has been deleted. Why? There was a lot of rubbish in there but some interesting infos as well.

I really like Young Lawyer by the French Kicks- although not yet as much as One Time Bells. The first 40 seconds of the second track (Living Room is Empty) is my favorite bit at the moment, but the whole CD is pretty good.

Tom must have been joking. I never understood English humor... I found the thread. Google is our best friend: Poptones Goes Bust: Your Views Please - Here's My Considered Analysis

That was an ugly part of ILM's history, best left buried.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What about that Jim Kerr thing tho? That was brilliant.

RickyT, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

An entertaining but not very informative thread. Still some of the poptones stuff is turning up cheap enough that I may investigate on spec. The Mad Professor comp is really good and some of the Millenium reissues are good too. The GAry suher/beach boys one however is total rubbish.

Winkelmann, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

thats not actually the poptones thread, but another one. covers similar ground though, the original is better though, because you get to see it unfurl in all its bizarre glory, the one you linked to, the historys already there, so you don't see it grow!

Slumber Party, Slumber Party, Slumber Party.

The end.

Curt Boettcher/Millennium/Sandy Salisbury reissues = wonderful widescreen hippy dippy acid pop that is v. far out and groovy. If the Hives and all that other mung pays for it, well ok...

I enjoyed the way doomie got tom and mark s to buy recs from dull indie no marks but what a fucking DUD of a label. I've heard a few tracks and that was enough to be honest.

I wish the label had folded and mcgee had lost all his money. As far as ppl losing jobs, they can get other, better jobs. It nearly did but what saves him is that he has a conservative enough taste which means that he is likely to find ome thing that will sell.

I have adored almost everything Poptones has issued. El Vez I can do without, and some of the reissue stuff is a little dodgy. But oh! Slumberparty are adorable. Outrageous Cherry kick my butt. I could go on and on and I don't really give two hoots about Alan McGee personally but the label is truly fantastic.
