S/D the 'Volume' (UK) CD series

I bought a few of these (6, 8 & 9 I think) while in college. Don't know how popular these were in the UK but they were somewhat hard to come by in the states (well, Kansas at least). Well worth the effort though. My favorite track from those mentioned: the song by Curve, which I think was the 2nd track on 8 (don't have them with me). This series introduced me to at least 5 artists I subsequently bought albums from (Elastica, Mark Lanegan, Autechre etc). A few real duds mixed in, but again, don't have the CDs to look. I wonder where this series ended and which volume you consider best/worst?

The "Sharks Patrol These Waters" double CD, which was a "best of" of the comps, had some excellent moments, not least the Slowdive version of "Some Velvet Morning" among others

Got the first one when it came out and was a fairly regular buyer of them for a while -- I have six out of the first ten. But I wasn't able to keep up with them and all their attendant comps at the time -- grad school wages and import prices = death. Still have those old issues around, though -- made for a nice reflection of MM/NME then-obsessions combined with at least a few out of nowhere WTF? moments. Introduced me to No-Man but on the flip side accidentally put me off Pulp for a couple of years -- "She's Dead" was the song and has grown on me more with time, but I also have to admit that Jarvis just looked AWFUL in the accompanying photo shoot. Argh.

What was great was the broad combination of sounds, so you might hear the high llamas next to the sabres of paradise, and very often with "exclusive" tracks. Once they started doing the techno compilation series Trance Europe Express, then Volume itself became much more guitar/rock/indie focussed and for that reason alone was much less interesting.

I've just been reminiscing about Volume because this week I put my Volume tshirt (of a tropical fish obviously) in the pile to go to the charity shop as I'm moving, but its still there and clean if anyone wants it for a suitable donation to a good cause.

hey, could I have the volume t-shirt? I lost mine when my tent was stolen at glasto all those years ago.

Volume 8 is the very best volume. 8 through 10 is Volume's plateau of very bestness.
